A Young at Heart Volunteer
If you saw Bill Schlee working out at your gym, you would never guess his age. Bill turned 100 on Jan. 25, 2012. Since retiring to Naples, Schlee has volunteered with Collier Harvest and now with St. Vincent de Paul Society Naples District Council for the past four years, collecting baked goods from the local Publix for the Meals on Wheels program. When asked why he volunteers, his response is: “I am charity oriented. I feel like I should do some good for someone who doesn’t have as much as I do.”

Catholic Schools Week filled with exciting activities
The week of Jan. 29-Feb. 4 will be an exciting time for the 15 Catholic schools within Diocese of Venice. That time is designated as Catholic Schools Week by the National Catholic Education Association and is a time for the outside world to get a closer look at the shining example Catholic schools are throughout the Diocese.

The Republican Primary race as well as the opening of the 2012 Florida legislative session has reawakened this country and state’s thirst for politics. It’s hard to find a news broadcast that isn’t talking about who is ahead in the polls, who is slipping farther from a nomination, what bills are to be voted on, and so on.

Traveling around the Diocese of Venice, it is not uncommon for people to ask, “Are we going to do “Catholics Come Home” again? That campaign was so powerful!” Indeed “Catholics Come Home” was powerful, and continues to be powerful for many. In fact, the “Catholics Come Home” parent company is still running advertisements in our Diocese. For many it was the first time in decades that they stepped back into a Catholic parish and spoke to a priest. Out of that powerful campaign there were many instances of not just individuals returning, but also entire families who came home to the Catholic Church.

The best and most appropriate way to express the thanks and gratitude of the faithful for Bishop Emeritus John J. Nevins on his 80th birthday – Mass was celebrated by the Diocese of Venice in his honor.
Scholarship Fund established for Catholic High School grads
Just in time for Catholic Schools Week, the Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida Inc., a part of the Diocese of Venice, has announced that a scholarship fund has been established to help financially needy Catholic high school students who have college aspirations.

School festival has something for everyone St. Andrew Catholic School was the center of fun and excitement for thousands who participated in the 21st Annual Festival -- all to help the school’s endowment fund.
The greatest gift anyone has received from God is the gift of life. With that reality in mind, hundreds gathered for Prayer Walks for Life in the Diocese of Venice in Port Charlotte and Sarasota and another 90 participated in the National March for Life in Washington, D.C.
