Totus Tuus summer program continues

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to grow in faith. The week-long program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first two weeks, the program has taken place at five Parishes, with the most recent at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, St. Paul parish in Arcadia, and Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria. Upcoming host Parishes include the following: St. Agnes Parish, Naples, San Pedro Parish, North Port, St. Michael Parish, Wauchula, and St. Leo the Great Parish, Bonita Springs (June 14-19); St. Katharine Drexel Parish, Cape Coral, and Sacred Heart Parish, Bradenton (June 21-26); St. James Parish, Lake Placid, St. Catherine Parish, Sebring, Our Lady of Grace Parish, Avon Park, and Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish, LaBelle (July 5-10); St. Joseph Parish, Bradenton, and Our Lady of Light Parish (Day Session)/ St. John XXIII Parish, Fort Myers (Evening Session) (July 12-17); Our Lady of the Angels Parish, Lakewood Ranch, and St. Jude Parish, Sarasota (July 19-24). Youth are welcome to attend any of the Totus Tuus camps, but registration is requested ahead of time. Parish hosts breakfast in the park for homeless in Naples

The St. William Parish Homeless Ministry hosted a “Breakfast in the Park” for homeless men and women at East Naples Park May 30, 2026. More than 20 were treated to a warm meal and handmade goodies from Sunshine Delites, as volunteers from St. William and nearby St. Peter the Apostle Parish helped prepare and serve the food. Cardinal Mooney grad qualifies for golf U.S. Open

Robbie Higgins, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School graduate from 2020, has qualified for the U.S. Open golf tournament June 18-21, 2026, in Shinnecock Hills, Pennsylvania. Higgins, from Sarasota, played in a U.S. Open qualifying tournament on June 8, at Hawks Ridge Golf Club in Ball Ground, Georgia, shooting a combined score of 133. He was one of five to qualify out of more than 40 golfers. Niko Gordic-Ronderos, age 14 and a Cardinal Mooney freshman, was the youngest golfer to try to qualify for a spot in the U.S. Open. Niko played at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens but failed to make the cut. He made it to the qualifying round by scoring well in a local qualifier a week earlier.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible series

Have you ever wanted to read the Bible but didn’t know where to start? St. Agnes Parish, 7775 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples, is hosting an “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible” series, 6:30 p.m., Wednesdays, from June 24 to Aug. 12, 2026. Bradenton food pantry seeks food for children on summer vacation

The St. Joseph Food Pantry, 2704 33rd Ave. W., Bradenton, is seeking food for children on summer vacation through the end of July. Food needed includes but is not limited to: fruit jelly in plastic containers, cereal, granola/breakfast bars, protein bars, raisins, shelf staple milk boxes, mac & cheese, canned vegetables, canned meat, canned tuna, spam, etc. Drop off times at the St. Joseph Food Pantry are from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., and bins are also available in the Parish office during regular daily hours. Theology on Tap June 18 in University Park

Calling all young adults! Join Catholic young people from across the Diocese for an evening of fellowship, faith and fun. Theology on Tap meets on the third Thursday of every month and is an opportunity for young adults in their 20’s and 30’s to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting. Catholic classical education Conference June 19-21 in Fort Myers

The 3rd annual AMICE Conference hosted by Ave Maria Catholic Academy of Ave Maria will take place June 19-21, 2026, at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers. The conference offers an excellent opportunity for teachers, staff, administrators and parents to learn more about classical education. This year’s theme “The Great Conversation: The contributions of the Great Books in a Catholic Classical Education,” will be presented by outstanding educators who have years of experience in the Classical Educational model. There will be keynote speakers and discussions as well as 12 breakout sessions. The AMICE conference is for all who are exploring or deepening their knowledge of Catholic classical education, particularly in the Diocese of Venice, to offer a bold response to the Church’s call for the renewal of Catholic education in the modern world. Summer educational series in Naples

