Florida Catholic Charities leaders unite in mission

In a powerful display of unity and forward-thinking, nearly 120 representatives from Catholic Charities organizations across Florida gathered at the Bethany Center in Lutz for the 2025 Florida State Catholic Charities Conference, hosted by the Diocese of St. Petersburg on April 3 – 4, 2025. This marks the first statewide conference for Florida’s Catholic Charities staff since 2019 and focused heavily on disaster preparedness, collaboration, and leadership.

Each day of the conference began in prayer and fellowship with Mass. On day one, Msgr. Roberto Garza of the Archdiocese of Miami celebrated Mass, offering a meaningful start grounded in faith and reflection. On day two, Most Rev. Gregory L. Parkes, Bishop of the Diocese of St. Petersburg, presided, encouraging all in attendance to carry their mission forward with renewed purpose and trust in God’s guidance.

The conference opened with a keynote address by Kerry Alys Robinson, President and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, who inspired attendees with a message of hope, mission, and resilience.

Throughout the day, breakout sessions and keynote presentations offered opportunities for growth and reflection. Kim Burgo, Vice President of Disaster Operations at Catholic Charities USA, led a session on disaster assistance leadership, sharing national insights and strategies. Msgr. Garza delivered a moving presentation on Catholic Identity, grounding the conference in the spiritual foundation that guides all Catholic Charities work. Amber Gum, presented on self-care, offering practical tools for managing compassion fatigue and sustaining personal wellness in demanding roles.

Additional breakout discussions included media engagement and disaster case management, fostering cross-diocesan collaboration and knowledge sharing. The day concluded with a dynamic leadership session presented by Christopher Ice, a consultant, emphasizing purpose-driven service and strategic vision.

In the evening, participants gathered for a reception and dinner, reflecting on the day’s lessons and celebrating the shared mission of Catholic Charities: to serve those most in need with compassion, dignity, and faith.

“Gathering like this renews our sense of purpose and reminds us that we’re not alone in this mission,” said Christopher Root, CEO of Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice, Inc. “By sharing ideas, challenges, and successes, we strengthen our ability to serve with compassion and bring lasting hope to those who need us most.”

Palm Sunday and Easter TV Mass to air at special times

The televised Mass for the Homebound on Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025), and Easter Sunday (April 20 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour on both Sundays. Because of the length, the broadcast on these two Sundays will air at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 12 p.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on WFTX-TV (FOX-4). Two honored by Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County

Father Bob Kantor, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Naples, and Marty Gauthier, co-chair of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County, were honored by the Dialogue with the first-ever Power of Community Award, March 30, 2025. Gauthier and Father Kantor were recognized as Catholic-Jewish Dialogue Healers and Helpers (Tikkun Olam). The award was presented during a celebration at the Nini Iser Jewish Cultural Center and was created to recognize individuals for their years of unwavering dedication to the Jewish community of Greater Naples through fostering fellowship, demonstrating steadfast support, and collaborating on shared goals.

Local golfer participates in Masters Drive, Chip, and Putt contest

St. Joseph Catholic School student Tobias Gordic-Ronderos, 11, earned a spot in the Drive, Chip, and Putt contest at the Augusta National Golf Course on April 6, 2025. Augusta is home to the Masters, one of the four Major Tournaments in professional golf. Qualifying for this nationally televised event is an incredible accomplishment, having won a regional qualifier to earn his ticket to the national competition which was televised on the Golf Channel. Tobias, from Bradenton, finished tied for 7th overall, out of 10 competitors. While not the result he was hoping for, Tobias did earn the best score for putting in his age group. Well done, Tobias!

Experiment explores famous disaster

On May 3, 2025, in Fort Myers, science students at Bishop Verot Catholic High School learned about the 1937 Hindenburg zeppelin disaster in class exploring everything from its historical context to the various theories surrounding the cause of the explosion. Through a hands-on experiment, the students generated hydrogen gas, captured it in a balloon, and safely ignited it to simulate the Hindenburg disaster. This engaging approach allowed them to witness the reactions firsthand and apply their knowledge to propose their own theories about what might have happened. Learning history has never been so explosive.

Chrism Mass to be celebrated in Naples on April 15

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Priests 50 Years: Father Gregory Klein, O. Carm., Father Normando Feliz, and Father Michael Mullen;

Priests 25 Years: Father Luis Pacheco, and Father Saji Ellickal Joseph, MCBS;

Deacon 25 Years: Deacon Richard Klish.

