Parish celebrates Children’s Day

St. Michael Parish in Wauchula and Holy Child Mission in Bowling Green held a Children’s Day “Celebrating the Innocence of a Child,” April 26, 2026. The gathering included a kid-friendly costume contest, pinatas, inflatables, and food. The event took place at the future home of Holy Child Mission, and included an open house of the facility, which is being renovated into a Catholic Church.

Big bubbles educate students

Creating soap bubbles is not just for fun. It takes patience and perseverance to get the big bubbles. Making bubbles at St. Mary Academy in Sarasota on April 28, 2026, the experiments with soap bubbles offered significant educational and developmental benefits for the children. The benefits included enhancing fine/gross motor skills, visual tracking, language development, and emotional regulation. It promotes sensory play, oral motor development, and provides early exposure to scientific concepts like surface tension. The students and teachers had a blast!

Food drive supports Catholic Charities

St. Ann Parish in Naples hosted a food drive the weekend of April 18-19, 2026, to benefit the Catholic Charities food pantry at the Judy Sullivan Family Resource Center. Boy Scouts from the Parish Troop 165 and their parents helped gather the full bags and load a truck.

WARNING – Text/Email SCAM Alert

It has once again been brought to the attention of the Diocese of Venice that parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. These messages, which were more frequent during the Christmas Season, often come from text/emails that look similar to official Diocesan/Parish/school numbers or accounts and often greet the recipient by name and have the priest’s, Bishop’s, or staff member’s name in the “From” line and/or closing signature of the message. The SPAM often claims that the priest/Bishop/staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. The message then asks the person to purchase gift cards/money and then to text/email the redemption code and PIN number. It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc. Without this awareness, some have responded to the spoofed messages, with consequences, including loss of funds. There is an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a SCAM text or email, please immediately contact the Diocesan/Parish/school directly!

Ignatian Preached Retreat at OLPH May 8-11

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice is hosting an Ignatian Preached Retreat May 8-11, 2026. This three-night silent retreat will introduce participants to the great themes of the Spiritual Exercises in a group setting. The schedule includes conferences each day, daily Mass, and an opportunity to meet at least once with the retreat director for Confession and/or spiritual direction. Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus Missionary Opportunity for Summer 2026

The Diocese of Venice is now accepting applications for college-aged young adults to serve as Totus Tuus Missionaries for the 2026 Parish evangelization and catechesis Summer Program. This role involves traveling in teams to approximately seven parishes throughout the Diocese, leading catechetical sessions for children and youth.  Responsibilities include teaching the Catholic Faith using the Totus Tuus curriculum, facilitating activities, including skits and songs, working collaboratively as a team, teaching about the Mass, leading Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, discussion groups for teenagers and Evening Prayer. This is a paid position. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and a High School graduate and must be available for the complete program schedule, May 20 – July 24, 2026. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice for pastoral outreach, to distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Neocatechumenal Way commissioning ceremony held

Bishop Frank J. Dewane presided over a prayer service of the Neocatechumenal Way March 11, 2026, at Jesus the Worker Parish in Fort Myers. The gathering included commissioning of several members to become local missionaries. The Neocatechumenal Way was initiated in Madrid in 1964, and is dedicated to post- and pre-baptismal formation of Christians, based on the Word of God, the Eucharist and the Christian community. The Way engages families to establish the presence of the Catholic Church in countries where the Church is absent or tiny, or to revive and strengthen the presence of Catholic communities in difficult and ‎highly secularized areas. During the prayer service the candidates were called to offer their testimony of faith. Each candidate was called forth by name and presented a Bible and recited an oath of commitment as they were commissioned and sent to be witnesses to God in the community, announcing the Good News of His resurrection. They also committed to live their lives according to the Nicene Creed, and agreed to let the Holy Spirit drive out their sins of doubt and guide them through their lives.

