Diocesan priest named Monsignor

Congratulations to Father Robert R. Cannon who has been named Chaplain to His Holiness with the title Monsignor. Monsignor Cannon, who is a priest of the Diocese of Venice, and a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, has recently retired as the Chancellor of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS), where he served for the past eighth years.

Pets blessed across Diocese

To mark the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, Oct 4, 2024, Diocese of Venice Catholic Schools and Parishes hosted a blessing of the animals. At St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers, the Administrator, Father Steven Clemente, blessed with holy water each animal in turn. They ranged from horses to hamsters and every type and size of creature in between. Whether they were furry, scaly or feathery, there was no doubt the God’s creatures were much loved by their owners.

Many stand up against Amendment 4

Public prayer vigils took place in multiple locations throughout the Diocese of Venice in early October seeking the defeat of Amendment 4, an extreme and dangerous proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that would radically expand access to abortion. The first “VOTE NO ON 4!” rally took place during rush hour on Oct. 1, 2024, in downtown Bradenton. The rally was sponsored by the St. Joseph Parish Respect Life Ministry. Holding “Vote No on 4” signs, the rally had a captive audience as traffic was at a near standstill. The goal was to educate motorists on the dangers of Amendment 4. On Sunday, Oct. 6, there were two “Life Chain Across America” prayer vigils, one on U.S. 41 in Bonita Springs, near St. Leo the Great Parish, and the other was in Naples at U.S. 41 and Pine Ridge Road, near St. William Parish. Several hearty women, men and children withstood the rain to be visible. Catholic Charities hosts Family Fun Day

Guadalupe Social Services of Catholic Charities hosted its annual Family Fun Day on Oct. 6, 2024, in Immokalee. The events welcomed families for games, fun and food. The games included sack races, hoop tosses and more. Fun consisted of facepainting and playing games for prizes. The food included hot dogs, chips, frozen flavored ice, popcorn and more. For the adults there were also games with prizes. Staff from Catholic Charities and volunteers, such as the women’s lacrosse team from nearby Ave Maria University, helped run the event.

Rosary Congress continues until Oct. 11

The 2024 Diocesan Rosary Congress, scheduled at more than 50 Parishes between Oct. 5 and 11, 2024, got off to a strong start. At St. Thomas More Parish in Sarasota, the Rosary Congress ran from Oct. 7-8 and included 24 hours of Eucharistic Adoration with the hourly praying of the Holy Rosary. Prayer intentions were for the protection of life and the defeat of the dangerous Amendment 4, which, if approved, would radically expand access to abortion in Florida. However, several host Parishes were forced to cancel their participation in the Rosary Congress due to the threat and impacts of Hurricane Milton. Undy Sunday Collier County collection begins Oct. 19

The annual Undy Sunday Campaign will take place in Collier County the weekends of October 19 and 20, and October 26 and 27, 2024. This collection of new and unused underwear and socks helps thousands of underserved Elementary School students receive underwear and socks, a basic necessity many do not have. Catholic Mass on Veterans Day

On Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, the Diocese of Venice will hold a Memorial Mass in honor of the men and women who have served our country and continue to serve and protect us today. This is the 15th year the Diocese has held a Mass on Veterans Day. The opening ceremonies begin at 2:45 p.m., with the Mass at 3:00 p.m. in the Amphitheater at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72/Clark Road, approximately five miles east of I-75. The priests, deacons and Knights of Columbus in the Diocese will join in the celebration of the Mass. All are invited to attend, and active military personnel are asked to wear their uniform. Bishop speaks out on proposed amendments

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In this election season, it is critical to remember that creating a moral society is a responsibility of people of faith, and a basic part of the mission given to us by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The Church takes that responsibility quite seriously, and as such is obligated to provide guidance on the issues of the day, in accordance with Church teaching.

