Bishop Frank J. Dewane spent his Thanksgiving in what has been an annual tradition of celebrating Mass and then helping to serve a hot meal.

On a rainy morning at Our Lady of Angels Parish in Lakewood Ranch, the Bishop celebrated Mass before more than 400 using the words of Pope Francis to encourage the faithful to reflect on what they are thankful for and to pray for those who are suffering in the world as well as to do something about that suffering in any way they can.

From there, the Bishop turned from putting those own words into action by assisting at the annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Knights of Columbus #3358 Our Lady of Victory Council on Fruitville Road in Sarasota.

There the Bishop worked on the hot food serving line with the responsibility for the corn. The Bishop also said the opening prayer.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane helps dish out hot food for about 650 people during Thanksgiving at the Knights of Columbus 3358 Our Lady of Victory Council in Sarasota.

The Knights served approximately 650 meals with some delivered to area nursing homes. Many who came to the hall were the elderly, the working poor and young families. The meal was comprised of hot turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, a roll and pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top.

In addition to a full Thanksgiving meal, the Knights also offered coats to all the children who came. Much work goes into the meal with volunteers helping ahead of time and 40 or so delaying their own Thanksgiving celebration on the holiday itself by helping in the kitchen, dining hall and in the dishwashing room. This is the 32nd year for the dinner.
