Summer Fellowship Gathering, August 2025
On August 2, 2025, the Diocese of Venice came together for a joyful and Spirit-filled celebration as permanent deacons, their wives, and parishioners gathered at San Antonio Parish in Port Charlotte. Graciously hosted by Father Lawton, the evening honored the newly ordained Class of 2025 and paid heartfelt tribute to our retired deacons. With the theme “I wish I had known then what I know now,” the gathering offered a rich exchange of wisdom, gratitude, and brotherhood.
The celebration began with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Deacon Thomas Januszka (Class of 2025) served as deacon of the altar and retired (active) Deacon Ron Dains served as deacon of the word. Following evening prayer led by Deacon John William Trainer III, the Holy Spirit’s presence was known to all.
Guests then enjoyed a beautifully prepared reception hosted by Deacon Joe Romand and the parish’s dedicated “kitchen angels.” Father Tom Heck blessed the meal—an authentic Italian feast catered by Ferraro’s, which was accompanied by laughter, heartfelt stories, and warm fellowship between new and seasoned deacons.
Throughout the evening, wisdom was generously shared. Deacon David Reardon, Director of the Permanent Diaconate, offered updates on the Diaconate Council, while Mary Reardon encouraged wives to take an active role in upcoming events. Deacon Bob Gaitens, Director of Diaconate Formation, shared a touching story about a special gift from the newly ordained to the formation program, a gesture of gratitude for the journey they had completed.
Deacon Craig Dutka reminded attendees of the vital role retired deacons continue to play, encouraging active deacons to reach out, offer companionship, and keep these men connected to the heart of diocesan life. Sylvia Dains, with both humor and honesty, reflected on her husband’s formation years, offering encouragement to spouses walking this shared path. Deacon Scott Little followed with his early ministry insights, sparking a lively exchange of experiences and lessons learned.
The beautiful evening closed in prayer, led by Deacon Joe Romand.
Deacons are strongly encouraged to take advantage of future opportunities to gather as brothers, supporting, encouraging, and strengthening one another in our shared ministry.