Theology on Tap April 24

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting on the fourth Thursday of the month (April 24, 2025) at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. Bereavement Retreat for Hispanic parents

Deacon Roberto Landron is hosting a weekend Spanish-language retreat based on the Catholic faith to offer grieving parents a safe space of peace, comfort, and hope, as they form community with those who share their path. The retreat is April 25 – 27, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. The retreat costs $150 for individuals and $250 for couples. Two watch parties for Canonization of Carlo Acutis

In recognition of the canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint, two Parishes will host special events. Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., Venice, will hold a special event beginning at 12:30 p.m., April 27, 2025, where participants can view sacred relics of St. Carlo Acutis and St. Faustina Kowalska, and watch a movie about Carlo’s life. The event begins with an Italian picnic and will include a special Holy Hour, including a Divine Mercy Chaplet and Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome. St. Patrick Parish, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, will host a live watch party for the canonization at 4:30 a.m. April 27. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. The Parish will also display the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit (created by the new saint) in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 27, when a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration will begin.

On both days, several videos about the young Saint’s life will be shown throughout the exhibition. In addition, there will also be a signing station for a get-well card for Pope Francis, a prayer station for prayers to the Holy Father and to the newest saint, and a prayer wall to post intentions. Divine Mercy Service in Fort Myers April 27

Our Lady of Light Parish, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers, will be hosting its annual Divine Mercy Sunday service on April 27, 2025. The prayer service opens with Adoration followed by Benediction from 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m., to allow the faithful time in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Mercy Image. This will be followed from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. by a bilingual (Spanish and English) Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Consecration. All are welcome.

Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2 – 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Ignatian Preached Silent Retreat in May

Father Greg Cleveland, OMV, will introduce the great themes of the Spiritual Exercises in a group setting during an Ignatian Preached Retreat, from May 9 to May 12, 2025. Ave Maria Youth Conference July 11-13

The 2025 Ave Maria University “Proclaim” Youth Conference is July 11-13, 2025. The theme for the Conference is “But as for you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:60). Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. One year of college/work is preferred, but mature recent high school graduates will be considered. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. As part of the Safe Environment Program, the Diocese of Venice requires that all employees and those volunteers who work with children and/or vulnerable adults be fingerprinted and complete online training in Safe Environment prior to beginning employment or volunteering. 2025 Emerald Ball dazzles

The 41st Annual Emerald Ball was a great success! Held on March 26, 2025, at the Ritz Carlton Tiburon in Naples, the elegant evening’s proceeds will go to support the many programs of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., in Collier County.

The theme for the evening was “Pilgrims of Hope” – the message of Pope Francis for the Jubilee Year 2025. The fashionable crowd was dressed in elegant eveningwear and the Ball included fine dining, lots of dancing, upbeat music, and a spirited live auction with the “Gift from the Heart” bringing in many enthusiastic bidders.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane offered the opening invocation and presented the James A. McTague Humanitarian Award to Dominick and Rita Cavuoto.

The Cavuoto’s are active at St. Agnes Parish in Naples, and were previously active at St. John the Evangelist Parish. The couple were long-time co-chairs of the Emerald Ball. Rita has been active in her support of Catholic Charities since 2010, and has served on the Catholic Charities Board of Directors since 2016, where she is the current Chair. Dominick is on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida, Inc. They are also a Knight and Dame of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, where Dominick serves as the Section President.

Peggy Rodriguez, District Director, introduced a promotional video which presented the stories of two families which have been directly helped by the support of Catholic Charities. Barbara L. Siniscalchi served as chair of the Emerald Ball Committee with the support of many co-chairs.

Programs supported by the Emerald Ball include the Judy Sullivan Family Resources Center, Family Counseling Center, Golden Gate Senior Center, and Guadalupe Social Services, each offering a variety of targeted outreaches to help those in need in Collier County.

Venetian Ball supports Catholic Charities in Lee, Glades and Hendry counties

The programs of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., in Lee, Glades, and Hendry counties received tremendous support during the annual Venetian Ball on March 22, 2025, at St. Leo the Great Parish Hall in Bonita Springs.

“Growing Stronger Together” was the theme of the Venetian Ball, which served as an opportunity for participants to come together to partner with Catholic Charities as it steadfastly serves the needs of families and individuals throughout the area, including those who continue to recover from Hurricane Ian (2022).

