Palm Sunday opens Holy Week

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (April 13, 2025) brought the faithful together as the Lenten Season nears a close (Holy Thursday). This is the day we remember and honor Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches that they set out on the ground along his path, before his crucifixion on Good Friday.  As is tradition, the faithful received palms upon entering church, which were then blessed by the presiding priest. During this Mass, the Passion of the Lord from the Gospel of Luke was read.

 Easter TV Mass to air at special time

The Televised Mass for the Homebound on Easter Sunday (April 20 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 12 p.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on WFTX-TV (FOX-4). Please check your cable provider for channel listings or visit www.dioceseofvenice.org/tvmass.

Jubilee Youth Pilgrimage April 26

Join with the young people of the Diocese of Venice on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. for a special Jubilee Year Youth Pilgrimage to the DeSoto Eucharistic Monument in Bradenton, 8250 DeSoto Memorial Highway. The pilgrimage will be a day of prayer, reflection, adoration and celebration of the Eucharist in the context of the Jubilee Year 2025. Inspired by the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” this event invites youth to grow in their faith, embrace renewal, and strengthen their commitment to Christ. Eastern Deanery youth soccer tournament a success

St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted an Eastern Deanery Youth Soccer Tournament on April 12, 2025. Five Parishes were represented, including St. Michael, St. James in Lake Placid, St. Catherine in Sebring, Our Lady of Grace in Avon Parish, and St. Paul in Arcadia. The finals pitted St. Michael versus St. Paul, with the Arcadia team taking home the championship with a final score of 2-1.

Verot weightlifter wins state title

Justin Davis, a senior weightlifter at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers won a Florida High School Athletic Association Olympic Class 1A Championship in the 183-pound weight class on April 12, 2025, in Lakeland. Justin lifted a combined 515 pounds to take the gold medal.

Theology on Tap April 24

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. The evening begins with food and refreshments at 7 p.m. Presentations and discussions about the Catholic Faith begin at 8 p.m. The next presentation will be by Father Christian Chami, Parochial Vicar at St. Jude Parish in Sarasota, and the title of his talk is “St. Charbel: Lessons in silence, faith, and obedience.” Please email Andres Prias at prias@dioceseofvenice.org for more information.

Divine Mercy commemoration in Naples

St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples, is hosting a two-part commemoration of Divine Mercy Sunday. First, the Parish will host a presentation on April 25, 2025, following the 8:30 a.m. Mass, by Sister Teresa de la Fuente, OLM, a member St. Faustina Kowalska, the founder of Divine Mercy Sunday. The theme for the presentation, which will follow a light breakfast reception, is, “Draw Water Joyfully from the Founts of Mercy.” On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, an additional commemoration begins at 2:30 p.m. and will include the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Mass, a procession and veneration of the Divine Mercy image and first-class relic of St. Faustina. Two special events for Canonization of Carlo Acutis

In recognition of the canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint, two Parishes will host special events. St. Patrick Parish, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, will host a live watch party for the canonization at 4:30 a.m. April 27. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. The Parish will also display the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit (created by the new saint) in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 27, when a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration will begin. On both days, several videos about the young Saint’s life will be shown throughout the exhibition. In addition, there will be a signing station for a get-well card for Pope Francis, a prayer station for prayers to the Holy Father and to the newest saint, and a prayer wall to post intentions. In addition, Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., Venice, will hold a special event beginning at 12:30 p.m., April 27, 2025, where participants can view sacred relics of St. Carlo Acutis and St. Faustina Kowalska, and watch a movie about Carlo’s life. The event begins with an Italian picnic and will include a special Holy Hour, including a Divine Mercy Chaplet and Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome. Divine Mercy Service in Fort Myers April 27

Our Lady of Light Parish, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers, will be hosting its annual Divine Mercy Sunday service on April 27, 2025. The prayer service opens with Adoration followed by Benediction from 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m., to allow the faithful time in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Mercy Image. This will be followed from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. by a bilingual (Spanish and English) Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Consecration. All are welcome.

Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. One year of college/work is preferred, but mature recent high school graduates will be considered. Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2 – 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Ignatian Preached Silent Retreat in May

Father Greg Cleveland, OMV, will introduce the great themes of the Spiritual Exercises in a group setting during an Ignatian Preached Retreat, from May 9 to May 12, 2025. The schedule includes conferences each day, daily Mass, and an opportunity to meet at least once with the retreat director for Confession and/or spiritual direction. Two honored by Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County

Father Bob Kantor, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Naples, and Marty Gauthier, co-chair of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County, were honored by the Dialogue with the first-ever Power of Community Award, March 30, 2025. Gauthier and Father Kantor were recognized as Catholic-Jewish Dialogue Healers and Helpers (Tikkun Olam). The award was presented during a celebration at the Nini Iser Jewish Cultural Center and was created to recognize individuals for their years of unwavering dedication to the Jewish community of Greater Naples through fostering fellowship, demonstrating steadfast support, and collaborating on shared goals.

Local golfer participates in Masters Drive, Chip, and Putt contest

St. Joseph Catholic School student Tobias Gordic-Ronderos, 11, earned a spot in the Drive, Chip, and Putt contest at the Augusta National Golf Course on April 6, 2025. Augusta is home to the Masters, one of the four Major Tournaments in professional golf. Qualifying for this nationally televised event is an incredible accomplishment, having won a regional qualifier to earn his ticket to the national competition which was televised on the Golf Channel. Tobias, from Bradenton, finished tied for 7th overall, out of 10 competitors. While not the result he was hoping for, Tobias did earn the best score for putting in his age group. Well done, Tobias!

Experiment explores famous disaster

On May 3, 2025, in Fort Myers, science students at Bishop Verot Catholic High School learned about the 1937 Hindenburg zeppelin disaster in class exploring everything from its historical context to the various theories surrounding the cause of the explosion. Through a hands-on experiment, the students generated hydrogen gas, captured it in a balloon, and safely ignited it to simulate the Hindenburg disaster. This engaging approach allowed them to witness the reactions firsthand and apply their knowledge to propose their own theories about what might have happened. Learning history has never been so explosive.

Chrism Mass to be celebrated in Naples on April 15

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Priests 50 Years: Father Gregory Klein, O. Carm., Father Normando Feliz, and Father Michael Mullen;

Priests 25 Years: Father Luis Pacheco, and Father Saji Ellickal Joseph, MCBS;

Deacon 25 Years: Deacon Richard Klish.

Bereavement Retreat for Hispanic parents

Deacon Roberto Landron is hosting a weekend Spanish-language retreat based on the Catholic faith to offer grieving parents a safe space of peace, comfort, and hope, as they form community with those who share their path. The retreat is April 25 – 27, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. The retreat costs $150 for individuals and $250 for couples. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Safe Environment Training

As part of the Safe Environment Program, the Diocese of Venice requires that all employees and those volunteers who work with children and/or vulnerable adults be fingerprinted and complete online training in Safe Environment prior to beginning employment or volunteering. Symposium celebrates Catholic educators

Catholic school teachers and administrators gathered for the fourth annual STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Education, Arts and Mathematics) Symposium hosted by the Diocese of Venice Department of Education.

The Symposium took place on March 28, 2025, at the Marriott of Sanibel Harbour Resort, and included more than 600 teachers and administrators. The core Gift of Christ of the Symposium was “Courage,” and the theme tag line was “Courageous Catholic.”

Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocese of Venice Superintendent of Catholic Education, opened the day with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. During the Mass, Father Belmonte praised the teachers and faculty for the love they have for their students and how courage is the strength given to each educator by the Lord to live out the mission of Catholic education in the Diocese of Venice, that is to introduce the Lord and Savior to the world.

Jason Jones, founder of The Vulnerable People Project, was the keynote speaker. He shared his personal story from being an atheist to overcoming heartache and eventually committing to serve God by protecting the unborn in any way possible. This journey included his entering the Catholic Church, and his work now takes him around the globe to defend the vulnerable from violence by promoting human dignity and inspiring solidarity. His organization creates movies and videos that raise awareness about people, especially children, who are at risk throughout the world such as in Gaza and the Ukraine.

Father Belmonte presented the Charitas Awards, the highest Diocesan Education award given to faculty and leadership for their constant exhibition and embodiment of the Virtue of Charity. Recipients, nominated by their peers,  are teachers and administrators who produce excellence in all that they do, including: radiates with care and compassion towards students and colleagues, treats others as brothers and sisters in Christ, embodies the Catholic Faith inside and outside the classroom, leads by example, and spreads Truth, Beauty and Goodness to those around them.

Teachers who have demonstrated leadership in STREAM and robotics education at their school were presented a Blue Apple Award. The color blue in the Bible has been described by scholars as denoting the Holy Spirit and Truth or service to God, as well as the waters of the new creation in the Book of Genesis, and most importantly the color blue is associated with our Blessed Mother.