You may have heard some say, “But the Church has no right to talk about political issues!” While it is true that the Church is non-partisan and would never presume to tell you for whom to vote, the Church does have a role to play in encouraging, or discouraging, the support of various amendments and issues that will affect all. The very statement “the separation of Church and State” was first used by Thomas Jefferson, assuring concerned citizens that such a separation was provided by the First Amendment and in fact would protect citizens from government interference in the free practice of religion, not the other way around, as many believe the phrase to mean today.

Given this, as your Bishop, I encourage you to learn the facts about two dangerous amendments appearing on the Ballot in Florida for the upcoming election. It is my belief that once the facts are known, and the broad implications and grave consequences of these two proposed amendments understood, there will be no choice other than to vote NO on both Amendments 3 and 4.

Amendment 3 proposes legalizing the recreational use of marijuana in the state of Florida. Legalizing the recreational use of marijuana creates the impression it is safe to use. It isn’t.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who use marijuana have almost a 10% higher risk of becoming addicted. Additional research links the use of marijuana by young adults to psychiatric disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Women who use marijuana while pregnant increase the risk of stillbirth, premature birth, low birth weight and impaired development of the baby’s brain.

Making this drug more accessible by removing the criminal penalties and stigma attributable to it will most assuredly lead to increased recreational use of the drug, inflicting grave damage on human health and life! Legalization of the recreational use of marijuana has no place in our family-friendly state! Please learn the facts and Vote NO on Amendment 3.

Amendment 4 presents another grave danger to human health and life and proposes to embed in our state constitution a woman’s constitutional right to an abortion at any time, for any reason, including when the baby can feel pain, and throughout the ninth month of pregnancy. Common sense laws which have previously protected women who choose abortion will be removed. Doctors will no longer be required, and parental consent for a minor will no longer be necessary. This change to our state constitution would make Florida one of the most pro-abortion states in the nation, turning Florida into an “abortion tourism” state. Further, it is likely that such an amendment would lead to taxpayer-funded abortion for the people of Florida. Is this what we want?

Although it is my hope that one day abortion will be unthinkable, Florida’s current abortion law which includes these commonsense laws to protect women and girls and puts limits on when and why an abortion can be performed, is far preferable to a constitutional amendment that puts not only unborn babies, but women, and girls at great risk.

Keep in mind that in Florida’s entire history, only once has a constitutional amendment ever been removed once put in place. Think carefully before you make such a permanent choice for our state! Please learn the facts and Vote No on Amendment 4.

In addition to learning the truth about Amendments 3 and 4, please also examine two new voter resources produced by the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops (FCCB). The FCCB Voter Guide provides information about Catholic teaching, offers considerations on key topics, and poses questions regarding current issues to assist voters in evaluating candidate positions or political party platforms. A second resource, The 2024 Presidential Candidate Comparison, provides a comparison of the positions of candidates for U.S. President, Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, on multiple topics. The Comparison has been compiled directly from policies, public statements, official websites, and other sources. Diocesan Rosary Congress runs Oct. 5-11

The month of October each year is dedicated to the Most Holy Rosary. Yearly, on Oct. 7, the Universal Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in honor of the Blessed Mother. October is also the month in which Mary appeared for the last time to shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, urging them to “say the rosary every day to obtain peace for the world.”

In celebration of the Blessed Virgin, the Annual Diocese of Venice Rosary Congress will take place at more than 40 Parishes between Oct. 5 and Oct. 11, 2024.

The theme for the 2024 Diocesan Rosary Congress is, “Do Whatever He Tells You” (John 2:5), Mary’s last utterance in Scripture, in which she speaks to the servants at the Wedding Feast at Cana.

Each host Parish will offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass prior to the hourly praying of the Rosary. Many Parishes will include the Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with five decades of the Rosary being prayed aloud by the faithful. The length of time will vary and could last up to 24 hours. All the faithful are welcome to participate at any location at any time. The primary public intention for the Rosary Congress in 2024 will be for the defeat of Amendment 4, an extreme and dangerous proposed amendment to the Florida Constitution that would radically expand access to abortion. Initiated in 2021, the Rosary Congress is encouraged by the Diocesan Office of Evangelization as a way to present a unique opportunity to place all prayer intentions and the needs of all the faithful into the loving arms of the Mother of God.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane said praying the Rosary is a key component in one’s Faith life. Citing the example of St. Mother Teresa, Bishop Dewane referred to the power of the Rosary, calling everyone to pray it and live it and persevere. In addition, the Bishop noted how Pope Francis frequently describes praying the Rosary as armor to be used in the spiritual battle we all face each day.