St. William Parish, 750 Seagate Drive, Naples, is hosting a Summer Educational Series beginning at 1 p.m., June 24, 2026, in the Church Hall. The theme for June is “What You Should Know About Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias,” presented by Mark Beland, Co-Chair of the Collier County Dementia Care and Cure Initiative and Community Liaison of the Baker Senior Center. Topics to be covered include: gaining a better understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias; increasing awareness of behavioral symptoms; equip others to communicate effectively with people with dementia; discover local resources available to assist those with dementia, their families, and caregivers; and learn about the risk factors regarding dementia and how to manage them. Independence Day bike and golf cart parade to be held in Ave Maria

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 3862 of Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria is hosting its 10th annual “God Bless America: Independence Day Bike and Golf Cart Parade for our Nation’s 250th Birthday.” The opening ceremony will take place in the Piazza in front of Ave Maria Parish church at 10 a.m. (following 9 a.m. Mass), with the parade, led by fire trucks, immediately following. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, golf carts, skateboards, and strollers. The route is approximately 2 miles long, but a shorter route, around the church, is available for younger riders. Light refreshments, including birthday cake for the Nation, will be available at the conclusion of the parade.

The Year of St. Francis

Bishop Frank J. Dewane has designated St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Grove City to serve as a pilgrimage destination for the Diocese of Venice in the extraordinary Jubilee Year of St. Francis, honoring St. Francis of Assisi on the 800th anniversary of his death. All are encouraged to make a pilgrimage to the Parish during this Jubilee Year for a unique experience of encounter, prayer and renewal. The Church and its Poor Clare Adoration Chapel are open to welcome pilgrims every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and at other times by arrangement. Beware of text and email scams

It has been brought to the attention of the Diocese that parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. These messages often come from text/emails that look similar to official Diocesan/Parish/school numbers or accounts and often greet the recipient by name and have the priest’s, Bishop’s, or staff member’s name in the “From” line and/or closing signature of the message. The fake message often claims that the priest/Bishop/staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. THIS IS A SCAM!  It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc.  There is an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a text or email, please immediately contact the Diocesan/Parish/school directly.

Our Mother’s House, a transitional housing program for homeless mom’s with young children operated by Catholic Charities in Venice, is making an appeal for donated cleaning supplies and other items. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice for pastoral outreach, to distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Faith is Fun! 2026 Totus Tuus Summer Catechetical Camp begins

The Totus Tuus one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camps have begun with the first two Parishes hosting between May 31 and June 5, 2026. An additional 18 Parishes will host the weekly program through July 24.

Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours” – is a one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camp program, for students entering grades 1-12, and aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

The first host Parishes were St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish in Parrish and St. Finbarr Parish in Naples.

Totus Tuus missionaries, trained college-aged men and women, lead the program. The week-long camps are divided into two segments, with the day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, and an evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. They are also learning about the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary.

At St. Frances Xavier Cabrini, the young children started each day singing and dancing to “My Lighthouse.” This inspirational song puts a focus on the importance of having the Lord at the center of their lives and sets the tone for the faith-filled day. The young campers receive a different colored string each day. That string represents a key word for the day. Eventually, the group will put all they learned together and go to Mass.

In the evenings, the older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditation, prayer and fellowship. The missionaries also shared their own spiritual journey with the teens. The final night (Thursday) includes participation in Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane encouraged the pilot program be brought to the Diocese in 2022 to great success, with expansions from eight to 20 Parish for 2026.