Bishop Frank J. Dewane praised the benefactors of Catholic Charities for their concern for the work of Catholic Charities, adding that he was confident their support will continue to assist people in need.

“I thank you,” Bishop Dewane said. “We have to understand that what Catholic Charities does each day is to help our neighbors, our brothers and sisters in Christ. We must continue to look toward what more we can do, and it is through support from an evening like this that makes what we do possible.”

The resilience of the region from overcoming the devastation of Hurricane Ian, economic hardships and more in the past few years has been inspirational, said Alex Olivares, Catholic Charities Region II Director.

“I am so encouraged by the spirit of giving and helping in the community,” Olivares said. “For us to do what we do each day, your support is more important now than it has ever been.”

The Frank K. Galeana Humanitarian Award recognized Pamela “Pam” Bratton, a longtime committee member of the Venetian Ball, and supporter of Catholic Charities programs in Lee County. Bratton was pivotal in acquiring transitional housing for victims of human trafficking, as well as helping to find adequate space for the Long Term Recovery Group, the program which assists those impacted by Hurricane Ian. Olivares added that without Bratton, the most recent Venetian Balls would not have been possible.

“Her caring heart, her support, and her spirit of collaboration have made a difference in the lives of countless individuals and families in our region,” Olivares said.

The evening included fine dining, silent and live auctions and a “Gift of the Heart” appeal. The emcee was Lois Thome, WINK News anchor and lector at Resurrection of Our Lord Parish in Fort Myers. Guests danced to the music of the Riverboat Jazz Band.

Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Sarasota

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota on March 13, 2025. This was the latest in a series of Masses Bishop Dewane celebrates throughout the Lenten Season at Diocese of Venice Catholic Schools. Following the Mass, the Bishop spoke to the eighth graders, urging them to finish the Lenten Season strong as they strive to grow closer to the Lord. The Bishop also encouraged the students to continue their education at nearby Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. The eighth graders were also allowed to ask the Bishop any question before a group photo was taken.

Verot soccer player earns high honor

Caroline Pelkofski, a senior soccer player at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers was named the Florida Dairy Farmers – Girls Soccer FHSAA Class 3A Player of the Year! This season, Caroline scored 20 goals and added 22 assists in leading her squad to a 15-3-1 record and a Region 3A-3 Final. She is now eligible for the athlete-of-the-year award. She will continue playing soccer at the University of South Florida. Congratulations Caroline!

Students in Naples participate in St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Ann Catholic School students showed off their Irish pride when they participated in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Naples on March 15, 2025. Faculty, families and students came together to celebrate with smiles, spirit, and lots of Irish pride.

HOPE Gala a huge success

The inaugural HOPE Gala at St. William Parish in Naples was a huge success on March 8, 2025. The Gala raised funds for the HOPE (Homeless Outreach Program for Empowerment) outreach of St. William Parish. The program is dedicated to helping the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Naples. Through partnerships with Catholic Charities and other local organizations, the program provides essential resources such as food, clothing, casework support, and pathways to better life, ensuring that those in need receive both immediate relief and long-term assistance.

Verot Regency Garden Gala wows

An unforgettable night took place on March 15, 2025, at the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Regency Garden Gala which took place in Bonita Springs. It was a beautiful evening filled with elegance, joy, and Viking spirit. Bishop Frank J. Dewane offered a prayer before the meal and praised the community for helping to make Bishop Verot a shining example of Catholic Education in Lee County.

Catholic Community Foundation Announces Catholic Charities Legacy Fund

A new Legacy Fund supporting the work of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., is now available at the Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida (CCF) and was established with the funds previously held by the former Catholic Charities Foundation.

The new CCF “Catholic Charities Legacy Fund” exclusively supports the operational and capital expenses of Catholic Charities, thus helping it fulfill its mission of supporting those in need within the Diocese of Venice in Florida. Additionally, several new donor-restricted funds have been established within the CCF to support specific Catholic Charities programs, aligning with the original intentions of the donors when they created these funds with the Catholic Charities Foundation.

“The Catholic Community Foundation provides the most efficient way to honor and execute the intentions of donors who wish to support Catholic Charities via a Legacy Fund,” said Bishop Frank J. Dewane. “CCF brings extensive experience, best-in-class systems, and a robust framework for managing complex charitable giving.”

The new Catholic Charities Legacy Fund is building a future where Catholic Charities will continue to be a beacon of hope and service, Bishop Dewane added.