Each Catholic school principal was also presented with an award for the roles they play at their respective schools. Additionally, Years of Service Awards were presented in categories of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 years. Mary (Binki) Ravazzoli, of St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota, was presented the Legacy Award for her service to educating children for the past 35 years.

All participants received a packet which showcased different school STREAM projects, shining a light on the success and offering ideas to fellow educators. A drawing for fun gift baskets, donated by each school, was also held.

Diocesan-wide opportunity for Confession ahead of Holy Week

The Diocese of Venice will have the Sacrament of Reconciliation available at the same time at ALL Parishes to allow the faithful ample opportunity to receive God’s Mercy. To make this opportunity as convenient as possible, in consultation with the Diocesan Presbyteral Council, Bishop Frank J. Dewane has designated the following days and times for Confession at Each Parish: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, April 11, 2025, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Lenten Masses at Diocesan schools conclude

Bishop Frank J. Dewane completed the latest in a series of Lenten Masses at Diocesan Catholic Schools for Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School in Venice on April 2, 2025. Recent school Masses included March 27, at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, March 31 at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton, and St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral, as well as on April 1 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers. Additional school Masses were celebrated earlier in the Lenten Season. The continuing message for each of the Masses was for the students to finish the Lenten Season strong and prepare for the coming Resurrection of the Lord at Easter.

40 Days for Life Spring Campaign through April 13

The 40 Days for Life Spring Campaign (from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025) aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses. The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Easter Triduum Retreat at OLPH

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, will host its annual Easter Triduum Retreat, April 17-20, 2025. The retreat begins with supper on Holy Thursday and ends with breakfast on Easter Sunday. Theology on Tap April 24

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting on the fourth Thursday of the month (April 24, 2025) at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. Bereavement Retreat for Hispanic parents

Deacon Roberto Landron is hosting a weekend Spanish-language retreat based on the Catholic faith to offer grieving parents a safe space of peace, comfort, and hope, as they form community with those who share their path. Carlos Acutis Canonization watch party April 26 in Sarasota

The Church of St. Patrick, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, is hosting a watch party for the Canonization of Carlos Acutis at 4:30 a.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. Carlos Acustis is identified as the First Millennial Saint, whose devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist was expressed in his creation the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit. The Parish will host the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit on display in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Parish Hall on April 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on April 27, when a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration will begin. Several videos about the young saint’s life will be shown throughout the exhibition. There will also be a signing station for a get-well card for Pope Francis, a prayer station for prayers to the Holy Father and to the newest saint, and a prayer wall to post intentions. Divine Mercy Service in Fort Myers April 27

Our Lady of Light Parish, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers, will be hosting its annual Divine Mercy Sunday service on April 27, 2025. The prayer service opens with Adoration followed by Benediction from 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m., to allow the faithful time in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Mercy Image. This will be followed from 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. by a bilingual (Spanish and English) Chaplet of Divine Mercy and Consecration. All are welcome.

Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2 – 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Ignatian Preached Silent Retreat in May

Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. The awards were presented on March 28, 2025, at a STREAM Symposium which included all Diocesan Catholic School faculty and staff. Awards include years of service, leadership, excellence in STREAM education, and exemplars of Catholic Education.

Legacy Award

The Legacy Award for 2025 goes to a faculty member who has been a teacher in the Diocese of Venice for 35 years: Mary (Binki) Ravazzoli of St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota.

Blue Apple Award

The Blue Apple Award will be given to teachers who have demonstrated leadership and excellence in STREAM, technology, and innovation at your school. The color blue in the Bible has been used to described by scholars as denoting the Holy Spirit and Truth or service to God, as well as the waters of new creation in the book of Genesis, and most importantly the color blue is often associated with our Blessed Mother.

Bishop to students: Finish Lent strong!

In the final few weeks of Lent, leading to Holy Week and the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ at Easter, Bishop Frank J. Dewane has been encouraging Catholic school students to refocus their faith lives and finish the Lenten Season strong.

Bishop Dewane has celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at seven Diocesan Catholic schools since Ash Wednesday (March 5, 2025), with more to come before Holy Week. His message has been to remind each student how Lent is a Season of sacrifice with its call to pray, to fast, and to give alms.