School Cocktail Party a huge success

St. Mary Academy in Sarasota hosted a cocktail party which was a resounding success March 12, 2026. School leadership brought donors together who share the vision for the mission of the school with programs for diverse learners, five to fifteen years old. St. Mary Academy works with children who are struggling academically, and children with special learning needs.  Students are average to above-average in intelligence and may have: Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Dyslexia, Speech and Language Disorders, Attention Deficit Disorders (ADD), Anxiety, high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), or other exceptionalities. Students learn in classes of 13 students or fewer and are taught by certified teachers. The school also has occupational and speech therapists on-site. The school was given a $50,000 match challenge from the Kaminski Family Foundation, of which the leadership was thankful, and the school is poised to exceed the goal! Two Catholic high schools participate in Model UN conference

The Model UN teams representing Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota and Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers were among 20 participating in the Southwest Florida Model United Nations Conference on Feb. 28, 2026, at Florida Gulf Coast University in Estero. Both teams earned multiple recognitions for their leadership and work throughout the event. The Cardinal Mooney team finished fourth out of 20 overall. The Mooney club earned $1,000 toward its Mental Health project, supporting student-led initiatives focused on awareness and advocacy.  The conference also recognized the leadership of the team’s advisor, Elizabeth Smith, who was honored with the SWFLMUN Coach of the Year Award for her dedication to mentoring and guiding students in diplomacy, debate, and global awareness. Individual honors were also awarded to Cristina Peterson, who earned 1st Place for her position paper out of 250 submissions, receiving a $2,500 award for her exceptional research, writing, and analysis. The Bishop Verot team received both the Diana Gowen Most Improved School Award and the Outstanding Team Leadership Award, recognizing the growth and strength of the program. Their advisor, Rob Schmidbauer, along with students Savannah Truax and Isabella Mparaganda, were also recognized for their outstanding leadership. Savannah and Isabella were additionally selected to mentor ten Fulbright scholars—internationally recognized teachers participating in a prestigious U.S. cultural exchange program—as they work to launch Model UN programs in schools around the world. In addition, Isabella was named Outstanding Delegate in the Press Corps category. Well done everyone!

40 Days for Life Spring Campaign through March 29

The 40 days for Life Spring Campaign (from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026) aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and peaceful all-day vigils in front of abortion businesses. Annunciation presentation March 25 in Naples

St. William Parish, 610 Seagate Drive, Naples, is hosting a mini-conference with Dr. Edward Sri from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., March 25, 2026. Diocesan-wide Reconciliation times March 27-28

Please note that the precept of confessing grave sins and receiving Holy Communion at least once during the Lenten Season merits a reminder. To facilitate this requirement, in addition to regular Parish Confession hours, every Parish in the Diocese of Venice will be open with a confessor present 4 – 8 p.m., March 27, 2026, and 9 a.m. – noon, March 28. These opportunities are made available so that the faithful may find ample opportunity to receive God’s Mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Lenten Season.

Catholic-Jewish Dialogue movie screening March 29

St. William Parish, 750 Seagate Drive, Naples, in partnership with the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County, is hosting a screening of the movie, “Irena Sendler – In the Name of Their Mothers,” at 2:30 p.m., March 29, 2026, in the Parish Community Center. Irena Sendler was a young Catholic social worker in Warsaw, Poland. In this film, she tells the remarkable story of how she and a group of young Polish women risked their lives to save thousands of Jewish children from the Warsaw ghetto. Most of the hidden children survived the war and many were later reunited with their Jewish families. At age 33, she was captured and tortured by the German Gestapo but refused to divulge anything about their underground operation. At 95, Sendler tells this story years later. Palm Sunday and Easter TV Mass to air at special times

The Televised Mass for the Homebound on Palm Sunday (March 29, 2026), and Easter Sunday (April 5 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour on both Sundays. Because of the length, these two Sundays the broadcast will air at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 8 a.m. on FOX Florida. Please check your cable provider for channel listings. Jericho Walk – Sarasota 40 Days for Life closing event March 29

The Jericho Walk, Sarasota’s 40 Days for Life Spring Campaign closing event will take place at 5:30 p.m., at the parking lot of Community Pregnancy Clinics, 1419 7th St. Sarasota. A Jericho Walk is as Joshua and the Israelites did to bring down the walls of the Jericho. The walk is seven times in silent prayer around the block which contains the Sarasota Planned Parenthood abortion facility, for a distance of approximately ¼-mile, praying to God to bring down the walls around hearts to end abortion in Sarasota, Florida and the U.S. Participants who do not wish to walk are encouraged to remain and pray in the parking of Community Pregnancy Clinics. The event will also include a prayer service and reflection on the completed 40 Days for Life prayer campaign to end abortion as well as a look forward to continuing the prayer campaign against abortion throughout the year. All are welcome. Bring your own chair to the event.