Parish marks 20 years

St. Jude Parish in Sarasota celebrated its 20th anniversary with a Mass and reception on May 28, 2026. The Parish was established as a Mission of St. Martha Parish in 2003, and a building campaign resulted in the construction of the Blessed Carlos Manuel Hispanic-American Center multipurpose building which service as a sanctuary for Masses, classrooms for religious instruction, and conference room and offices which were blessed and dedicated on May 28, 2006. Father Celstino Gutierrez, the founding Pastor, led the Parish through tremendous growth. Now there are more than 4,000 registered families. The Parish hosts a large Hispanic Festival each fall and has its own food pantry and a large religious education program. Upon Father Gutierrez’s retirement in 2024, Father Jiobani Batista was appointed Pastor. During the Mass, symbols of the Parish history were brought forward and included a bouquet of flags representing the multicultural Parish. A capital campaign is taking place to raise funds for a permanent Parish church.

Catholic Medical Association Board meets with Bishop

Board members of the Catholic Medical Association of Southwest Florida gathered for a meeting with Bishop Frank J. Dewane on June 1, 2026, at the Catholic Center in Venice. Members discussed a variety of issues. Dr. Joseph Guernsey and other Board members also wished Bishop Dewane well in his coming retirement.

CCW members tour Our Mother’s House

Members of the Venice Diocesan Council of Catholic Women toured Our Mother’s House on May 27, 2026, as part of the Walking with Moms in Need program. Our Mother’s House of Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice, Inc. provides transitional housing to single mothers and their preschool-age children in a safe and secure environment to achieve increased self-sufficiency through education, vocational training, and personal growth. The tour helped raise awareness about this important program.

Parish group participates in opening of National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Teen pilgrims from St. Patrick Parish in Sarasota traveled on May 24, 2026, to St. Augustine to join the beginning of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage for the 250th Anniversary of the United States, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The pilgrims from St. Patrick’s, among two groups from the Diocese of Venice, attended the opening Mass at the location of the First Mass on American soil in 1565. The pilgrims then watched a performance group reenact the story of many priests and laypeople who died for their faith as Martyrs in the 1700s in La Florida. The day ended with a Eucharistic Procession, Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, through the streets of St. Augustine to the Cathedral. The Eucharistic Pilgrims will travel through all 13 colonies in the next six weeks, concluding in Philadelphia on 4th of July where the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago in 1776.

Memorial Garden blessed and dedicated in Sarasota

Hundreds of the faithful at St. Thomas More Parish in Sarasota gathered for the blessing and dedication of a renovated memorial garden and new prayer garden on May 27, 2026, following the 8 a.m. daily Mass.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane told the faithful that it is important to bless and dedicate such sacred spaces and to be “conscious of those who came before us, as they paved the way and give us strength that prepares the way for all of us to have a future encounter with Jesus Christ.”

Bishop Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass prior to the blessing and dedication. At the conclusion of the Mass, Bishop Dewane, led everyone into the renovated Mary’s Memorial Garden, which is in a space adjacent to the Parish church. The new Gethsemane Prayer Garden was built in its own space to the north of Mary’s Memorial Garden.

Father Nick Thompson, St. Thomas More Administrator, said he was grateful to the parishioners for having such a strong spiritual connection to Mary’s Memorial Garden, and the openness to dedicate new space was a blessing.

“St. Thomas More’s Parish family is an extraordinary example of a community dedicated to its mission of keeping faith, love and ministry alive,” Father Thompson said. Father also credited the generosity of parishioners Al Pezzillo, Arthur and Dolores Holliday and Al Ferrigno.

Mary’s Memorial Garden, established in 1989 by the Parish’s first Pastor, Father Gene Ryan, was inspired by details recorded in the Gospel of John, has since become the final resting place for more than 600 individuals remembered in peace amid the garden’s beauty and honored by plaques along a garden wall. The garden has undergone a transformative renewal. There is now a fountain along one wall, and a beautiful mosaic, created by Mila Apperlo, which depicts the Risen Christ. The garden was also repainted, turf was installed to protect against wind and rain, and new plantings were added to enhance the space.