“We pray the Rosary to honor Our Mother, who said that glorious ‘Yes!’ to God, bringing His Son into the world for our salvation,” Bishop Dewane said.

Carol O’Neill of Incarnation Parish in Sarasota said the 2023 Rosary Congress inspired her to spend several hours in prayer. “Our Lady means so much to me. She is a true inspiration. She is who I pray to when I seek guidance or counsel. I felt this was a great opportunity to spend more time in focused prayer. The world needs prayers. We all do.”

Announced on Oct. 2, Pope Francis has called for a global day of prayer and fasting on Oct. 7, the Feast of the Holy Rosary, to mark the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack of Israel amid escalating violence in the region. Pope Francis will personally go to Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major on Oct. 6 to pray the rosary on the eve of the Feast Day, “to invoke the gift of peace through the intercession of the Most Holy Mary.”

The Memorial of Our Lady of the Rosary directly commemorates the 1571 naval Battle of Lepanto. The Holy League (a naval coalition of European Catholic maritime states) defeated the vastly superior Ottoman navy in the Gulf of Patras near modern day Greece, overcoming tremendous odds after Pope Pius V called upon all Catholics to pray the Rosary for victory. This victory successfully halted the spread of the Ottoman Empire into Rome and beyond. The Feast Day is also referred to as Our Lady of Victory.

40 Days for Life fall 2024 campaign kicks off

With an amendment to the State Constitution threating to radically expand abortion in Florida, the 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign kicked off on Sept. 24, 2024, with a renewed sense of urgency for all pro-lifers.

The Mercy of God can provide healing for many, and by acting as His messenger, through participation in one of three active 40 Days for Life prayer campaigns within the Diocese of Venice, one can reflect that mercy onto the world.

The 40 Days for Life campaign runs through Nov. 3 and seeks a peaceful end to abortion in the U.S. and around the world through the power of prayer. It is the presence of more than one million prayer warriors in hundreds of cities worldwide – including Fort Myers, Naples, and Sarasota within the Diocese of Venice – that will make a difference in this important battle to save the unborn.

To help jumpstart the fall campaign in Fort Myers, a traditional opening vigil took place Sept. 24 in front of the Planned Parenthood abortion center at 6418 Commerce Park Drive. Led by coordinators Rick and Paula Hellenbrand of St. Andrew Parish in Cape Coral, the vigil included Father Fritz Ligonde, Parochial Vicar at St. Columbkille Parish in Fort Myers, and speakers who covered the whole spectrum of the pro-life movement, including a mom who once had an abortion.

“I know what the moms feel like when they come to Planned Parenthood: lied to; betrayed; and they abandoned to have a lifetime of regret,” said Dorina Hayes, a Catholic wife and mother raising her family in Orlando who had multiple abortions before her future husband, who is pro-life, said he wanted her to keep their unborn child. She is part of Silent No More, a group of women who have had an abortion and speak publicly, sharing their story of regret and spreading the word how they learned too late about the sanctity of all life, especially the unborn.

“I still feel the pain and regret to this day,” said Hayes, a mother of seven and grandmother of two. “But I am blessed because I found the right man, who stopped me from aborting my baby girl. She is a mother of her own now and I can’t help but think of what the babies I lost would be like today. I can be silent no more.”

Rob Reynolds, a pro-life activist, spoke on the proposed Amendment 4, which would essentially allow abortions, for any reason, until birth, a radical change from the current law which is a 6-week ban on abortions with some exceptions. He encouraged people to put lawn signs opposing the amendment in front of their homes and businesses as well as to volunteer to stand outside early voting sites to hold up signs to Vote No on 4!