Handel’s “Messiah” to be performed on Palm Sunday in Naples

The St. William Parish Music Ministry will present selections from Handel’s “Messiah” at 4 p.m., Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026, in the Church at 601 Seagate Drive, Naples. G.F. Handel’s choral masterpiece will highlight the Passion and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, featuring professional soloists, orchestra and the St. William adult choir, under the direction of Richard Owen, St. William Music Director. The free performance will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.

Chrism Mass March 31 in Bonita Springs

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held 10:30 a.m., March 31, 2026, at St. Leo the Great Parish, 28290 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass.

Retreat Center Triduum Retreat

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice is hosting a Triduum Retreat, Easter Weekend, April 2-5, 2026. This retreat begins with supper on Holy Thursday and ends with breakfast on Easter Sunday.  The liturgies of the Lord’s Supper, Way of the Cross, Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion, Easter Vigil, and Sunrise Easter Liturgy are celebrated. A series of six one-hour conferences on various topics is offered throughout the retreat.  In addition, the opportunity for Confession is available. Mass for Victims of Abuse April 10 in Venice

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and in conjunction with the Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), the Diocese of Venice will hold a Mass for Victims of Child Abuse for the 18th consecutive year with Bishop Frank J. Dewane as the Celebrant. The Mass will take place at 8:30 a.m., Friday, April 10, 2026, at Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., Venice. All are invited to attend as we come together to pray for the victims of abuse.

Catholic Health Care Ethics Conference April 11 in Fort Myers

Medical professionals, students, and interested laypeople are invited to the third annual Converging Roads health care ethics conference 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., April 11, 2026, at the Church of the Resurrection Parish, 8051 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers. Project Rachel retreat in Spanish April 18

For women or men who have been scarred by abortion, the Diocese offers “Project Rachel,” an outreach of the Catholic Church to those who are suffering and in need of healing following an abortion. This program offers help through the sacraments, retreats, and referrals for professional counseling, all confidentially. The next one-day healing retreat will be held April 18, 2026, in Spanish. Verot wrestler wins State Title

Bishop Verot Catholic High School wrestler Bennett Sweitzer became the Florida High School Athletic Association State Champion in the 175 pound weight class on March 7, 2026, in Kissimmee.  Bennett is also the first wrestler in the Fort Myers school’s history to advance that far in the state tournament and earn a title. Other Bishop Verot wrestlers who reached the state tournament were Quinn Enguita, Tiago Passos, and Hudson Sweitzer. In addition, two Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School wrestlers from Sarasota qualified for the state competition. Blake Roulund reached the state finals earning a silver medal, the best state placer in Cardinal Mooney history. Luke Ladle also qualified for the state tournament. Congratulations to each of the athletes!

Bishop Dewane celebrates 76th birthday

To celebrate the 76th birthday of Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 9, 2026, the Catholic Center staff gathered in the main conference room in Venice. In addition to singing “Happy Birthday,” an Irish poem expressing the blessing of priests was presented. Two birthday cakes, one chocolate and one vanilla, and fresh fruit were offered.

 

Sarasota student wins national art competition

Chloe, an eighth grader at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota recently received her 1st Place Award in the Family Rosary “Try Prayer! It Works!” Art Competition sponsored by the Family Rosary Holy Cross Family Ministries. Holy Cross Family Ministries is a family of Catholic ministries that inspires, promotes and fosters the prayer life and spiritual well-being of families throughout the world.

Youth make lasagnas for those in need

The St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish youth group in Parrish recently completed a service project to make 10 lasagnas to donate to Lasagna Love which ensures dignity and support for the needy. The program delivers kindness without judgment or qualifications. Whether someone is facing financial challenges, emotional overwhelm, medical issues, or any other hardship, Lasagna Love strives to provide relief, hope, and connection through the simple yet profound gesture of a warm meal.

