Bishop celebrates Mass in Bradenton

Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., celebrated Mass at Ss. Peter and Paul the Apostles Parish, Bradenton, Oct. 18, 2026. The Mass was a follow-up to a visit in August which was part of Bishop Emilio’s tour of parishes at the beginning of his episcopy. The bishop was presented with an icon featuring Ss. Peter and Paul. The Mass was followed by a parish celebration in the hall.

Parish celebrates life of St. Carlo Acutis

St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Cape Coral, celebrated the feast of St. Carlo Acutis Oct. 12, 2026, with a special day centered on the Holy Eucharist, prayer, and the communion of saints. The celebration included Holy Mass, the blessing of a new St. Carlo Acutis statue, and the veneration of first-class relics of St. Carlo Acutis and other beloved saints. Parishioners gathered throughout the day for Eucharistic Adoration, the Holy Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Holy Hours, concluding with a Family Holy Hour and Benediction. May the example of St. Carlo Acutis inspire all to deepen their love for Jesus in the Eucharist and to pursue holiness in their daily lives.

2026 Diocesan Eucharistic Rosary Congress concludes

The annual Diocese of Venice Eucharistic Rosary Congress, Oct. 2-10, 2026, reached thousands across the region with each parish participating. Many parishes participated for a full 24 hours, while some took part for at least a half-day. Each opened with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and included Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and the hourly praying of the Rosary. Epiphany Cathedral, Venice, included a Eucharistic Procession. Many also offered Confession times for the faithful. Begun in 2021, the purpose of the Congress is for the glory of God and the salvation of souls.

Bishop visits two more Catholic schools

Bishop Emilio Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., celebrated Mass for and visited St. Catherine Catholic School, Sebring, Oct. 9, 2026, and at St. Joseph Catholic School, Bradenton, Oct. 21, 2026. In Sebring, Bishop Emilio had brunch with members of the school board and supporters of the school. Principal Stephen Cullipher then gave Bishop Emilio a tour of the two main classroom buildings while sharing how the school has grown since opening in 2008 as the only Catholic school in the Eastern Deanery. In Bradenton, Principal Dr. Tom Noonan directed the bishop on a tour of the school offering a history of the only Catholic school in Manatee County. During both visits, Bishop Emilio was greeted enthusiastically by the students who were fascinated by the brown Capuchin habit he wears.

40 Days for Life continues

The 40 Days for Life prayer vigil to end abortion which continues through Nov. 1, brings together people of faith from all walks of life who share a commitment to protecting human life through peaceful prayer and public witness. Fall 40 Days for Life prayer vigil hours include: Fort Myers: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, 6418 Commerce Park Drive; Sarasota: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., 7-days-a-week, at 736 Central Ave.; Naples: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, at 1425 Creech Road. A Jericho Walk will take place at 4 p.m., Nov. 1, in Sarasota; and a closing rally is scheduled for 6 p.m., Nov. 1, in Fort Myers.

Weekend retreat for bereaved parents

A “Retreat for Grieving Parents: Walking with Jesus,” is coming to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, Venice, Oct. 30 – Nov. 1, 2026. This Catholic faith-based retreat offers grieving parents a space of peace, comfort, and hope, where they can also find support within a community that shares their journey. Breakfast with the saints

St. William Parish, 750 Seagate Drive, Naples, is hosting a Breakfast with the Saints, following the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses, Nov. 1, 2026, in honor of All Saints Day. In addition to the pancake breakfast, the parish youth group will offer a presentation on various saints, and there will also be saint information booths, as well as saint cards for attendees. Holiday Bereavement Outreach Retreats

Kristallnacht commemoration of Holocaust Nov. 8

Something new is coming to OLPH this Christmas!

Volunteers needed for prison outreach

Join the team of diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Two Cardinal Mooney seniors named National Merit semifinalists

Two Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School seniors, Jack Fiskness and Jolie Pastorick, have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. This prestigious recognition for the Sarasota students places them among some of the highest-achieving students in the nation and reflects their exceptional academic dedication and hard work. Good job Jack and Jolie!