“I held up a sign during the primary, when it wasn’t on the ballot, and people spoke to me, wanting to know more,” Reynolds said. “People misunderstand what the amendment is trying to do. They don’t know that this amendment would end the parental consent requirement; eliminate the 24-hour waiting period and much more. It is dangerous and we must do all we can to get all of our friends and neighbors to Vote No on 4!”

It was announced at the Fort Myers kick-off that there will be a mid-point rally at 6 p.m., Oct. 17, with guest speaker Dr. Haywood Robinson, a former abortionist turned pro-life Director of Medical Affairs and Education for the national 40 Days for Life movement.

The 40 Days for Life vigil takes place in hundreds of locations nationwide as the faithful stand in prayer, in the public right of way, outside of abortion facilities seeking an end to abortion in the U.S. and the world. At the direction of Bishop Frank J. Dewane, the Diocese of Venice was one of the first Dioceses in the country to participate in 40 Days for Life campaign in 2007.

The fall campaign encompasses October, which is National Respect Life Month, and includes Respect Life Sunday (Oct. 6). Since its inception, 40 Days for Life participants report having saved 24,853 lives from abortion during a campaign. That’s the type of impact that led an ACLU spokesperson to describe 40 Days for Life as the “greatest threat to choice.” 40 Days for Life has contributed to a groundswell of pro-life support worldwide. More than 155 abortion centers, along with numerous referral centers, where campaigns have been hosted, have closed their doors forever.

All are encouraged to participate in the 40 Days for Life prayer vigil. Many area Parishes have signed up for specific days and hours, but all are free to join at any time. The peaceful vigil takes place in the public right of way and appropriate signs are provided.

Parishes across the Diocese of Venice will conduct a special collection to enhance this life-affirming work. The funds remain in the Diocese of Venice and facilitate a Culture of Life as a faith community in Southwest Florida and to support Respect Life Programs, among them, “Walking with Moms in Need,” a Project Rachel. This collection does not support the political activities associated with Amendment 4.

Florida Bishops Gather to Discuss Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship

Recently, the Florida Bishops gathered to discuss the meaning and importance of Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ teaching document on the political responsibility of Catholics. Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship provides guidance for Catholics in the exercise of their rights and duties as participants in our democracy and urges Catholics to shape their political choices in the coming election in light of Catholic teaching. In the Florida Bishops’ discussion, Bishop Frank J. Dewane shares this excerpt from the guide: “It is our responsibility to learn more of Catholic teaching and tradition, to participate in Church life, to learn from trustworthy sources about the issues facing our communities, and to do our best to make wise judgements about candidates and government actions.”

This direction from Bishop Dewane and the USCCB guide is particularly relevant today, given the threat of Amendment 4, a dangerous pro-abortion amendment which seeks to embed unregulated, unrestricted abortion in our state constitution, allowing abortion at any time, for any reason. The Florida Bishops are asking all Floridians to vote NO on Amendment 4, and Parishes in the Diocese of Venice have been sharing information about the dangers of Amendment 4 for months, at Bishop Dewane’s urging.

“The Church has not only a role here, but also a responsibility to its faithful to guide them in the teachings of the Church regarding the important issues of the day,” adds Bishop Dewane. “Every election presents an opportunity to have your voice heard. Make sure that you are voting in good conscience, and that you are doing so with the mind of Christ.”

The USCCB guide shares a prayer from the US Bishops seeking wisdom for all: “May God bless you as you consider and pray over these challenging decisions. May God bless our nation with true wisdom, peace, and mutual forgiveness, that we may decide together, through our democratic processes, to uphold the dignity of life and the common good.”

Youth enjoy special retreat

St. John Paul II Young Adult Ministry of St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples welcomed more than 100 youth from Collier County for a daylong retreat on Sept. 14, 2024. The focus of the day was on the Eucharist and vocations. The retreat helped to create a truly special and transformative experience for the youth.