 

Two named National Merit Finalists

Sofia Mayus and Ambrielle Calixte of Bishop Verot Catholic School in Fort Myers were named National Merit Scholarship finalists. They now rank in the top 1% of high school seniors and have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,800 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million. The process to become a Finalist included submitting a detailed application with information about academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, as well as honors and awards received. Advancing from Semifinalist to Finalist is no small accomplishment. It reflects continued academic excellence, consistency, and an unwavering commitment to their goals.

Lenten Mission in Naples March 15-17

Marriage Prep retreats/seminars coming soon

Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. The retreat’s purpose is to enable couples to become more aware of the privileges and responsibility of marriage. The next two of many Marriage Retreats in 2026 are March 21, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice, and June 20 at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples. Additionally, the Two Become One Marriage Retreat prepares couples 55 and older who are planning for the Sacrament of Marriage or convalidation in the Catholic Church. Diocesan-wide Reconciliation times March 27-28

Please note that the precept of confessing grave sins and receiving Holy Communion, at least once during the Lenten Season merits a reminder. To facilitate this requirement, in addition to regular Parish Confession hours, every Parish in the Diocese of Venice will be open with a confessor present 4 – 8 p.m., March 27, 2026, and 9 a.m. – noon, March 28. These opportunities are made available so that the faithful may find ample opportunity to receive God’s Mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Lenten Season.

Palm Sunday and Easter TV Mass to air at special times

The Televised Mass for the Homebound on Palm Sunday (March 29, 2026), and Easter Sunday (April 5 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour on both Sundays. Chrism Mass March 31 in Bonita Springs

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held 10:30 a.m., March 31, 2026, at St. Leo the Great Parish, 28290 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs. Retreat Center Triduum Retreat

Cape Coral students “Make-a-Difference”

Serving with heart, leading with faith, and making a difference, eighth grade students at St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral spent Feb. 23, 2026, giving back for “Make-a-Difference Day.” Representing the school, students did service works, such as packing meals, sorting clothes, cleaning, landscaping and more at The Cape Coral Caring Center, Special Populations, St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store, Kiwanis Thrift Store, Bishop Verot Catholic High School, and even at the school. The “Make-a-Difference Day” is an annual outreach in the community which teaches the students how to live their faith through service and action.

Knights donate wheelchairs to Sarasota schools

St. Mary Academy and St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota received three wheelchairs Feb. 12, 2026, personally delivered by a distinguished delegation of the Knights of Columbus. Located together on Fruitville Road, the two schools welcomed the Knights with enthusiasm and gratitude. The wheelchairs will be used to assist students in reaching the school nurse during medical emergencies, ensuring timely and safe care. Since 2003, the Knights of Columbus have funded and delivered tens of thousands of wheelchairs throughout the United States and around the world. This generous donation reflects the organization’s core mission of charity, unity, and service to those in need. It also highlights the powerful impact that partnerships between community organizations and schools can have on the lives of children.

Execution Vigil and March 3

The execution of Florida inmates by the State of Florida continues at an alarming rate. A record 19 executions took place in Florida in 2025, with the first executions of 2026 taking place on Feb. 10 and Feb. 24. For each Florida execution, a Prayer Vigil is scheduled at San Pedro Parish Chapel, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Prayer Vigils begin at 5:30 p.m., last less than an hour and include hymns, a Gospel reading, reflections, intercessions and a praying of the Rosary. A pause takes place at 6 p.m., the time the actual executions take place. Everyone involved in the execution process is prayed for; the doctor administering the execution, the witnesses, the victims and their families, and we pray for a conversion of the condemned, and an end to the death penalty. The next execution Prayer Vigil is March 3, to coincide with the execution of Billy Leon Kearse.

