People of faith from all walks of life will be standing in peaceful vigil for the next 40 days in front of abortion facilities praying for the unborn, their parents, and for an end to abortion in Florida and the United States.
The fall 40 Days for Life campaign is a national effort, including in Naples Fort Myers and Sarasota, where the faithful stand in prayerful vigil outside abortion facilities seeking and end to abortion in the U.S. These sites are among 650 nationwide, and will be manned each day from Sept. 23 through Nov. 1, 2026.
The Diocese of Venice hosts three 40 Days for Life fall campaign vigil sites in Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota.
A kickoff rally at the Fort Myers vigil site opened with about 60 people, a double rainbow and later some heavy rain. The inclement weather did not deter the faithful who knew why they were there – unborn children are killed each day in the neighboring Planned Parenthood abortion facility.
Paul Hellenbrand, who has been leading the Fort Myers fall campaign for more than a decade with her husband, Deacon Rick Hellenbrand, said that it is her continual prayer, “that this year will be the last year we have to be out here.”
Father Daniel Flens, parochial vicar at St. Andrew Parish, Cape Coral, offered the opening prayer and invocation for the 40 days peaceful prayer vigil. Father Flens being present for the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil is more than being a witness for life, or correcting a misunderstanding someone might have about abortion.
“It is publicly reminding people of the God-given dignity every person has from the moment of conception, a dignity made concrete by God’s gift of an immortal soul,” father said. “This dignity belongs to the child in the womb, but it also resides in those who are convinced by others that destroying an innocent life is their only solution to an overwhelming situation. That is why a witness of prayer is so beautiful, not just during the next 40 days, but in every place and every time. By praying with someone, or for someone, we can revive the deadened conscious’s that they are loved by God.”
Father Flens thanked those who were present for the 40 Days kickoff as well as for all who will join in prayer, either on the sidewalk, or from home, for the ongoing sacrifices of their prayer, their advocacy and their witness of upholding the dignity of human life at all its stages.
Veronica Grier was the guest speaker. She is friends with the Hellenbrand’s and shared her experience of confronting abortion in the early days not long before the 1973 Roe v. Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision that paved the way for legalized abortion in the U.S.
In college Grier was asked by a college roommate to help pay for an abortion, which she would not do. Just a few weeks later a friend informed her that her boyfriend’s parents were sending her to Mexico to get an abortion.
“Both of these incidents left me shaken, both for the dilemma my friends found themselves in and the radical solution that they were choosing with the lives of their unborn children,” Grier said. “We are not the creators of life. We are not to be the takers of it. God is God, and we are not.”
She then shared how she became involved in early pro-life protests in Austin Texas, which led to her arrest and subsequent time in state prison. Though this experience was difficult, she said it did not alter her belief that she should speak out against abortion.
Whether praying outside a local abortion facility, or offering prayers from home, every participant becomes part of a larger effort to build a culture of life. Since 40 Days for Life began, 26,714 mothers have chosen life for their children; 279 abortion workers have quit their jobs; and 187 abortion centers where 40 Days for Life vigils have been held have gone out of business.
Fall 40 Days for Life, held Sept. 23 through Nov. 1, prayer vigil hours include:
• Fort Myers: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at 6418 Commerce Park Drive;
• Sarasota: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7-days-a-week, at 736 Central Ave.;
• Naples: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at 1425 Creech Road.

13th annual St. Agnes 5K Walk/Run for Life Oct. 3
St. Agnes Parish, 7775 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples, is hosting the 13th annual St. Agnes 5K Walk/Run for Life, Oct. 23, 2026. The event is aimed at promoting a respect life message and raising funds for pro-life causes while encouraging healthy living. Life Chain Oct. 4 in Bonita Springs
All are invited to join an upcoming Life Chain event, a peaceful demonstration that aims to raise awareness and unite the community in a powerful stand for life. The Life Chain will take place 2:30-3:30 p.m., Oct. 4, 2026. Participants will stand along U.S. 41 (Tamiami Trail), from Bonita Beach Road in Bonita Beach, south to Pine Ridge Road in Naples. Life Chain is a solemn dignified gathering where participants stand together along the street holding signs with pro-life messages. Signs will be provided. October is Respect Life Month
In October, the Catholic Church in the United States celebrates Respect Life Month, and the first Sunday of October – this year Oct. 4 – is designated as Respect Life Sunday. This year’s theme for Respect Life month is “Mary, Mother of Life,” demonstrating how the life of the Blessed Mother teaches us to respect each human life in every stage and circumstance. A special collection will be taken at parishes that weekend to support pro-life activities within the Diocese of Venice.
Pray and take action to protect women and babies from abortion pills
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ committee on pro-life activities is inviting Catholics to join a focused effort of prayer and action to stop the spread of abortion pills. The initiative is taking place now through Oct. 31, 2026 (October is Respect Life Month, observed each year by the Catholic Church in the United States). Participants are encouraged to share information about the dangers of abortion pills, and sign up to send messages to pharmacies, distributors and pharmaceutical companies. Join the efforts of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Committee for a Human Life Amendment and tell major companies that sell or distribute abortion pills to change course.