The Gethsemane Prayer Garden is a serene space inviting meditation on the Passion of Christ. It’s physical placement beside Mary’s Memorial Garden underscores the symbolic connection between Mary and Jesus. Fourteen Stations of the Cross, each containing an Italian hand-painted illustration encased within a wooden frame were crafted by parishioners and woodworker Al Ferrigno. While the gardens are accessible from the church, there is also access to the spaces from the parking lot.

Parish group participates in opening of National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Pilgrims from St. Michael Parish in Wauchula traveled on May 24, 2026, to St. Augustine to join the beginning of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage for the 250th Anniversary of the United States, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The pilgrims attended the opening Mass at the location of the First Mass on American soil in 1565. A group later reenacted the story of many priests and laypeople who died for their faith as Martyrs in the 1700s in La Florida. The day ended with a Eucharistic Procession, Jesus truly present in the Blessed Sacrament, through the streets of St. Augustine to the Cathedral. The Eucharistic Pilgrims will travel through all 13 colonies in the next six weeks, concluding in Philadelphia on 4th of July where the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago in 1776.

Women religious from St. John Neumann reunite

The weekend of May 22-25, 2026, Salesian Sisters from across the country gathered in New Jersey to meet with Sister Ruth del Pilar Mora, FMA, a prominent leader and the General Councilor for the Missions of the Daughters of Mary, Help of Christians. Among those in attendance were several beloved St. John Neumann Catholic High School Alumni Sisters who faithfully served at St. John Neumann during the past 15 years. It was a joyful moment as they reunited for a special photo, reconnecting with one another and reflecting on the many lives they have touched through their ministry at Neumann. Thank you, Sisters, for your service, faith, and the love you continue to share with the Neumann family!

BEWARE OF TEXT AND EMAIL SCAMS

It has been brought to the attention of the Diocese that parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. These messages often come from text/emails that look similar to official Diocesan/Parish/school numbers or accounts and often greet the recipient by name and have the priest’s, Bishop’s, or staff member’s name in the “From” line and/or closing signature of the message. The fake message often claims that the priest/Bishop/staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. THIS IS A SCAM!  It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc.  There is an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a text or email, please immediately contact the Diocesan/Parish/school directly!

Cathedral’s new church bells blessed

To the cheers of the faithful, Bishop Frank J. Dewane presided over the Blessing of the Bells at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice on May 16, 2026.

Bishop Dewane was joined by the clergy and more than 500 of the faithful of Epiphany Cathedral and the Diocese of Venice for the Blessing of the Bells that will be installed as part of the reconstruction of the Cathedral.

The Mayor of Venice, the Honorable Nick Pachota, was also present for this joyous occasion, as well as Brian Baker, President of Baker Liturgical Art. Baker Liturgical Art, a leading nationwide company dedicated to liturgical design, restoration and renovation, was commissioned by Bishop Dewane to complete a major restoration and renovation of Epiphany Cathedral, including the creation of a 75-foot bell tower and four custom cast bronze church bells.

The bells are of particular significance, as they represent more than simply architectural additions; they are living instruments of praise, inviting hearts to prayer and lifting the soul toward heaven.

“The unmistakable peal of church bells calls all to the celebration of the liturgy and to prayer,” Bishop Dewane said. “Bells alert us to important events in the life of the Church and the community: Mass, prayer, weddings, funerals. This is a historic moment not only for Epiphany’s Cathedral’s parishioners, but for the entire Diocese, as it marks a significant milestone in the renovation and rejuvenation of the Cathedral of the Diocese of Venice.”

In addition to blessing the bells with holy water, Bishop Dewane also chimed the largest bell with a hammer, the beautiful sound reverberating through the delighted crowd.

For centuries tradition has called for church bells to be not only blessed but also named, as they represent “the voice of God,” calling people to worship. Alternatively, it has been said that church bells represent the voice of the faithful, calling out to God. Naming bells can be traced back to the year 968, when Pope John XIII dedicated a bell to St. John the Baptist.

