Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the American bishops’ international humanitarian program. Although best known for its record of disaster response, compassionate aid to refugees and commitment to reconstruction and rehabilitation, CRS places primary focus on long-term development projects designed to help people to help themselves and to determine their own future.
Major support is derived from private, individual donors and through a program of sacrificial giving called Operation Rice Bowl(ORB), which offers families an opportunity to combine traditional Lenten practices with increased involvement in third world development projects. ORB is a program of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in which participants “give up” some meals and snacks during the Lenten season and use the time and money that would have been spent on those activities to support CRS programs overseas and local area programs.
