Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Senior Dillon O’Neill realized his dream when he won the FHSAA Class 1A State Weightlifting Meet on April 8 in Deland.
O’Neill lifted a combined 690-pounds to win the 238-pound weight class, beating his closest competitor by 35 pounds. With a 415-pound bench press, and a 275-pound clean and jerk, the competition was the culmination of a great lifting career at Cardinal Mooney, where he finishing second in the State Meet in 2016.
Having started weightlifting in seventh grade, O’Neill also played both offense and defense on the Cardinal Mooney Cougar Football team and is a regular altar server at School Masses.
O’Neill is the seventh Cardinal Mooney lifter to win a state title, and the first since Joe Constantino in 2004; and the others were 3-time champs Danny Redden and Ron Sherwood, along with Bill O’Leary, Marc Schmidt and Josh Smithers.
On a side note, after the competition and medal ceremony, O’Neill made it back to Sarasota in time for his Senior Prom. He will be attending Florida Gulf Coast University in Estero where he plans to participate in the weightlifting club.