“How are you doing on that?” Bishop Dewane asked during a Mass on March 24, 2025, for students at St. Ann Catholic School in Naples. “Christ does ask a lot of us, and we need to pray a little more often. Perhaps there will be a little less play time, less watching TV, or less time on your devices. It needs to be a sacrifice to respond to that request of the Lord. In the Old Testament, the sacrifice was to butcher an animal. That is not the kind of sacrifice Jesus wants. We are all called to be part of the People of God, and as such during this Lenten Season to make sacrifices. We do that through those three central aspects of the Lenten Season: to pray, to fast, and to give alms.”

While making any sacrifice can be seen as a burden, Bishop Dewane explained that what the Lord asks is a demonstration of our love for God.

“Christ really asks us to demonstrate those three things (prayer, fasting, almsgiving) by the life we live, by the way we treat those around us, and how it is we give respect to God during this Lenten Season,” Bishop Dewane continued. “It is my prayer that you are all conscious to make a sacrifice at this time of year and that you set about to do that. Are you doing that?”

“YES!” the students said in unison.

The Bishop said he was pleased by their positive response and added that they need to keep up this effort on their own.

“No one else can do it for you,” Bishop Dewane concluded. “You said ‘yes,’ but you have some work to do. We all do, as we continue this Lenten journey, we must be ever more the doers of our faith. Let us practice that for the remainder of the Season.”

Masses celebrated by Bishop Dewane in the past week were at St. Ann Catholic School in Naples, March 24; St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School in Naples, March 25; and St. Martha Catholic School and St. Mary Academy in Sarasota, March 26. Additional Masses will be celebrated prior to Easter. Earlier Masses were celebrated at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota, March 5 (Ash Wednesday); St. Charles Borrome o Catholic School in Port Charlotte, March 7; and Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota, March 13.

When time permitted, Bishop Dewane spoke with eighth grade students while also answering their questions. A group photo was also taken.

A joint gathering of Faith & Ale and Faith & Wine of Lee County took place March 20, 2025, at St. John XXIII Parish in Fort Myers. The guest speaker was Dr. Tim Gray, President of The Augustine Institute, whose talk was titled: “Lent as the Model for the Spiritual Life.” Each men’s and women’s groups hold monthly gatherings to accompany men and women on their faith journey. Each group hosts a series of speakers from October through March. The next gathering of Faith & Ale is April 10, at St. Cecilia Parish, 3632 Sunrise Drive, Fort Myers. The evening starts at 6 p.m. and will feature a talk by Father Edwin Leahy, Headmaster at St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, Newark, NJ. Neumann band Shines at Festival Disney

The St. John Neumann Catholic High School band from Naples traveled to Orlando on March 14 – 15, 2025, to participate in Festival Disney, a prestigious student music competition bringing together talented young musicians from across the country. This festival provides an enriching and educational experience for concert bands, orchestras, and choirs at the middle school, high school, and college levels. The Neumann musicians performed exceptionally well, showcasing their dedication and musical talent. After their performance, they enjoyed some well-earned downtime exploring the theme park.

Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2-4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Sarasota

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota on March 13, 2025. This was the latest in a series of Masses Bishop Dewane celebrates throughout the Lenten Season at Diocese of Venice Catholic Schools. Following the Mass, the Bishop spoke to the eighth graders, urging them to finish the Lenten Season strong as they strive to grow closer to the Lord. The Bishop also encouraged the students to continue their education at nearby Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. The eighth graders were also allowed to ask the Bishop any question before a group photo was taken.

Verot soccer player earns high honor

Caroline Pelkofski, a senior soccer player at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers was named the Florida Dairy Farmers – Girls Soccer FHSAA Class 3A Player of the Year! This season, Caroline scored 20 goals and added 22 assists in leading her squad to a 15-3-1 record and a Region 3A-3 Final. She is now eligible for the athlete-of-the-year award. She will continue playing soccer at the University of South Florida. Congratulations Caroline!

HOPE Gala a huge success

The inaugural HOPE Gala at St. William Parish in Naples was a huge success on March 8, 2025. The Gala raised funds for the HOPE (Homeless Outreach Program for Empowerment) outreach of St. William Parish. The program is dedicated to helping the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Naples. Through partnerships with Catholic Charities and other local organizations, the program provides essential resources such as food, clothing, casework support, and pathways to better life, ensuring that those in need receive both immediate relief and long-term assistance.

