40 Days for Life opens with a save

The fall 40 Days for Life prayer campaign to end abortion in Florida and the United States opened in the Diocese of Venice with a save on the first day, Sept. 23, 2026.

The good news about the saved life of an unborn child was shared by Rich Owens, the Sarasota campaign coordinator, to a group of pro-life supporters during a kickoff event on Sept. 24, at St. Martha Parish. It is also the 29th unborn child confirmed to be saved from the Planned Parenthood abortion facility since the start of 2026.

“Standing on the sidewalk makes a difference,” Owens said. “Success comes from prayer and presence and our trust in God.”

Owens also credited the Tuesday and Wednesday Eucharistic Adoration, which is available in Mary’s House, a building co-operated by the Diocese of Venice and Community Pregnancy Clinics. The diocese provides the Most Blessed Sacrament, monstrance and tabernacle for use by people seeking a place for prayerful solitude in a building which sits in the shadow of the regional headquarters of Planned Parenthood.

Defenders of life in Sarasota are cautiously encouraged the behemoth Planned Parenthood building in Sarasota has just been listed for sale (on Sept. 25). However, unfortunately this does not mean the facility is closing, and the organization is reporting that they will relocate in Sarasota. According to Rich Owens, leader of 40 Days for Life efforts in Sarasota and on the board of Community Pregnancy Center, “Bishop Emeritus Dewane’s leadership is certainly a big part of the reason for the sale of the building, as one of the bishops of Florida, with the Church standing against Amendment 4 back in 2024,” Owens said. “If Amendment 4 had passed, Sarasota Planned Parenthood’s current giant location would not be closing. Still, this does mean that prayer and vigil efforts need to intensify, and that all must to continue to pray that Sarasota Planned Parenthood closes permanently rather than relocates,” he added. Of note, the property where Sarasota’s Community Pregnancy Center is located, right next to Planned Parenthood, is also listed for sale. But, says Owens, one thing is for sure: “Wherever Sarasota Planned Parenthood goes, Sarasota 40 Days for Life and the Sidewalk Advocates will be there to pray, bear witness and offer help and hope for mothers, fathers and their babies.” The Naples Planned Parenthood facility has also been listed for sale for some time, and is reportedly under contract; this has created renewed hope among pro-life advocates that the abortion business in Collier County may one day close its doors. There too, 40 Days for Life organizers say the need for prayer has never been greater to bring about a permanent end to abortion. Further, the Federal Government defunding Planned Parenthood has led to the merger of two affiliates in Florida, with headquarters now in West Palm Beach only.

The 40 Days for Life campaign is a national effort, including Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples, where the faithful stand in prayerful vigil outside abortion facilities seeking an end to abortion in the U.S. These sites are among 650 nationwide and will be manned each day from Sept. 23 through Nov. 1, 2026.

Whether praying outside a local abortion facility, or offering prayers from home, every participant becomes part of a larger effort to build a culture of life. Since 40 Days for Life began, 26,714 mothers have chosen life for their children; 279 abortion workers have quit their jobs; and 187 abortion centers where 40 Days for Life vigils have been held have gone out of business.

Fall 40 Days for Life, now through Nov. 1, prayer vigil hours include:

  • Fort Myers: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at 6418 Commerce Park Drive;
  • Sarasota: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7-days-a-week, at 736 Central Ave.;
  • Naples: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at 1425 Creech Road.

October is Respect Life Month

In October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October – this year Oct. 4 – is designated as Respect Life Sunday. This year’s theme for Respect Life month is “Mary, Mother of Life,” demonstrating how the life of the Blessed Mother teaches us to respect each human life in every stage and circumstance. A special collection will be taken at parishes that weekend to support pro-life activities within the Diocese of Venice.

Pray and take action to protect women and babies from abortion pills

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ committee on pro-life activities is inviting Catholics to join a focused effort of prayer and action to stop the spread of abortion pills. The initiative is taking place now through Oct. 31, 2026 (October is Respect Life Month, observed each year by the Catholic Church in the United States). Participants are encouraged to share information about the dangers of abortion pills, and sign up to send messages to pharmacies, distributors and pharmaceutical companies. Join the efforts of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment and tell major companies that sell or distribute abortion pills to change course. Send messages via https://www.votervoice.net/NCHLA/Campaigns/139193/Respond. More information is also available at https://www.respectlife.org/abortion-pills.
