Staff Report – Florida Catholic
Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice has launched its annual Christmas Appeal with a goal to raise $560,000 in December and January.
The Christmas Appeal is the largest fundraiser for Catholic Charities and is vital for operating the social service organization. Each donation will help real individuals and families who are assisted through any one of the 37 different programs available in more than 30 locations throughout the Diocese.
Bishop Frank J. Dewane noted that the support of Catholic Charities by the faithful of Southwest Florida is inspiring and critical to ensure “our brothers and sisters in Christ continue to receive the help and support they need. Catholic Charities does a wonderful job in providing programs that not only help in crisis but assist in improving daily the lives of those they reach.”
Bishop Dewane noted that Pope Francis tells us that we must find the image and likeness of Christ in others and lend support to those in need. “These brothers and sisters, our neighbors, need our help. The Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal is a great opportunity for everyone to make a difference. May God bless you for seeing those in need, loving them and for your continued generosity.”
When Mother Nature humbled us with the wrath of Hurricane Irma a few months ago, so many responded immediately with tremendous support and kindness, said Catholic Charities CEO Peter Routsis-Arroyo. “This Christmas season we cannot forget about the people of Southwest Florida that are still on the long road of recovery to rebuild their lives, especially those who do not have the resources to restore what they lost in the storm.”
Catholic Charities opened 12 disaster response centers in the aftermath of the hurricane and served hundreds of people daily at several locations. Many anonymous volunteers came out and lent a hand or collected and delivered food and water. Some of those sites may be closed now but the need to help people regain their self-sufficiency continues, Routsis-Arroyo added. “A donation to our annual Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal will afford us the ability to address the long-term impacts from Hurricane Irma.”
Your gift will not only enable Catholic Charities to respond to the destruction of the storm throughout our region but grow the services to ensure the homeless and poor receive effective programs that bring about real change in their lives. Any contribution would be greatly appreciated as there are many exciting things happening at Catholic Charities.
In addition to these highlights, the Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal provides funding for long-term solutions to survivors of Hurricane Irma, homeless families, struggling youth, isolated seniors, deserving veterans and ALL who are in need in Southwest Florida.
Catholic Charities helps all in need regardless of race, nationality or creed and regularly receives the top rating from Charity Navigator as a non-profit that does the most with its money. A total of 91 cents of every dollar donated will go directly to the needy.