Classroom talk focus on invasive species

Second graders at St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School in Naples were treated to a fascinating presentation on Sept. 10, 2024, by Faith Kruis, of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). Kruis shared her expertise on one of Florida’s most notorious invasive species—the Burmese python. The students learned all about where these reptiles are found, how they’re caught, how to identify them, and many other interesting facts.

5K Walk/Run for Life in Naples Oct. 5

This annual event will take place Oct. 5, 2024, at St. Agnes Parish, 7775 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples. Registration on the day of the event opens at 6:00 a.m. with the race beginning at 7:15 a.m. This event is meant to promote a respect for life message and raise funds for pro-life causes while encouraging healthy living. Pro-Life program in Naples Oct. 11

St. William Parish, 601 Seagate Drive, Naples, is hosting a pro-life program on Oct. 11, 2204, at 1 p.m. in the Parish Hall. The program, titled: “Wisdom in the Constitution and America’s Religious Legacy: Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness – how can we uphold it?” is presented by Dr. Seana McGuire Sugrue, D.C.L. Sugrue is the Ambassador Michael Novak Chair of Politics at Ave Maria University, where she has previously served as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty. This peaceful prayer movement needs everyone to join in praying for the unborn and families on the public sidewalk outside of Planned Parenthood. The need for support is more important than ever as there are efforts to push to dispense the abortion pill and to pass more extreme abortion measures onto the people of Florida.

A number of events are taking place for the fall campaign. In Fort Myers, a 6:30 p.m. kickoff will be Tuesday, Sept. 24, in front of Planned Parenthood, 6418 Commerce Park Drive, Fort Myers. The Sarasota campaign has its own special kickoff event from 10:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, Sept. 26, at Community Pregnancy Clinic, 1419 7th Street Sarasota, around the corner from the regional headquarters of Planned Parenthood.

“The Pro-Life movement is all about people coming together in every way they can to be a witness for the unborn, being a voice for the voiceless,” said Diocese of Venice Respect Life Director Jeanne Berdeaux. “Participating in 40 Days for Life is one way to do that. Another way to act is to vote NO on Amendment 4!”

This misleading and deceptive amendment would drastically expand access to abortion in Florida, and is dangerous for full-term babies, women, and girls. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

News of Amendment 4, a dangerous pro-abortion amendment which will appear on the Florida ballot this fall, has no doubt reached you by now. The amendment is misleading in its language, and dangerous not only for full-term babies, but women, and girls. It is my hope that once you look into the facts of this proposed change to Florida’s state constitution, you will unequivocally vote “no” in November.

Keep in mind, if you will, that the word “no” is not always negative. In this case, it is not only a “positive,” it is positively crucial, and even lifesaving! Plan to do something positive by saying “yes” to life by voting “no” in November.

Why vote “no” on Amendment 4?

Titled “Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion,” this amendment would embed unregulated abortion in the state constitution, establishing an unlimited right to abortion throughout the pregnancy, making Florida one of the most pro-abortion states in the nation.

Amendment 4 would allow for second and third trimester abortions, a stark contrast to Florida’s current Heartbeat Protection Law which allows abortion up until a heartbeat can be detected, at about six weeks gestation. Although in a perfect world any abortion would be unthinkable, it is certainly preferable to have some limits on when it is legal.
This amendment allows for abortion for any reason, including consideration of the “patient’s health,” which is undefined in the amendment. Current Florida law includes an exception for when the pregnant woman’s life is in danger, among many other exceptions.

Further, Amendment 4 puts not only babies, but women and girls at risk. The amendment weakens the current medical doctor requirement, allowing “healthcare providers,” not just physicians, to determine if an abortion is necessary to protect the mother’s health. This is dangerous for women.

The Amendment also eliminates the currently required parental “consent” for a minor to have an abortion, preserving only parental “notification.” This is reckless, and destructive, for girls, and their families.

In short, Amendment 4 goes dangerously beyond even what was permitted in the Roe v. Wade ruling. It is extreme, and unnecessary. There is simply no need to expand what is an already expansive abortion law in Florida.