Theology on Tap has packed house

There was a packed house as young adults from parishes across the area gathered at Oak and Stone in Sarasota for Theology on Tap, Sept. 17, 2026, and it wasa packed house. The speaker, Dr. Alan Van Wart of Ave Maria University, described the context in which St. Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council. He reminded all how Vatican II called the Church to renew Her evangelizing mission by placing Christ back at the center of everything. The room was full, the discussion was engaging, and the Q&A showed just how thoughtful and invested our young adults are. It was a night marked by respect, camaraderie, and shared joy. Mass of Remembrance for Hurricane Ian, Sept. 28

Bishop Emilio E. Biosca, O.F.M. Cap., will be celebrating a Mass of Remembrance at 9 a.m., Sept. 28, 2026, on the grounds of the Church of the Ascension, 6025 Estero Blvd., Fort Myers Beach. Venerate first-class relics of St. Carlo Acutis and his friends and mentors (St. Maria Goretti, St. Dominic Savio, St. Therese Lisieux of the Little Flower and St. Ignatius of Loyola), on his feast day, Oct. 12, 2026, 9 a.m.-6:45 p.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, 1922 S.W. 20th Ave., Cape Coral. St. Carlo Acutis was an Italian teenager who became the first millennial saint best known for his devotion to the Holy Eucharist and his use of digital media to promote Catholic devotion including documenting Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparitions. Day includes 9 a.m. Mass with the Rite of Anointing, 9:45 exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a blessing of the new St. Carlo Acutis statue, Litany of the Saints and Veneration of the Relics, Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. From 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., each holy hour will be introduced with a brief story about the life of St. Carlo Acutis.

Ignatian Preached Retreat

Regional Spanish-language Charismatic conference brings 1,000 closer to Christ

About 1,000 gathered from across the region for the Spanish-language Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference on Sept. 20-21, 2025, at Fort Myers High School in Fort Myers.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Mass for the group on the morning on Sept. 21. He told the conference participants how grateful he was for all that they do in support of the Diocese of Venice throughout the region.

Bishop Dewane encouraged the Charismatic Renewal members to gain as much as they could from the Conference as they grow closer to the Lord in their lives. “Listen to the Holy Spirit in your lives. Let the Holy Spirit be the impetus behind what we you do, and how you do it, and may the Lord bless you in these efforts.”

Speaking about Catholic Social Teachings, Bishop Dewane said that the power of man comes from God, but that all power must be used for the dignity of the person, because everyone is made in the image and likeness of God.

“We have to live our life that way,” Bishop Dewane continued. “The Holy Spirit is ever watchful and prompts us to reach out, to react, to do something to help the other.”

Expressing support for the community, Bishop Dewane spoke about the need to continue to have faith in the Lord in a world full of uncertainty as they continue to “live out the Charism you have been given. Be that leaven in society that rises and speaks out for the Lord, for justice, and for what needs to be said within the community. Trust the Holy Spirit to guide you and bless you in this effort.”

The conference included a variety of guest speakers, including Father Wilner Durosier, C.S., Administrator of St. Michael Parish in Wauchula. There was also dynamic music, break-out sessions, Eucharistic Adoration, as well as the praying of the Holy Rosary.

In addition to groups representing 26 Diocese of Venice Parishes, participants in the conference included faithful from the Archdiocese of Miami, as well as the Dioceses of St. Petersburg and Orlando.

Also present was Jose Soto, National Coordinator for the Spanish Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada, who is from Jesus the Worker Parish in Fort Myers.

2025 Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference inspires

The annual Diocese of Venice English-Speaking Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference brought together about 200 from across the region to be renewed in the Holy Spirit Feb. 7-8, 2025, at St. Charles Borromeo Parish in Port Charlotte.

The theme of the Conference was “Spirit Called,” with the quote “For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the Children of God,” Romans 8:14, serving as the inspiration for the participants as they were enlightened by teaching, worship, music and fellowship.

The featured speaker at the Conference was Most Rev. Peter L. Smith, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon, who in 2024 was appointed as the ecclesiastical assistant of CHARIS, the Catholic Charismatic Renewal International Service. CHARIS is intended to share with all in the Church the baptism in the Holy Spirit, while promoting Christian unity and engaging in service to the poor.

Bishop Smith first spoke about the parable of the sowing of the seeds where Jesus uses the example of throwing the seeds on fertile ground, as well as on rocks and in the weeds where it has almost no chance of growing. While this was seen by the Jewish farmers of the day as an insane waste of precious seeds, Jesus used this story to explain the extravagant love God has for each of us.