“Epiphany Cathedral’s new bells have been named in recognition of the Catholic Solemnity of The Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, marking the revelation of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of the world,” explained Msgr. Patrick Dubois, Rector of Epiphany Cathedral. “The four bells are named after the Magi, or Wise Men, who visited Jesus at His birth, as well as after the Star that led the Magi to Jesus. Hence the bells will be called Melchior, Gaspar, Balthazar and The Star of Bethlehem.”

The new church bells are made of cast bronze and together weigh 3,658 lbs. They were crafted by Marinelli Pontifical Bell Foundry of Agnone, Italy, the oldest bell foundry in the world, now in its 27th generation as a family-run business. The Marinelli bells are well-known for their elegant form and distinctive, resonant sound, and are richly decorated with custom inscriptions and artistic reliefs, including the Diocese of Venice Crest. They will be installed in a new 75-foot bell tower at Epiphany Cathedral later this summer.

For many this blessing of the bells showed exciting forward progress in the ongoing reconstruction of Epiphany Cathedral. One woman in attendance at the special ceremony exclaimed that the blessing of the bells was an important milestone for the project which has been in progress for two years. “What a beautiful sound to hear that bell ring. This is very exciting. Next will be the dedication of the new Cathedral. I cannot wait.”

The renovation and reconstruction of Epiphany Cathedral began in June 2024, and work is expected to be completed by Thanksgiving this year. Among the major new aspects of the Cathedral will be a marble reredos (altarpiece) with a large-scale mosaic of the Epiphany, and new liturgical appointments including altar, ambo, throne, cathedra, baptismal font, stained glass windows, mosaic stations of the cross, new pews, and more. In addition, a statue of the pieta will be added adjacent to the Memorial Garden, which will remain undisturbed.

Following the blessing, most of those present took the opportunity to join a special tour of the inside of the Cathedral construction site, led by Msgr. Dubois. Many were awed by the new vaulted ceiling and the Italian marble that has been installed on the altar and were encouraged to see how much progress has already been made, all eager for the day the work is completed. Since the reconstruction began, Mass has been held in the Parish Hall, the original Epiphany Parish church.

2026 May Crownings honor Mary

Historically, May is a month dedicated by the Catholic Church to Mary, the Mother of God. As is well known, Mary plays an important and irreplaceable role in the spiritual life of the Church.

To honor the role the Blessed Virgin plays in the life of the Church, many Parishes and Catholic schools in the Diocese have May Crowning ceremonies during which a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary is adorned with a crown of flowers. May is also the time when more than 3,000 young Catholics throughout the Diocese will receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane led a May Crowning ceremony at the Catholic Center in Venice on May 7, 2026. During the ceremony, Bishop Dewane prayed that the “Holy Mother may intercede for all of us so that we may serve her Son, Jesus Christ in all aspects of our lives.” Catholic Center staff joined in singing songs to Our Lady with refreshments offered afterwards.

The Crowning of the Statue of Mary at Our Lady of Grace Parish in Avon Park took place on May 2, during a Mass for First Holy Communion. There were 19 children who received the Sacrament from Father Ronnie Sison, Pastor of Our Lady of Grace. For the Mass, each of the girls wore white dresses while the boys wore white dress shirts with black ties. The Statue of Mary was placed in a prominent location on the top step of the altar.

On May 4, at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte, the May Crowning ceremony took place in the school courtyard and was led the second graders.

The May Crowning for the students at St. Ann Catholic School in Naples took place during Mass on May 8. Mary was crowned by an eighth grader while second grade students, those who would receive their First Holy Communion the next day, presented flowers in Our Lady’s honor.

Father Gustavo Correa Garcia, has been relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of St. Leo the Great Parish in Bonita Springs, effective May 10, 2026, and thus has returned to the Diocese of Worcester.

Father Leszek Sikorski, a priest of the Diocese of Venice, has retired, effective May 1, 2026. Father had been on assignment outside of the Diocese, as a Chaplain in the U.S. Military since July 31, 2004.

