Celebrating the people who have made a huge impact on the faith life of most students, grandparents were invited to St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples on Oct. 24 for a special celebration.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated Mass for the students and their grandparents, noting the importance of taking time out to honor and recognize grandparents – the foundation for building generations of faithful Catholics. The Bishop said it was good to see the support of the grandparents in the educational aspects, but most importantly in the spiritual aspects of the younger persons’ life. The celebration recognized the grandparents of the students at St. John Neumann Catholic High School whether they were present or not, living or deceased.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane greets one of many grandparents who attended the annual Grandparents Mass at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples on Oct. 24.

“You are all called to do the will of the Lord, whether you are a student or a grandparent,” Bishop Dewane said. “Sometimes we have trouble dealing with that… However, you have to get up and get ready for the coming of the Lord and act in the way you are called as men and women of God. How are you responding to this call? You have to respond by saying ‘Here I am Lord.’”

During the Mass, Bishop Dewane also recalled how Pope Francis often speaks fondly of grandparents and the role they continue to play in the lives of many around the world. Pope Francis calls grandparents a “treasure” for who they are and for their potential, not only in the family, but in how they continue to contribute to society.

The Bishop complimented the grandparents for being examples of a living faith to their children and grandchildren, while then encouraging the students to appreciate and listen to the grandparents they have and to pray for those grandparents who have gone before, remembering the example and legacy they left behind.

Sister Patricia Roche, FMA, Principal of St. John Neumann Catholic High School, said the students enjoy honoring their grandparents in what has become an annual tradition.

A luncheon in the Justin Holocek Student Life Center allowed the students and their grandparents to spend quality time and share a meal together. As entertainment, the St. John Neumann Jazz Band played music more familiar to the grandparents than to the students. Afterwards, some of the students gave their grandparents a tour of the school, showing where their lockers are, classrooms and other facilities.