Some have said that the Church has no place in politics. It is true that the Church would never suggest you vote for a particular candidate. However, in this election year, it is critically important to remember that shaping the moral character of society is a responsibility of people of faith, and a basic part of the mission we have received from Jesus Christ. In this case, when confronted with such a clear threat to human life and dignity, the Church must not be silent and simply cannot remain on the sidelines.

Let us unite in prayer to defeat this expansive, pro-abortion amendment, and vote “no” on Amendment 4 in November.

Defeat of Amendment 4 remains focus

Amendment 4, a dangerous and misleading amendment that seeks to drastically expand abortion in Florida, will appear on the ballot in the fall.

If passed, this amendment would allow late-term abortions and jeopardize health and safety protections for women and minors. It removes doctors from the abortion decision, includes a broad “health” loophole, and eliminates parental consent.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane, and all of the Florida Bishops, have been outspoken against Amendment 4. The Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops has released several statements explaining the danger to Floridians should Amendment 4 pass (Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops at (https://www.flaccb.org/abortion-amendment).

Most recently, during the Aug. 30, 2024, show on Relevant Radio, “Witnessing Faith with Bishop Dewane,” Bishop Dewane discusses the dangers of Amendment 4 with Michele Taylor, Associate Director for Communications for the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Karen Schwarz, Director of Communications for the Diocese of Venice. Listen to their brief discussion (30 minutes) and learn the facts!

The show examines the misleading language in Amendment 4, and its real meaning. You can hear simply stated and straightforward reasons why you should Vote No on Amendment 4, even for those who think abortion should be legal in some circumstances. Abortion is already legal in Florida, and the current law includes many exceptions for extenuating circumstances. There is simply no need to expand an already expansive abortion law in the state! Amendment 4 is not what it seems, and it’s way too extreme. State Supreme Court Adds Warning to Ballot!

On Aug. 21, 2024, Florida’s Supreme Court voted to add an explanatory note to the misleading ballot language of Amendment 4. The Court approved the Financial Impact Estimating Statement re-written by state economists in July, and the resulting paragraph will now follow Amendment 4 on the ballot so voters can read the potential impact of this extreme amendment. Importantly, the statement informs voters that Amendment 4 could force Florida taxpayers to subsidize elective abortions if Amendment 4 passes in November! The paragraph that will now follow Amendment 4 on the ballot can be found below:

Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion (23-07)

The proposed amendment would result in significantly more abortions and fewer live births per year in Florida. The increase in abortions could be even greater if the amendment invalidates laws requiring parental consent before minors undergo abortions and those ensuring only licensed physicians perform abortions. There is also uncertainty about whether the amendment will require the state to subsidize abortions with public funds. Litigation to resolve those and other uncertainties will result in additional costs to the state government and state courts that will negatively impact the state budget. An increase in abortions may negatively affect the growth of state and local revenues over time. Because the fiscal impact of increased abortions on state and local revenues and costs cannot be estimated with precision, the total impact of the proposed amendment is indeterminate.

High school hosts evening Eucharistic Adoration for students and families

Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota hosted a Eucharistic Adoration with praise and music in the All Saints Chapel on the evening of Aug. 21, 2024. The Adoration was open to all families and led by Father Christian Chami, Parochial Vicar at nearby St. Jude Parish.

Backpacks blessed for school year

Father Eric Scanlan, Pastor of Incarnation Parish in Sarasota, blessed the backpacks of the students at Incarnation Catholic School following an all-school Mass on Aug. 26, 2024. Blessings were for the backpacks to help carry our students strongly, successfully, and safely throughout the school year. Father Scanlan also visited the classrooms to pray with the students and offer a blessing as well.

Young students tour Bradenton church

Kindergarten students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton were treated to a tour of the Parish church on Aug. 23, 2024. Liliana Ronderos, St. Joseph Parish Director of Religious Education, and Michelle Szczepanski, Parish Youth Minister, were the tour guides. The tour included stops at the various statues, the sacristy, the chapel and other key locations in the church. Each part of the Mass was explained to help the students better understand what they see each week. In the sacristy, some of the students were allowed to try on the priest vestments. During each stop, the students asked great questions, and they were eager to learn more.