“The sower is the Father, sowing the word of Christ into our lives,” Bishop Smith said. “And God sows that with incredible extravagance. God will sow that seed upon us all, even those who have hard parts, where there is almost no chance of that seed sprouting. He will do that in extravagance at the possibility, just the possibility, of one of those seeds taking root. That is God’s love for you and for me.”

Bishop Smith concluded by reflecting upon the Gospel reading about the Road to Emaus, where Christ accompanies two of the disciples, who don’t recognize that He is the Resurrected Lord, as they walk along the road as a great example of how the Lord accompanies us.

“The Lord walks with us through our lives,” Bishop Smith concluded. “He engages us; brings us His truth; takes our eyes off ourselves; focuses our eyes on Him. He does what He can to get our hearts burning again with hope. In response, we must act, like the disciples, and go back and rejoin the community of faith.”

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Mass for the Conference on Feb. 8, with Bishop Smith concelebrating and serving as the homilist. Bishop Dewane greeted the visiting Bishop and encouraged the Charismatic Renewal members to gain as much as they could from the Conference as they grow closer to the Lord in their lives.

There were several talks and break-out sessions. Father Ananda Anki Reddy, Spiritual Advisor to the Diocesan English Catholic Charismatic Renewal and Parochial Vicar at St. Andrew Parish, and Father Daniel Scanlan, Parochial Vicar of St. Thomas More Parish in Sarasota, both offered presentations.

“We were so blessed to have the Holy Spirit with us today,” one participant from Cape Coral said. “Having Bishop Smith here elevated the grace we all received.”

The English Catholic Charismatic Renewal in the Diocese of Venice includes prayer groups at 15 different Parishes. Most prayer groups gather weekly for praise and worship. Youth make sandwiches for homeless

Middle schoolers who are part of the Our Lady of Light Parish religious education program in Fort Myers made more than 400 sandwiches during their Jan. 18, 2024, gathering. These sandwiches were donated for distribution by the Lee County Homeless Coalition. The simple act of making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches provided the youth a valuable lesson about giving back to the community, as we are all “Called to Serve” our brothers and sisters in Christ. Well done!

Fort Myers Knights have successful “Coats for Kids” drive

The Knights of Columbus Council 2596 at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Fort Myers conducted a “Coats for Kids” program by purchasing a number of jackets and hoodies for children in need. This was done to provide children with nice outerwear during the winter months to not only ward off the chill but to give them something new that they are happy to wear. On Jan. 22, 2024, the Knights were able to provide more than 120 new fleece-lined zip-up jackets for distribution with their partner, Child Care SWFL, a local non-profit that provides a myriad of support and educational services to families in need and at-risk children. Coats were supplied to Child Care’s five learning centers in Fort Myers, Lehigh Acres, and LaBelle. The Knights also presented Child Care with $500 to assist with their ongoing efforts.

Charismatic Conference inspires

When we give our lives to Jesus, with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit, we become more like Him.

This fundamental concept served as a guidepost for the participants in the 2023 Diocese of Venice English Catholic Charismatic Renewal two-day “For Such a Time as This” Spiritual Gifts Conference with a concert, June 2-3, 2023, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. The conference fell between the Solemnities of Pentecost (May 28) and the Most Holy Trinity (June 4).

English Charismatic Renewal groups from across the Diocese gathered to share in a day of uplifting talks, encouraging everyone to answer their personal call to holiness. Their goal was to establish, or reestablish, an immediacy of relationship with all three persons of the Holy Trinity, and through inner transformation, affect the whole of the person’s life.

The theme for the day “For Such a Time as This” comes from the writings of keynote speaker (author and musician) Tori Harris, whose book Holy Spirit 101 formed the structure of the conference. The conference offered a time of extraordinary praise and worship, healing prayer, and dynamic teaching. Everyone was encouraged to listen to the call of the Holy Spirit in their life and to share the joy and wonder with others.

The two-day event opened on June 2 in the Parish Hall with a free concert by Harris as she shared inspirational original songs mixed with traditional songs and stories to help the audience be moved by the fire of the Holy Spirit.