Milestone Wedding Anniversary Mass March 14

An invitation is extended to all couples celebrating a milestone wedding anniversary (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50 or more years) to join Bishop Frank J. Dewane for an Anniversary Mass in your honor. The Diocese of Venice hosts two Wedding Anniversary Masses each year (one in the northern part of the Diocese and the second in the southern part) to accommodate all. The first Mass in 2026 was Feb. 14 at St. Leo the Great Parish in Bonita Springs. The second Mass will be held March 14, 11:00 a.m., at St. Thomas More Parish, 2506 Gulf Gate Drive, Sarasota. Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. The retreat’s purpose is to enable couples to become more aware of the privileges and responsibility of marriage. Please note that the precept of confessing grave sins and receiving Holy Communion, at least once during the Lenten Season, merits a reminder. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Knights donate wheelchairs to Sarasota schools

St. Mary Academy and St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota received three wheelchairs Feb. 12, 2026, personally delivered by a distinguished delegation of the Knights of Columbus. Located together on Fruitville Road, the two schools welcomed the Knights with enthusiasm and gratitude. The wheelchairs will be used to assist students in reaching the school nurse during medical emergencies, ensuring timely and safe care. Since 2003, the Knights of Columbus have funded and delivered tens of thousands of wheelchairs throughout the United States and around the world. This generous donation reflects the organization’s core mission of charity, unity, and service to those in need. It also highlights the powerful impact that partnerships between community organizations and schools can have on the lives of children.

Students bring history to life

St. Ann Catholic School eighth graders in Naples brought history to life with a Living Museum on Feb. 13, 2026. The students transformed into influential historical figures from the past and present. From presidents and pioneers to saints, scientists, activists, and innovators, each student represented the life, accomplishments, and legacy of their chosen figure. Students put their dedication, creativity, and confidence on display as they shared their research and stood proudly “in character” while guests walked through our museum. History truly came alive in the most engaging and inspiring way.

 

 

 

Project Rachel retreat Feb. 24

Execution Vigils Feb. 24 and March 3

The execution of Florida inmates by the State of Florida continues at an alarming rate. A record 19 executions took place in Florida in 2025, with the first execution of 2026 taking place on Feb. 10. For each Florida execution, a Prayer Vigil is scheduled at San Pedro Parish Chapel, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Prayer Vigils begin at 5:30 p.m., last less than an hour and include hymns, a Gospel reading, reflections, intercessions and a praying of the Rosary. A pause takes place at 6 p.m., the time the actual executions take place. Everyone involved in the execution process is prayed for; the doctor administering the execution, the witnesses, the victims and their families, and we pray for a conversion of the condemned, and an end to the death penalty. The next execution Prayer Vigil is Feb. 24, 2026, which will coincide with the scheduled execution of Melvin Trotter, who is scheduled to be the second person executed in Florida this year. Another Vigil will take place March 3, to coincide with the execution of Billy Leon Kearse.

Wauchula man ordained to priesthood for Institute of the Incarnate Work

Congratulations to Father Miguel Castro III, IVE, of St. Michael Parish in Wauchula, who was ordained to the Priesthood for the Institute of the Incarnate Word, Feb. 7, 2026, at St. Matthew Cathedral in Washington, D.C. Father Miguel is the first priest ordained from Hardee County and was scheduled to celebrate his First Mass at St. Michael on Feb. 12. St. Michael is served by women religious, Servant Sisters of the Lord and the Virgin of Matara, who are part from the Incarnate Word order.

Lunar New Year celebrated by Vietnamese Catholic Community in Fort Myers

The Vietnamese Catholic Community of St. John XXIII Parish in Fort Myers held an early celebration of the Lunar New Year on Feb. 8, 2026, at Our Lady of Light Parish in Fort Myers. The celebration, which included a formal dinner and live music, was moved due to ongoing renovations at St. John XXIII. Bishop Frank J. Dewane addressed the faithful saying, “It is I who am honored to be with all of you as a part of this festive celebration. Your presence in the Diocese is positive and beautiful and the contribution you make here to your Parish is substantial.” Adam Nguyen, who has been a leader in the Fort Myers Vietnamese community since its founding many years ago, said it was an honor to have the Bishop present for the community celebration. Also present were Father Jimmy Pham, CRM, the current Chaplain for the Vietnamese community at St. John XXIII, Father Jay Raju, Pastor at St. John XXIII, and Diocesan Seminarian Lam Vo, who is studying at St. Vincent de Paul Regional Seminary in Boynton Beach and is currently serving as Pastoral Year at the Parish. A larger, family-oriented, outdoor celebration of the Lunar New Year will take place at St. John XXIII on Feb. 15.