Bishop Dewane encourages Catholic school students to finish year strong

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral on May 7, 2026. During the Mass, Bishop Dewane prayed that were making the most of their Catholic education by growing closer to the Lord. The Bishop also encouraged the students to finish the school year strong, noting how it will propel them into success going forward. Following the Mass, Bishop Dewane took time to speak with the eighth graders, who were encouraged to ask questions. Most of the questions revolved around what it is like to be a Bishop. Afterward, the Bishop and the eighth graders stood together for a group photo.

Bishop celebrates Baccalaureate Mass for Ave Maria University

Bishop Frank J. Dewane was the main celebrant for the Ave Maria University Baccalaureate Mass on May 8, 2026, in Ave Maria. The homilist was Most Rev. Stephen D. Parkes, Bishop of Savannah, who also serves as a Board Member for the University. The Ave Maria University commencement exercises took place May 9. Gov. Ron DeSantis was the commencement speaker and received an honorary degree from the university.

Priest receives Papal blessing for 50th anniversary of ordination

Father Vincent Clemente, Pastor of St James Parish in Lake Placid, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his Priestly Ordination on May 8, 2026, with a reception at the St. Paul Parish Hall in Arcadia. During the reception Father Clemente was presented with a Papal Blessing from Pope Leo XIV.

Postal Service food collections help local pantries

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on May 9, 2026, was a huge success. The Catholic Charities Diocese of Venice food pantry receive more than 2,000 pounds of food. The pantry serves about 2,600 individuals and families each month. The Postal food drive also brought more than 55,700 pounds of food to the St. Joseph Food Pantry in Bradenton, the main food pantry for Manatee County, and in 2025 served more than 22,200 families, or more than 83,700 individuals, including 25,073 children and 8,904 seniors. Alumni priest visits Naples high school

Father Garrett Braun, a 2010 graduate of St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, visited his alma mater on May 11, 2026. Father Braun, an Air Force Priest/Chaplain, is stationed at Aviano Air Force base in Italy. He spent time with the St. John Neumann theology classes and honors peer ministry. The students had great questions and Father Braun left them with great advice: “Continue to build your prayer life – your relationship with God.”

High school seniors continue sunset tradition

Graduating seniors at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers took part in the annual Senior Sunset on May 6, 2026. Between laughter, signed shirts, long hugs, and conversations that lasted a little longer than usual, the reality started to sink in for the Class of 2026: high school is coming to a close. For the first time, the evening also began with a rosary alongside parents and families – a meaningful way to begin a night centered around friendship, gratitude, and the memories these students have built together over the last four years. A beautiful reminder to pause, take it all in, and appreciate the moment before the next chapter begins.

Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus Missionary Opportunity for Summer 2026

The Diocese of Venice is now accepting applications for college-aged young adults to serve as Totus Tuus Missionaries for the 2026 Parish evangelization and catechesis Summer Program. It has been brought to the attention of the Diocese of Venice that parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. These messages often come from text/emails that look similar to official Diocesan/Parish/school numbers or accounts and often greet the recipient by name and have the priest’s, Bishop’s, or staff member’s name in the “From” line and/or closing signature of the message. The fake message often claims that the priest/Bishop/staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc.  There is an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a text or email, please immediately contact the Diocesan/Parish/school directly!

New men’s choir blessed by Bishop

“Dei Verbum,” the newly formed Men’s Choir at Jesus the Worker Parish in Fort Myers, was blessed by Bishop Frank J. Dewane after making their debut during a Mass for the Sacrament of Confirmation on May 2, 2026.

Before blessing the choir and accompanying musicians, Bishop Dewane praised their skill and expressed his certainty that their music will inspire all who hear them. During the blessing, Bishop Dewane called upon God to instill courage upon the men who have answered a specific call of the Lord in their lives.