The mission of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, with faithfulness to the teachings of the Catholic Church, is to stir into flame the grace of Pentecost. This is accomplished by promoting knowledge of the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1831), Baptism in the Holy Spirit, and creating a deepening awareness of the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our daily lives.

Harris said we are each called by the Holy Spirit in different ways, but importantly we must be open to hearing the call in the first place, because we are invited for a special reason.

“The whole point of this (Charismatic Renewal) is to declare Christ’s messianic mission” Harris said. “The Scriptures say that the Messiah will be able to give sight to the blind, raise the dead, and heal the sick. The Messiah alone can do that. Because if you are doing that it is because of the Messiah; the power of the Holy Spirit lives within you. You become a sign of Christ’s messianic mission to the world.”

If a prayer is just for someone to be healed, Harris said that doesn’t go far enough.

“The prayer is for them to be saved. For them to know Jesus. So, boldly proclaim Jesus to anyone that you are praying for,” Harris stressed.

Father Claudio Stewart, Diocesan English Catholic Charismatic Renewal Spiritual Advisor and Administrator at St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish in Port Charlotte, led the group in prayer during the opening of the event.

Father Stewart said it is important for the faithful to realize that the saving power of Jesus can heal them physically and, more importantly, spiritually.

The conference in Venice offered a chance for Charismatics to recharge and refocus on their mission, explained Dr. John Gresham, President of the Diocesan English Catholic Charismatic Renewal.

Gresham said the Lord reveals the Glory of His Kingdom and longs for us to know His love which will cast out any fear we have in our heart. “God invites us to share in the anointing of Jesus to do the work of bringing the Kingdom of God to earth. The Holy Spirit brings us into that Communion as co-workers with God.”

Scouting religious awards presented

The Diocesan Scouting Religious Award Ceremony was held May 22, 2022, at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice. Catholic National and Diocesan Awards were presented to Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and American Heritage Girls as well as to adult leaders. Diocesan Scout Chaplain Father Lawton Lang, as well Scout Leaders Jim Fetterman and Bob Paquette, presented the awards. The ceremony followed a Mass in the Cathedral where they were also recognized.

Students artwork recognized

Congratulations to Blaire M., a first grader at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers, whose artwork now adorns the side of a Waste Pro recycling truck. Blaire won 1st Place in the Keep Lee County Beautiful and Waste Pro “Leave the Scene Clean” environmental art contest. The artwork included a caterpillar, flowers, trees, hearts and a butterfly with the words “Plant Trees.” The truck with Blaire’s artwork visited the school on May 19, 2022, for everyone to see.

Catholic Summer Camp Program

Totus Tuus (a Latin phrase meaning “totally yours”) is a summer Catholic youth camp program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. The weeklong program assists parents and parishes to evangelize and catechize youth by complementing the work they are already doing at the Parish and at home. This summer the program will be offered at eight parishes in the Diocese of Venice. The camp program is for grades 1-5 Monday to Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for grades 6-12 Monday to Thursday, from 7:30 p.m.to 9:45 p.m. Parishes hosting the program are as follows:

Our Lady of Fatima Rosary Rally

22^nd Annual Knights Liberty Ball

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 2542 is hosting the 22^nd Annual Liberty Ball, June 18, 2022, at the Our Lady of Light Parish Center, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers. Religious Freedom Week 2022

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is once again promoting the celebration of Religious Freedom Week beginning Wednesday, June 22 to Thursday, June 29. Each year the week encompasses the period between the Memorial of Saints Thomas More & John Fisher, through the Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul. The theme for this year is Life and Dignity for All. As we approach the Supreme Court decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, we are especially mindful of the debates around our country about abortion. Charismatic Conference inspires

When we give our lives to Jesus, with the help and guidance of the Holy Spirit, we become more like Him.

This fundamental concept served as a guidepost for the participants in the 2022 Diocese of Venice English Catholic Charismatic Renewal Conference which was held Jan. 15, at St. John XXIII Parish in Fort Myers.

The Conference brought together English Charismatic Renewal groups from across the Diocese to share in a day of uplifting talks, encouraging everyone to answer their personal call to holiness.

The theme for the day “Come, and You Will See,” comes from the Gospel of John (1:37-39). In the passage we learned that the disciples knew who Jesus was as a man and prophet, but they did not know the true Jesus, Son of God the Father. They decided to take the path to stay with the Lord.

