Respect Life Month offers opportunities to take action Print this post

By Bob Reddy – Florida Catholic

The Catholic Church continues to lead the world on the issue of the sanctity of life, from conception to natural death, regardless of age or condition.  It is our responsibility to do what we can to help others and to promote a greater respect for all human life. October is recognized by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops as Respect Life Month with a focus on prayer, study and action.

On Respect Life Sunday, which is Oct. 1, parishes throughout the Diocese of Venice will conduct a special second collection to augment the life-affirming work of the Diocesan Respect Life Office. The funds facilitate our witness as a faith community in southwest Florida.

In addition, there are ample opportunities for one to get involved on many levels from standing as a “Witness for Life” by uniting with other for a major simultaneous peaceful pro-life mobilization at two locations participating in the 40 Days for Life Campaign from Sept. 27 through Nov. 5.

Within the Diocese, the 40 Days for Life will take place in front of Planned Parenthood abortion centers on Central Avenue in Sarasota and the intersection of College Parkway and Winkler Road in Fort Myers. 40 Days for Life has become a highly effective movement that has grown tremendously since the first simultaneous national campaign more than 10 years ago, now involving more than a half a million people in 44 countries.  In that time, more than 13,300 babies have been saved from abortion, sparing thousands of mothers and fathers from a lifetime of regret, and 86 abortion centers have closed. Your help is needed to make this campaign effective.

Standing witness in Sarasota or Fort Myers can make a real difference. To learn more about Respect Life Month and the 40 Days for Life campaign, please visit, or register to walk at
