Director of Development, Diocese of Venice in Florida

Summary

The Director of Development is responsible for developing, implementing and coordinating a broad range of fundraising initiatives for the diocese, including the annual Catholic Faith Appeal, while maintaining a primary focus on acquiring major gifts.  In addition, the Director will work with the parishes to encourage all Catholics to share in the mission of Jesus Christ by participating in Stewardship through the gifts of their Time, Talent and Treasure.

 Duties and Responsibilities

  • Major Gifts
    • Plan, coordinate and implement the individual major donor program to meet the diocese’s major gift fundraising goal and build the individual donor base
    • Identify, research, qualify and cultivate prospective donors
    • Manage a portfolio of qualified major gift prospects
    • Solicit and close large gifts on behalf of the diocese
  • Annual Diocesan Catholic Faith Appeal (CFA)
    • Work with the Bishop, Chancellor and other senior diocesan staff to develop priorities and objectives for fund raising initiatives
    • Plan and coordinate all aspects of the CFA to ensure the necessary resources and systems are in place to support a successful fundraising campaign
    • Oversee donor-appreciation events
  • Catholic Stewardship Education
    • Work closely with a diverse group of staff and volunteers throughout the diocese (diocesan offices, parishes, Catholic Schools, Catholic Charities, etc.) to develop and implement a strategic plan for philanthropy/stewardship education as well as increasing Planned Gifts, Grants and the parish Offertory
    • Ensure that diocesan-wide workshops, publications, etc. exemplify best practices of stewardship education
    • Provide communications and educational resources in culturally appropriate styles and languages
    • Participate in conferences, associations etc. specifically regarding development directors from other diocese and the National Stewardship Council, and development a network of useful contacts
  • Administrative Leadership
    • Supervise and provide work direction to assigned staff to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the Development Department
    • Maintain and revise the donor database and provide appropriate information to diocesan offices and parishes as requested
    • Develop and administer department budget with established procedures
    • Assure ethical conduct of staff
    • Prepare an annual report of all fundraising effort to Bishop and Chancellor, parishes, etc.

Qualifications

  • Experience
    • Minimum of 7 years of progressive development experience overseeing successful fundraising programs; three or more years in stewardship education preferred; experience setting and administering departmental and campaign budgets within a large, complex organization (preferably the Catholic Church) with work at the diocesan level. 
  • Education
    • BA in Marketing, Business Administration or Non Profit Administration or related field
  • Skills
    • Practicing Catholic who upholds the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church and possesses a sound working knowledge of the Catholic faith, hierarchy, especially related to stewardship and charitable giving
    • Advanced knowledge of forms and mechanisms of giving in the voluntary/charitable sector
    • Working knowledge of diocesan, deanery and parish structures and operations
    • Proven track record of soliciting and closing major or planned gifts; working knowledge of planned giving investments; ability to inspire confidence among donors; and keen understanding of fundraising
