Bishop Dewane’s letter regarding the Mass of Thanksgiving for Pope Benedict XVI Print this post

Bishop Frank J. DewaneDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

As we journey through this Lenten Season, be assured of my prayers for you and your loved ones during this special time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving.

At this time please join me in prayer for Pope Benedict XVI, for his health and well-being, and in thanksgiving for his service to the Church. Throughout his pontificate, the Holy Father has been a loyal and active Shepherd. Through his teachings and writings he promoted an authentic personal relationship with Christ. His constant care for the sick, the poor, and seeking peace in the world have inspired us all.

Pope Benedict XVI’s resignation takes effect at 8:00 p.m. Roman time (2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time) on February 28th. Please also pray for the Cardinals who — with the guidance of the Holy Spirit — are preparing to convene in conclave to elect the next Successor of St. Peter. Let us unite in prayer with all Catholics around the world and offer our private prayers for Pope Benedict XVI, the Church, and the next Successor of Saint Peter.

On the evening of Wednesday, February 27th there will be a special Mass of Thanksgiving for Pope Benedict XVI at all Parishes within the Diocese of Venice. Please contact your Parish for respective Mass time. Allow me to encourage you and your family to participate at this Liturgy during this historic moment in the life of the Church.

While counting on your continued prayers and the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to you my sincere and profound gratitude.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

+ Frank J. Dewane

Bishop of the Diocese of

Venice in Florida