“This new fund reflects a commitment to preserving the Catholic faith, serving the most vulnerable, and ensuring that the charitable legacies of donors make a lasting difference,” Bishop Dewane said.

Michael Morse, Executive Director of CCF, said that through the new CCF fund, donors to the former Catholic Charities Foundation gain access to proven best practices in administering endowments, handling bequests, and stewarding donor-restricted funds.

“Donors can feel confident that every gift is managed prudently, is guided by Catholic values, and aligns with donor intentions, thus maximizing its impact on those served by Catholic Charities,” Morse said.

Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Port Charlotte

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Lenten Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on March 7, 2025, the First Friday of Lent. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to make an extra effort to live the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, almsgiving – to the best of their ability. The Bishop also reminded the students to increase their prayers during Lent so as to help them grow closer to the Lord.

Neumann wrestler wins state title

Lincoln Sledzianowski, a 132-pound wrestler at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, won the gold medal in his weight class at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, March 8, 2025. Two of his teammates also medaled. Benito Barnhart took silver in the 106-pound class, while Xavier Barnhart took the bronze in the 175-pound class. Well done to all of the wrestlers!

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal leaders meet Bishop

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocese of Venice Coordinator Maynor Ramirez and Deputy Coordinator Margarito Ronquillo met Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 3, 2025, at the Catholic Center in Venice. During the meeting, the pair presented the calendar of events and projects for this year 2025. Also present for the meeting was Jose Soto, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada and former Diocesan coordinator. Bishop Dewane gave his blessing at the events and prayed for the success of the Regional Congress to be held in the Diocese in the fall.

The third Diocese of Venice Eucharistic Conference will take place Saturday, March 29, at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center in Punta Gorda. Our Mother’s House event shows enthusiastic support for moms and their young children

People of all ages came out to support Our Mother’s House, a program of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., Feb. 27, 2025, at its annual wine tasting fundraiser at the Venice Community Center in Venice.

Our Mother’s House provides transitional housing, education and support to single mothers and their preschool-age children, the only such program in the area. Often, these women have nowhere else to turn, and the program offers not only a temporary solution but a path forward.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane was the honored guest of the evening and provided brief remarks and a blessing before dinner.

“The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops initiated a program called ‘Walking with Moms in Need,’ emphasizing the need to accompany pregnant women, especially those facing difficult circumstances, and their children,” Bishop Dewane said. “However the Diocese of Venice has been walking with moms in need since at least 1987, when Our Mother’s House was born. We’re doing it, we’ve been doing it, and we’re going to keep doing it, with your support.”

Aniko Barna-Roche, Our Mother’s House Program Manager, was delighted at the turn out, and the support of not only those present but also the many local merchants who donated generously to the evening’s auctions. Barna-Roche introduced Christina, a resident of Our Mother’s House, who spoke briefly thanking everyone for their support, and sharing that although she never thought she would end up in such a difficult situation, without Our Mother’s House she does not think she could have made it through.

“I feel compelled to share my experience with you,” Christina said. “After a series of unfortunate events spanning more than 20 years of my life, I almost gave up. I cried out to the Lord for help, and it came, in the form of a Christmas miracle. My two-year-old son and I moved into Our Mother’s House,” Christina said. “Since becoming residents here my son and I have felt nothing but support; we are surrounded by love. It has been a time of growth, perseverance, and hope. Thank you for your support, and for showing us a path forward.”

The evening, billed as a wine tasting, was that and much more. There were wine tastings as well as dinner, dancing, games, raffles, and live and silent auctions, with dozens of items donated by local merchants. At the end of the evening a Gift-From-the-Heart auction included the announcement of two anonymous matching gift offers, with the first anonymous donor offering to match all gifts up to $20,000 and the second offering to match all gifts up to $10,000. Both challenges were met on the spot and even exceeded.

“Our Holy Father has declared this a Jubilee Year, a Year of Hope,” said Bishop Dewane. “Each one of you are here this evening to support Our Mother’s House is supporting that effort of hope in the lives of these mothers, and their children. Thank you.”

Our Mother’s House of Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice, Inc., has provided transitional housing to homeless mothers and their children since 1987. The 2- year transitional living program for single mothers and their preschool-age children offers a safe and secure environment for mothers to achieve increased self-sufficiency through education, vocational training, and personal growth. Catholic Center celebrates Mardis Gras

The staff of the Diocese of Venice Catholic Center took time out to celebrate Mardis Gras on Fat Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in Venice. Bishop Frank J. Dewane led everyone in prayer and there were sweet treats for everyone in this tradition of indulgence ahead of the Lenten Season.