This message is important, not just for Charismatics, but for all, said Bishop Frank J. Dewane, during a Mass at the conclusion of the Conference.

“They came to this Conference to listen to the Lord in their life, and to fill their hearts, minds and souls with the Holy Spirit and hear the call that the Holy Spirit has for them,” Bishop Dewane said. “We all need to listen to the charism, the call in our own life.”

Father Anthony Lukka, Diocesan English Catholic Charismatic Renewal Spiritual Advisor and Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Venice, led the group in prayer several times throughout the day.

Father Lukka repeatedly stressed the importance for the faithful to realize that the saving power of Jesus will heal them from pain and suffering, physically or spiritually.

“The only thing that is required of us is to ask Jesus to bring healing into our lives,” he said. “It is by His wounds; you have been healed. It was on the cross where Jesus suffered and shed His Precious Blood that we are all healed of our sins. That healing should permeate who you are in your life.”

Renee Marazon, President of the Diocesan English Catholic Charismatic Renewal, said that on a daily basis the Lord reveals the Glory of His Kingdom and longs for us to know His love which will cast out any fear we have in our heart. “Speak to Jesus; talk to Jesus, he wants you to be His best friend. Talk to Him and listen to His voice.”

Dr. John Gresham, recently retired Director of the Diocese of Venice Institute for Catholic Studies and Formation, spoke about the way we should be healed through all prayer and through the generosity and love of the Holy Spirit. God invites us to share in the anointing of Jesus to do the work of bringing the Kingdom of God to earth. The Holy Spirit brings us into that Communion as co-workers with God.”

Before Mass, the Conference concluded with a presentation from participants on the successful introduction of the Alpha Catholic Course at St. Katharine Drexel Parish in Cape Coral. This 12-week course is a way to reintroduce the faithful through group encounters and discussions is done at a smaller group level and is structured to help people feel comfortable talking about their faith and welcome in the Church beyond the pews on Sunday.

Marazon explained how the program started small and has grown exponentially and created a sense of community at the Parish that was lacking in the past.

One attendee said participating in the Alpha course was a spiritual gift where his faith in Jesus jumped. “We learn that God meets us where we are.”

English Catholic Charismatic Renewal celebrates Pentecost

Members of the Diocese of Venice Catholic English Catholic Charismatic Renewal (DVCCR) gathered on Pentecost Sunday to celebrate a Mass in honor of the Holy Spirit and the “Birthday of the Church.”

More than 120 participated in an afternoon of prayer, song and reflection at Sacred Heart Parish in Punta Gorda in the first in-person group gathering in more than a year, reuniting members of the 15 active English DVCCR prayer groups in the Diocese. The celebration culminated with Mass.

The significance of the English DVCCR gathering taking place on Pentecost was not lost on anyone. Pentecost marks the moment when the Holy Spirit filled the hearts of the apostles and sent them on their mission to evangelize to the world. This beginning, or “birthday” of the Church, is also the impetus for Charismatics, whose mission is to “stir into the flame the grace of Pentecost by promoting a personal relationship with Jesus.”

Spiritual Advisor Father Anthony Lukka led the group in prayer, including the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Inspirational music energized those gathered while several participants shared words of inspiration during the intervals.

English DVCCR President Renee Marazon expressed her joy about having old friends gathered together in prayer. The gathering served as a day of renewal as the different prayer groups work to reorganize as the world emerges from the Pandemic. The mission of the DVCCR is accomplished through prayer groups and spiritual growth experiences in meetings, retreats, days of renewal, workshops and conferences.

Mazaron said the leadership of the DVCCR met with Bishop Frank J. Dewane about its goals and plans. The Bishop agreed with the need to focus on building up the DVCCR prayer groups after the Pandemic.

To assist in this effort, it was announced that the Alpha Catholic Course is coming to the Diocese in October. This multi-week online course is an opportunity for participants to explore life and the Faith in a friendly, open and informal environment. Each talk looks at a different question about Christianity and is designed to facilitate discussion.

“The goal is to start a fire in the hearts of people after being locked up so long,” said Alice Keough, English DVCCR Secretary. “We are all about evangelization and building the Kingdom of God.”
