Mass to return to Fort Myers Beach Nov. 1

About 50 parishioners of the Church of the Ascension on Fort Myers Beach took part in a meeting Oct. 8, 2026, to openly discuss the next steps in serving the pastoral needs of the island community.

The community was devastated by Hurricane Ian in 2022, including the destruction of many parish buildings. The meeting, which took place at St. Raphael Episcopal Church because no facilities on the Ascension property are available, served as a follow-up to the Sept. 28, Mass of Remembrance which was celebrated by Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., marking the fourth anniversary of the hurricane. During that Mass, Bishop Emilio promised to keep the parishioners informed about the next steps in rebuilding the parish, as well as encouraging them to offer suggestions on how best to accomplish this. Also a priority, said Bishop Emilio, is arranging a Catholic Mass offered at a temporary location as soon as possible.

Speaking on behalf of Bishop Emilio, who was unable to attend due to the passing of Bishop Emeritus Frank J. Dewane, were Father Jaroslaw “Jarek” Sniosek, pastor of St. Leo the Great Parish, Bonita Springs; Father Bill Adams, who was pastor of Ascension at the time of Ian; Msgr. Stephen, E. McNamara, pastor of Resurrection of Our Lord Parish, Fort Myers; and Father Bob Murphy, former pastor of Ascension and current pastor of St. Raphael Parish, Englewood. In addition, Dan Beeman, Diocese of Venice Director of Building and Construction, offered information on the approval of the site plan and efforts to tear down some of the buildings.

Father Sniosek provided an update on some of the options available to the diocese for celebrating Mass, because, since 2022 the faithful have been travelling to attend Mass either at St. Leo in Bonita Springs, or at Resurrection and St. Columbkille in Fort Myers.

Options presented at the Oct. 8 meeting included Mass at a local recreation center, or setting up a temporary tent on the property while reconstruction took place for an indeterminate amount of time.

Bishop Emilio has determined that the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass be offered at 9:30 a.m. Sundays, at Bay Oaks Recreation Center, 2731 Oak St., beginning Nov. 1, All Saints Day. Bishop Emilio will be the main celebrant at the first Mass. Subsequent Masses will be celebrated by area priests and others from throughout the diocese.

Father Sniosek also sought input on what the faithful prefer for the future with some expressing a desire to save the existing parish church while others are interested in something new. Each option is being carefully examined in conjunction with the diocese, the town of Fort Myers Beach and contractors.

The meeting concluded with Father Sniosek stating that Bishop Emilio would continue to keep the parishioners informed in the coming months as plans for the reconstruction of Ascension moves forward.