Knights escort Silver Rose through Diocese

Each year, from early March through mid-December, Silver Roses are stewarded by Knights of Columbus councils along routes from Canada to Mexico. Every stop the Silver Rose makes throughout the pilgrimage is a rosary-centered occasion for Knights, parishioners and community members to pray for respect for life, for the spiritual renewal of each nation, and for the advancement of the message of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The Silver Rose visited 14 Parishes in the Diocese of Venice from Aug. 21 to Aug. 27, 2024. Stops included prayer services, the praying of the Holy Rosary or the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This custom started in 1960 between Mexico and Texas. Now there are a total of eight silver roses, including one blessed by Pope Francis. The journey now starts in Canada and it travels to Mexico. The intent is the same: to reaffirm the Order’s commitment to the sanctity of life and honor the Blessed Virgin under her title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of the Americas.

Catholic Thinkers Men’s Group 4th Season begins Sept. 4 in Naples

The Catholic Thinkers Men’s Group of St. Agnes Parish begins its fourth season at 9:30 a.m., Sept. 4, 2024, at Perkins Restaurant, 3585 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. The topic is; “National Eucharistic Congress: Were the Revival Objectives Achieved?” The discussion will last no more than 90 minutes and registration is limited to 30 participants. 15th annual Diocesan Veterans Day Mass to be held in Sarasota

On Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11, 2024, the Diocese of Venice will hold a Memorial Mass in honor of the men and women who have served our country and continue to serve and protect us today. This is the 15th year the Diocese has held a Mass on Veterans Day. The opening ceremonies begin at 2:45 p.m., with the Mass at 3 p.m. in the Amphitheater at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72/Clark Road, approximately five miles east of I-75. The priests, deacons and Knights of Columbus in the Diocese will join in the celebration of the Mass. All are invited to attend, and active military personnel are asked to wear their uniform. Attendees are also encouraged to wear sunscreen and bring a hat. There is ample seating and parking at the cemetery. Evangelization Training in September

Would you like to know what authentic, non-confrontational, joyful evangelization looks and sounds like? If so, be sure to attend the upcoming workshop with St. Paul Street Evangelization Vice President Adam Janke from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sept. 28, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection Parish, 8121 Cypress Lake Drive, Fort Myers. Mass will be offered at 8 am in the Parish Chapel. There will also be an optional “Live Lab” experience from 4 p.m.- 5 p.m., giving participants the chance to put into practice what they have just learned. Saint Paul Street Evangelization is a non-profit, grassroots organization that has mobilized thousands of ordinary Catholics to take the Gospel to the public square and be instruments of God in the salvation of souls. The one-day Basic Evangelization Training with SPSE is open to all adult parishioners from any Catholic parish. Registration is $25 and includes light breakfast, lunch and all training materials. A Walk With Jesus For Grieving Parents retreat in October

The pain from grief can be extreme, but the death of a child is even more intense. Parents experience an emptiness like no other. If you are mourning the loss of a child (from infancy to adulthood), consider attending a Catholic faith-based weekend retreat from Oct. 11 until Sunday Oct. 13, 2024, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Theology on Tap Sarasota Sept. 19 in Sarasota

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed and social setting. On Sept. 19, 2024, the gathering will be held at Big Top Brewing – Restaurant and Brewery, 3045 Fruitville Commons Boulevard, Sarasota. The evening begins with food and refreshments at 7 p.m. Presentations and discussions about the Catholic Faith begin at 8 p.m. The speaker will be Jeanne Berdeaux, Director of the Diocese of Venice Respect Life Office. Women’s Bible Study in Naples

St. William Catholic Church, 601 Seagate Drive, Naples will once again be hosting the Naples Area Inter-Parish Women’s Bible Study entitled “Walking with Purpose.” This bible study was voted in the top 10 for Catholic programs in the country and last year the Church Hall accommodated close to 250 women. The bible study take place from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesdays, from Sept. 24 to Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024.