Father Benjamin Casimir, Administrator of Jesus the Worker Parish, encouraged the formation of the choir, modeling them after the Haitian Men’s Choir at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples, where Father served prior to his assignment at Jesus the Worker.

It was on Jan. 6 when Father Casimir presented the idea of the men’s choir to the Parish, and quickly enthusiastic singers and musicians offered their talents to the endeavor. Since then, they have been rehearsing for their debut for Bishop Dewane. The name of the choir, “Dei Verbum,” is Latin for “Word of God,” something Father Casmir said best reflects their purpose in “serving the people of God by singing to the Lord.”

Dressed in black suits, with a white dress shirt, red tie and a red rose on their lapels, the coordination of color added to their presence. After the choir was blessed by Bishop Dewane, the members were enthusiastically applauded. Following the conclusion of the Mass, Father Casimir joined the choir while the newly confirmed had family photos taken.

The principal leader of the choir is Jose Osmin Garcia, and during the Confirmation Mass, the director was Maynor Alexander Ramirez Torez.

“Thank you everyone for your unconditional support and constant prayer,” Father Casimir said to the Parish faithful.

Ascension Solemnity moved to Sunday, May 17

The Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, Sunday, will be celebrated in the Diocese of Venice on May 17, 2026 (moved from May 14). The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops voted in the year 2000 to transfer the Solemnity of the Ascension from the Thursday, 40 days after Easter, to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, in accord with an indult granted to the US. Conference of Catholic Bishops by the Holy See. Therefore, for the Catholic Churches in the State of Florida, the Seventh Sunday of Easter is replaced by the Solemnity of the Ascension.

Cape Coral teacher and students recognized 

St. Andrew Catholic School teacher Tonya Roberts, as well as students Carter Willoughby, 5th grade, and Linnea Kerr, 8th grade, were recognized during the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce Excellence in Education Awards on May 4, 2026. The annual event honors educators and students from each of the local schools. Each honoree is presented a plaque and gifts provided by local businesses. Congratulations to the honorees!

Two Cardinal Mooney seniors achieve Eagle Scout rank

Beatrice Airey and Will Ittig, two graduating seniors from Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota have achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Beatrice earned an impressive 31 merit badges. For her Eagle Scout project, she led a fundraising effort to purchase a band trailer and worked on outfitting it with the necessary fittings and equipment – leaving a lasting impact on the school community. Will also earned 31 merit badges. For his Eagle Scout project, he built Stations of the Cross at Holy Cross Parish in Palmetto creating a lasting and meaningful space for prayer and reflection, For both students, the Eagle Scout rank was earned through dedication, leadership, and service. Congratulations to Beatrice and Will for this remarkable achievement!

Students write prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Fourth grade students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers spent time on May 5, 2026, to write prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary after learning about Marian Apparitions and the significance of Mary as the Mother of the Church. The month of May is dedicated to the Blessed Mother Mary and the lesson took place in the school butterfly garden where a statue of Mary is on display.

House Olympics lots of fun in Naples

The annual House Olympics at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples took place on April 29, 2026, with Raley House taking the victory. Neumann has four “Houses” which serve as a form of student government, dividing students into different teams. Throughout the year these teams earn points for success in various academic and athletic individual and team competitions. The House Olympics was the final competition. The House system helps younger students become more familiar with Neumann as freshman and through the years the older students serve as mentors to their House members.

Student choir recognized at Law Day

The St. Catherine Catholic School Choir was invited to perform at the Highlands Country Bar Association Law Day 2026 in Sebring on April 30, 2026. In addition, three St. Catherine students were recognized for their work in the Bar Associations American Dream contest which included posters and essays. Mayra Trejo-Bautista took first place in the sixth – eighth grade division poster contest and won a prize of $100. Isabella Mier took third place and received a $25 prize. In the essay contest, Francis Rivas Largaespada finished second in the sixth – eighth grade division for a prize of $50.