Parish Gala held at local aquarium

The Our Lady of the Angels Parish 2026 Gala, themed “Into the Deep,” was held Feb. 6, 2026, at Mote Aquarium at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota. “Put out into the deep,” comes from the Gospel of Luke and is a call from Christ Himself to journey into the depths of faith, purpose, and mission. This special evening was both a celebration of the profound ways the Parish continues to inspire and a courageous call to journey further—deeper in spirituality, service, and generosity. Bishop Frank J. Dewane was the honored guest and noted how the Lakewood Ranch Parish has gained a reputation for its generosity to the community while undergoing rapid growth. The evening included live and silent auctions as well as live music.

Buddy program helps students improve literacy

To help improve the reading skills for students at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota, teachers have developed a buddy system where second grade students read to their pre-kindergarten-4 counterparts. The most recent team-up took place Feb. 5, 2026, helps the older students to improve with their language skills such as fluency and intonation while helping to teach their buddies how to read better all while building friendships and community in the school.

School hydroponics garden helps food pantry

The hydroponics garden at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton has been generating impressive yields of cabbage and tomatoes in recent days. On Feb. 6, 2026, representatives from the school’s Builders Club and K-Kids (Kiwanis Kids), made a delivery to the St. Joseph Food Pantry. The school partners with the food pantry throughout each school year to collect needed food and to also share what is grown in the hydroponics garden. The fresh vegetables were a welcome addition to what was offered at the pantry.

Walk for the Poor in Cape Coral Feb. 21

The 5th Annual Walk for the Poor to support the outreach of the St. Vincent de Paul St. Andrew Conference in Cape Coral will take place 10 a.m., Feb. 21, 2026, at St. Andrew Parish, 2628 Del Prado Blvd., Cape Coral. The walk will help families throughout Cape Coral as every day, SVdP volunteers provide emergency food, medical or prescription cost assistance, and help to restore utilities or prevent cut-off. Every dollar raised goes back to the local community. In 2025, the St. Andrew Conference processed more than 1,100 phone calls, conducted more than 350 home visits and helped 547 households with 1,500 people, including 600 children. Execution Vigils Feb. 24 and March 3

The execution of Florida inmates by the State of Florida continues at an alarming rate. A record 19 executions took place in Florida in 2025, with the first execution of 2026 taking place on Feb. 10. For each Florida execution, a Prayer Vigil is scheduled at San Pedro Parish Chapel, 14380 Tamiami Trail, North Port. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. The Prayer Vigils begin at 5:30 p.m., last less than an hour and include hymns, a Gospel reading, reflections, intercessions and a praying of the Rosary. A pause takes place at 6 p.m., the time the actual executions take place. Everyone involved in the execution process is prayed for; the doctor administering the execution, the witnesses, the victims and their families, and we pray for a conversion of the condemned, and an end to the death penalty. The next execution Prayer Vigil is Feb. 24, 2026, which will coincide with the scheduled execution of Melvin Trotter, who is scheduled to be the second person executed in Florida this year. Another Vigil will take place March 3, to coincide with the execution of Billy Leon Kearse.

Cathedral Youth “Rock the Universe”

The youth group from Epiphany Cathedral in Venice took part in “Rock the Universe” Jan. 23-25, 2026, in Orlando. “Rock the Universe” is a Christian music festival now in its 28th year. The trip gave the teens space to step away from the noise of everyday life and encounter something bigger – faith lived out joyfully, community built naturally, and confidence to worship without hesitation. The trip included the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, time for praise and worship, and Adoration. Between late nights, shared laughs, and meaningful moments, seeds were planted that will continue growing long after the music stopped. These experiences create room for connection – with God, with one another, and with the Church – in ways that don’t always happen within the walls of the classroom. Lindie Ross, Youth Ministry Coordinator, said she witnessed teens encouraging one another, showing up fully, and embracing their faith with courage and authenticity. As a bonus, the teens also spent time at Universal Studios Orlando, where the teens wore a t-shirt which read: “We saw His star at its rising and have come to do Him homage – Epiphany Cathedral, Venice, FL.”