Verot Regency Garden Gala wows

An unforgettable night took place on March 15, 2025, at the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Regency Garden Gala which took place in Bonita Springs. It was a beautiful evening filled with elegance, joy, and Viking spirit. Bishop Frank J. Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Port Charlotte

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Lenten Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on March 7, 2025, the First Friday of Lent. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to make an extra effort to live the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, almsgiving – to the best of their ability. The Bishop also reminded the students to increase their prayers during Lent so as to help them grow closer to the Lord.

Neumann wrestler wins state title

Lincoln Sledzianowski, a 132-pound wrestler at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, won the gold medal in his weight class at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, March 8, 2025. Two of his teammates also medaled. Benito Barnhart took silver in the 106-pound class, while Xavier Barnhart took the bronze in the 175-pound class. Well done to all of the wrestlers!

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal leaders meet Bishop

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocese of Venice Coordinator Maynor Ramirez and Deputy Coordinator Margarito Ronquillo met Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 3, 2025, at the Catholic Center in Venice. During the meeting, the pair presented the calendar of events and projects for this year 2025. Also present for the meeting was Jose Soto, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada and former Diocesan coordinator. Bishop Dewane gave his blessing at the events and prayed for the success of the Regional Congress to be held in the Diocese in the fall.

The third Diocese of Venice Eucharistic Conference will take place Saturday, March 29, at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center in Punta Gorda. Ash Wednesday: the Lenten Journey begins

The opening of the Lenten Season began with the traditional Ash Wednesday Mass, March 5, 2025, starting a journey toward the celebration of the Paschal Mystery of the Faith. The Lenten Season ends prior to the celebration of the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, April 17.

During this journey, and informed by the Gospel of Ash Wednesday, one must take time to live the Lenten Season in a particular way, through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, the three traditional disciplines of Lent.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane, in celebrating Mass for students at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota, reminded them of the traditional disciplines of Lent. Bishop Dewane emphasized how the Gospel message of Matthew is not a suggestion but a command.

“You heard clearly,” Bishop Dewane said. “Leave Mass today at the start of Lent with the message that it is not a request in the Gospel today, it’s a command that you and I are to go out to pray, to fast and we are to give alms. Set about during this Lenten Season to raise your mind and heart to God. Choose how you are going to do that, keeping in mind that Matthew identifies the path you should take.”

Bishop Dewane reminded the students that going to Mass each Sunday is one of the most important, and easiest ways to meet the first Lenten discipline. The Source and Summit of Our Faith, the Mass, is the ultimate form of prayer. As for fasting, the Bishop developed the concept of giving up on something and suggested foregoing gossip or speaking unkindly about others. Instead, he noted, choose to say only the good. “It is about how you are going to change your life through Lenten Season, in honor of God.”

As for almsgiving, Bishop Dewane said it is not about money but about doing kind things for others. A key is to do the good thing for the right reason, not just to impress others.

“Let this Lenten Season be a different one for you,” Bishop Dewane concluded.  “On this Ash Wednesday, you leave signed with the ashes, that means you are to give witness – one to the other. Make sure you give this witness when you go out from the school during this Lenten Season.”

On Ash Wednesday, the imposition of ashes is a solemn ritual that signals the beginning of the holy season of Lent. The ceremony is distinctive; there is no liturgical action like it throughout the entire liturgical year. Ashes come from a previous Palm Sunday. The palms are burned, the ashes collected and then crushed into a fine, sooty powder and placed into bowls, where they are blessed by the priest during the Ash Wednesday Mass after the homily. Then, in a Communion-like procession, people are invited to come forward, and the ashes are applied to each person’s forehead in the shape of a cross as the minister says either, “Turn away from sin and believe in the Gospel” (Mark 1:15), or “Remember that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), the older, more traditional invocation.

While the ashes marked on one’s forehead do not last very long, their purpose is to cleanse and purify one’s inner heart. Having a clean heart is a key part of living one’s faith life, and the precept of confessing grave sins at least once during the Lenten Season merits a reminder.

To facilitate this requirement, every Parish in the Diocese of Venice will be open with a confessor present 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, April 11, and 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 12. Check with your local Parish for additional confession times or the availability of a Penance Service. In addition, the Diocese will be participating in 24 Hours with the Lord, as called for by Pope Francis during Jubilee Year 2025, on March 28-29. Designated Parishes in each region of the Diocese will be open with confessors available. These opportunities are made available so that the faithful may find ample opportunity to receive God’s Mercy in the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Lenten Season.
