DDr. Benedict T. Nguyen has joined the Diocese of Venice as Director of Communications and the Office of Worship.

With a comprehensive background which includes education, at the parish and Diocesan levels all while holding degrees in canon law, civil law, theology and music, Dr. Nguyen comes to Florida from La Crosse, Wisc., ready to serve the Diocese of Venice. “My goal is to help spread the Gospel message and truth of Salvation. My role will be to help actualize this in whatever ways possible.”

Most recently, Dr. Nguyen has served as Assistant Professor for the Institute for Pastoral Theology of Ave Maria University where he taught courses in canon law, liturgy, morality, ecclesiology and social ethics. He also served as the Upper School Dean and as an instructor in religion, music, Latin, Greek, and classical Aristotelian logic and rhetoric at Providence (Classical) Academy in La Crosse. As an attorney and a canon lawyer, he is a member of the Wisconsin Bar Association and served as a legal and canonical consultant to the Diocese of La Crosse and various other religious institutions, apostolates, non-profit organizations, schools and individuals across the country.

For eight years he served as the Chancellor for the Diocese of La Crosse, the Diocesan Director of Communications and Media Relations, the Diocesan Director of Catholic Cemeteries, a Defender of the Bond in the Matrimonial Tribunal, and was a five-term Chairman of the Board for Catholic Charities of the Diocese. He has also taught as a Visiting Lecturer and instructor for the Liturgical Institute at Mundelein Seminary in Chicago. Prior to working for the Diocese of La Crosse, Dr. Nguyen worked for several years at a parish in that Diocese as a music director and in catechesis.

“God has blessed me in many ways and has called me to serve the Church in many different capacities through the years,” Dr. Nguyen said.

Born in Saigon, Vietnam, Dr. Nguyen came to the United State with his family at the end of the Vietnam War and grew up in Wichita, Kansas, where his family was relocated with the assistance of Catholic Charities. He is currently earning a Doctor of Ministry and Biblical Exposition from Nashotah House Theological Seminary. He holds degrees from Hamline University School of Law, Catholic University of America, the University of Dallas, and from the University of Kansas.

He and his wife Elizabeth have five children and are relocating to the Diocese from La Crosse.