Mooney Cheer team places 5th in States

The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Competitive Cheer Team placed 5th in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 1A state championships. The Lady Cougars reached the finals by topping the semifinals competition out of 24 teams Jan. 22, 2026, in Lakeland, advancing to their first state championship round. In the finals the team finished 5th out of nine finalists. What an amazing run. Congratulations!

Naples Parish author event Feb. 3

Human trafficking awareness training in North Port Feb. 5

Marriage Prep retreats/seminars coming soon

Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. The retreat’s purpose is to enable couples to become more aware of the privileges and responsibility of marriage. Using LEGOs to practice engineering skills

Kindergarten students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton are preparing for the future by practicing their engineering skills during the regular STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, math) class. On Jan. 8, 2026, the students were building with LEGO bricks to create a foundation of skills, knowledge and experience, for the next step in learning, which will include studying coding. Then, students will have the opportunity to become future members of the school’s Robotics Teams in Middle School.

A group of 10 Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School students attended the Model United Nations Conference at Canterbury High School in Fort Myers Jan. 10, 2026, engaging in thoughtful debate on global issues. Juniors Lily Hard and Leah Johnson were individually recognized during the competition. Cardinal Mooney students also represented the school in a General Assembly committee addressing the “Proliferation of Synthetic Opioids in Global Illicit Drug Markets,” demonstrating strong research, collaboration, and diplomacy skills

“Three Kings” chalk school doors in Fort Myers

Following a “Three Kings Mass,” at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers on Jan. 5, 2025, to mark the Feast of the Epiphany, three student “Kings” carried out their first official duty by chalking the doors around campus. Each doorway was marked with the inscription “20 + C + M + B + 26”, a traditional Epiphany blessing. The first number represents the number of centuries since Christ’s birth, while the letters stand for Christus Mansionem Benedicat (“May Christ bless this home”) and also honor the Three Kings: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. The final number represents the current year of the 20th century. These blessings will remain on the school’s doors throughout the year as a reminder of faith, protection, and God’s presence in daily life on campus. A meaningful tradition, carried forward by some very special Kings!

Building paper airplanes is educational

First grade students at St. Mary Academy in Sarasota achieved “take off” in their STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, math) class on Jan. 12, 2026. They didn’t just learn how to make paper airplanes they learned the science behind making them fly. During the lesson, the students learned that adding a paperclip to the nose of a paper airplane helps by moving the center of gravity forward, which is crucial for achieving stable, straight, and smooth flight. This was a great way to learn complex science while having fun.

The retreat’s purpose is to enable couples to become more aware of the privileges and responsibility of marriage. The next two of many Marriage Retreats in 2026 are March 14, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice, and June 20 at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples. Additionally, the Two Become One Marriage Retreat prepares couples 55 and older who are planning for the Sacrament of Marriage or convalidation in the Catholic Church. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Young participants spend summer growing closer to Christ

Hearts are on fire for Jesus Christ for the 1,650 young faithful who took part in the Totus Tuus weekly sessions at 17 host Parishes in the Diocese of Venice throughout the summer.

The goal of the Totus Tuus program is to help young people develop in their understanding of the faith and strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ. Just as important, the program teaches the boys and girls that faith is fun! Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours,” was a motto of St. John Paul II, taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary.” It signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary.

On July 24, 2025, young participants in the program at Our Lady of the Angels Parish joyously participated in the opening prayers and songs. They expressed their enthusiasm about how much fun they were having and how the Totus Tuus missionaries served as an inspiration for them. Here is just a small sample of what the young people had to say: “Jesus loves me!” “Mary is our Queen in Heaven!” “This is the best!” “Each day is better and better!” “Awesome!”

Fourteen Totus Tuus missionaries, trained young men and women, mostly college-age, led the program, and were just as enthusiastic as the young campers as the summer drew to a close. Each was moved by the experience of imparting faith on eager young minds.

Missionary Jesina Cortez, who is from St. James Parish and Santigo Mission in Lake Placid, returned for her second time as a missionary because of how much she got out of it in 2024. This year, she said the experience was just as rewarding with the best part making personal connections to the youngest of students. “To witness their wonder and love for Christ develop through the week was inspiring. It was hard to say good-bye to each group.”

