Using LEGOs to practice engineering skills
Kindergarten students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton are preparing for the future by practicing their engineering skills during the regular STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, math) class. On Jan. 8, 2026, the students were building with LEGO bricks to create a foundation of skills, knowledge and experience, for the next step in learning, which will include studying coding. Then, students will have the opportunity to become future members of the school’s Robotics Teams in Middle School.

A group of 10 Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School students attended the Model United Nations Conference at Canterbury High School in Fort Myers Jan. 10, 2026, engaging in thoughtful debate on global issues. Juniors Lily Hard and Leah Johnson were individually recognized during the competition. Cardinal Mooney students also represented the school in a General Assembly committee addressing the “Proliferation of Synthetic Opioids in Global Illicit Drug Markets,” demonstrating strong research, collaboration, and diplomacy skills
“Three Kings” chalk school doors in Fort Myers
Following a “Three Kings Mass,” at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers on Jan. 5, 2025, to mark the Feast of the Epiphany, three student “Kings” carried out their first official duty by chalking the doors around campus. Each doorway was marked with the inscription “20 + C + M + B + 26”, a traditional Epiphany blessing. The first number represents the number of centuries since Christ’s birth, while the letters stand for Christus Mansionem Benedicat (“May Christ bless this home”) and also honor the Three Kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The final number represents the current year of the 20th century. These blessings will remain on the school’s doors throughout the year as a reminder of faith, protection, and God’s presence in daily life on campus. A meaningful tradition, carried forward by some very special Kings!
Building paper airplanes is educational
First grade students at St. Mary Academy in Sarasota achieved “take off” in their STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, math) class on Jan. 12, 2026. They didn’t just learn how to make paper airplanes they learned the science behind making them fly. During the lesson, the students learned that adding a paperclip to the nose of a paper airplane helps by moving the center of gravity forward, which is crucial for achieving stable, straight, and smooth flight. This was a great way to learn complex science while having fun.

Four Diocesan Parishes offering Catholic women’s program starting in January
Four Diocesan Parishes will be starting a free Catholic women’s program beginning this month. She Shall Be Called Woman (SHE) is a place for Catholic women who want to be truly known and loved on their journey with the Lord. It features different topics of study each season, designed to educate and foster deep sisterhood and spiritual growth through talks, discussion, and prayer. Faith & Wine in Lee County Jan. 22
Faith & Wine, an outreach for uniting Catholic women of all backgrounds and ages to develop friendships and to support one another as they apply the Gospel to their lives, will have its first event of the 2025-2026 season Jan. 22, 2026, at St. John XXIII Parish, 13060 Palamino Lane, Fort Myers. Milestone Anniversary Masses Feb. 14 and March 14

The Diocese of Venice Youth & Young Adult Ministry will offer opportunities for Middle School and High School students to have a privileged moment of encounter during Lent. Diocesan Lenten youth retreats are designed to create a time and place for silence, reflection, and shared experience, allowing young people to step away from the pace and distractions of daily life and re-focus their hearts on God. Marriage Prep retreats/seminars coming soon
Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. The retreat’s purpose is to enable couples to become more aware of the privileges and responsibility of marriage. The next two of many Marriage Retreats in 2026 are March 14, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice, and June 20 at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples. Additionally, the Two Become One Marriage Retreat prepares couples 55 and older who are planning for the Sacrament of Marriage or convalidation in the Catholic Church. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese
Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility.