Students work on campus beautification project

St. Joseph Catholic School students in Bradenton who are in aftercare took part in a campus beautification project since late February 2025. They have been potting flowers and adding them to special spots throughout the campus. They are also watering these new additions to keep them looking great for the school community.

Religion students learn the parts of Mass

Seventh-grade students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers have been working hard in their religion class to learn the four parts of the Mass (Introductory Rites, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and Concluding Rites). On March 4, 2025, students put what they learned to the test by playing a review game. They then worked in teams to put the steps of Mass in the correct order on a board as fast as they could. One team took home the win in just under 35 seconds!

Science in action

Chemistry students at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers often take a hands-on approach to learning. On Feb. 24, 2025, the students learned how to synthesize an ionic compound. They expertly burned magnesium ribbon in a crucible, creating magnesium oxide and magnesium nitride right before their eyes. Following the synthesis, they tested the validity of their compounds by dissolving the product and examining its conductivity. This practical experiment not only demonstrated key chemical reactions, but also provided valuable insights into the properties of ionic compounds. This is just one example of the well-rounded education students receive in STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, art, and math) based curriculum.

Gummy Bears sacrificed for science

Pre-kindergarten students at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota recently sacrificed a few Gummy Bears for the sake of science. On March 3, 2025, the engrossed students worked on developing their observation skills, comparing and contrasting, and learning to make predictions about what will happen when Gummy Bears are put in different liquids, such as water. They also learned about patience as they waited to see the changes over time.

Two seminarians receive Ministry of Acolyte

Diocese of Venice Seminarians Alexander J. Baugh and Terry P. Gastauer, studying for the priesthood at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary, Weston, Massachusetts, were among seven men conferred to the Ministry of Acolyte on February 19, 2025. Most Reverend Timothy P. Broglio, J.C.D, Archbishop for the Military Services, USA and current President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), presided over the Rite. As an Acolyte, the men’s primary role will be assisting the Deacon and Priest during Mass, with a focus on ensuring the altar is prepared. They may serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion at Mass and bring Holy Eucharist to the sick. They will also participate in various tasks as needed, while aiding the Priest and Deacon during liturgical celebrations. Congratulations Seminarians Baugh and Gastauer!

Boots & Bandanas rustles up support for Catholic Charities

It was a night under the stars for the always fun Boots & Bandanas to support the programs of Catholic Charities in DeSoto County, on Feb. 22, 2025, at The Barn at Thousand Pines Ranch, Venice. This western-themed evening included plenty of cowboy hats, boots and lots of bandanas. The Catholic Charities programs in DeSoto County include Casa San Juan Bosco farmworker housing, St. John Paul II Villas senior housing, a food pantry, and much more. There were live and silent auctions and toe-tapping country and western music that brought many to the dance floor.

School Gala has Derby theme

The annual St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School Gala had a Kentucky Derby theme on Feb. 22, 2025, with ladies wearing their most elegant hats, and live horses present to greet the participants at the Heritage Bay Golf and Country Club in Naples. Bishop Frank J. Dewane provided the invocation and took time to praise the school for its impact on the region, noting how the faculty and staff have overcome many obstacles to ensure its students and their families become witnesses for Christ in the community.

Four Verot students named National Merit School finalists

Andrew Marino, Samantha Mitchell, Sophia Smith, and Tyler Wyman, seniors at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers have been named Finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The honor places the four among the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors. As National Merit Finalists, each has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million. The process to become a Finalist included submitting a detailed application with information about academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, as well as honors and awards received.

Kindergarteners learn about cardiology in a fun way

Teachers at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota brought to life cardiology and anatomy in a fun way for kindergarten students on Feb. 21, 2025. The students performed a variety of “procedures” and “operations” focusing on colors, syllables, adding and spelling. They did this while wearing ID badges, hair nets and hospital scrubs and getting their hands dirty by handling colored noodles. Everyone had fun and learned so much.

Knight’s Silver Rose stops in Naples

Each year, from late February through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along eight routes from the U.S. and Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners, and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe. On Feb. 21, 2025, St. Ann Parish in Naples was the first stop the Silver Rose made along Route 5. Students from St. Ann Catholic School were the first to learn about the Silver Rose which was put on temporary display in the Parish Church. The Silver Rose will continue through Florida and then on to Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and finally Mexico.