“Once again, throughout the summer the Diocese was blessed to have the Totus Tuus missionaries who brought an excitement about the faith to different Parishes each week, helping to awaken in children of all ages a desire and enthusiasm for holiness,” said Bishop Frank J. Dewane.

Run by the Diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adults, Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to the sacrifices and blessings of the various Christian vocations through evangelization and catechesis. The program inspires young people to develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

Totus Tuus works to complement what the children are learning from their parents, who are the first and best educators in matters of faith. This is something Bishop Dewane has stressed since the program had its trial run in the Diocese in 2022.

Diocesan Youth and Youth Adult Director Andres Prias said during the past four years of the Totus Tuus program he has witnessed its growth, “not only in the number of Parishes involved or participants attending, but in how the experience itself has taken root. Families, youth, and children have truly made it their own. It comes down to the work of the missionaries, whose witness has touched so many hearts, giving life to the words: “We are all yours, Lord Jesus.’”

 

Jim Gontis, Diocesan Director of Evangelization, said the expansion to 17 Parishes this year came about through the unwavering support of Bishop Dewane, and the collaborative effort that begins with the outstanding missionaries, Parish Pastors and Administrators, as well as the Parish leaders and volunteers.

“One of the most beautiful fruits of Totus Tuus is the joy on the faces of the young people,” Gontis said. “This was evident as they encountered Jesus in the Mass, in Eucharistic Adoration, and in the healing grace of Confession. Many parents remarked how much their children shared with them about what they learned about the Sacraments, the power of the Rosary, and the Catholic Faith as a whole.”

Summer camps bring smiles to young faces, and hearts closer to Jesus

The summer season is a time for family vacations but also summer fun at home. Many  children in the Diocese of Venice participate in summer camps where Parishes and Catholic schools offer a chance for faith and fun.

At the forefront of the summer programs is the ongoing Totus Tuus initiative of the Diocese of Venice. The week-long day camps, brought to the Diocese in 2022 by Bishop Frank J. Dewane, are taking place at different Parishes throughout the Diocese each week for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading  the campers.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. They also learn about the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

In the evenings, the older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditation and prayer. One evening includes participation in Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In the first five weeks, the program has taken place at 12 Parishes, with the most recent camps being held the week of July 6-11, 2025, at St. Cecilia Parish in Fort Myers, and jointly at Our Lady of Light and St. John XXIII Parishes, both in Fort Myers. Priests and staff have universally expressed how positive the program has been for their entire congregation.

The final two weeks of the program take place at the following Parishes: St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; and St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Additional Camp Programs in the Diocese of Venice

Many Parishes also host a Vacation Bible School. This weeklong camp is intended to teach children to love God and thank the Lord for all the wonderful gifts in the world. A typical day includes children learning Bible stories, and then singing and dancing in praise of God. The week concludes with a large celebration and participation in the Mass.

While many teens volunteer at summer camps, Parishes also offer programs to support them through week-long retreats or the participation in regional youth conferences.

Uniquely, St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted a series of weekly camps in June. The separate weeks focused on boys, girls, and then teens. Led by the women religious at the Parish, the Servant Sisters of the Virgin of Matara, these camps are full of fun and faith.

Multiple Diocesan Catholic schools hosted STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) camps. Some covered several weeks for eager students.

Area Catholic high schools hosted a variety of sports camps (soccer, football, basketball, cheerleading and many others). These camps offer a chance for younger children to learn the skills needed to excel in different sports while at the same time having a bit of fun.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., hosts three summer programs. In Bonita Springs, the program includes a variety of games and projects giving the children the opportunity to show off their athletic, artistic and other skills. The campers also take a variety of interesting field trips. The camp at Catholic Charities Children’s Center in Fort Myers nurtures the youth by guiding and inspiring them to become lifelong learners, community builders, and individuals dedicated to serving others. Similarly, the camp at Casa San Juan Bosco farmworker community in Arcadia offers a program where children work with crafts, improve their reading skills and of course have fun.

These are just some of the examples of the exciting activities that are taking place for the thousands of young people in the Diocese during the “slow” season. Faith can be fun!
