Father Gerard Critch, Pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples is on Temporary Leave, effective May 30, 2025.

Father David Portorreal is assigned as Administrator at St. Peter the Apostle and relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar at St. Leo the Great Parish in Bonita Springs, effective May 30, 2025.

Totus Tuus summer program continues

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life. The week-long program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first two weeks, the program has taken place at six Parishes, with the most recent at Sacred Heart in Bradenton, St. Katharine Drexel in Cape Coral and St. Paul in Arcadia. Upcoming host Parishes include: St. Agnes, Naples (June 15-20); Ave Maria in Ave Maria and St. Jude in Sarasota (June 22-27); St. Cecilia, Fort Myers; Our Lady of Light, Fort Myers; St. John XXIII, Fort Myers; St. Thomas More, Sarasota (July 6-11); St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Parish hosts Mission Week

St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted a Parish Mission Week the week of June 2-7, 2025. The week included daily prayer, reflection and trips to different locations to be true missionaries of Christ in the world. The outreach included visiting a nursing home as well as the homebound and needy throughout Hardee County. A Family Day on June 8 which included food, entertainment and music concluded the week. The Parish Mission was organized by the Servant Sisters of the Virgin of Matara who serve at the Parish. Visiting members of the religious order also assisted throughout the week.

Knights elect new State officers

The Florida Knights of Columbus have elected new officers, including Deacon Richard Dahn Jr., of St. Agnes Parish in Naples as State Treasurer. Father Bob Kantor, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish, serves as the State Chaplain for the Knights. The election results were announced May 25, 2025, at the 121st annual Florida State Council Convention in Jacksonville.

Sarasota Parish to host Brazilian Festival July 14

St. Jude Parish, 3930 17th St., Sarasota, is hosting a Festa Junina Brasilera (Brazilian Festival), from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., June 14, 2025. The festival will include food, live music, kids’ games and other activities. St. Jude Parish is also having a Drive Away Raffle for one lucky person to win a 2025 Jeep Wrangler. Tickets are $100 and available in the Parish office or online at www.stjudesarasota.org and must be purchased by noon on Sunday, June 15. All raffle proceeds will benefit the new church building fund.

Children Throughout the World Need Our Help!

The Administration is terminating all but two of Catholic Relief Services’ school feeding programs, eliminating a daily school meal for close to 800,000 children in 11 countries beginning in July. For many, this was their only meal of the day. These terminations aren’t just broken agreements with CRS. They are broken promises to children, to farmers, to entire communities. Please ask your members of Congress to urge the Administration to reverse these terminations. Visit https://www.crs.org/act/mcgovern-dole to be heard.

Theology on Tap June 19 in Sarasota

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. The next gathering is June 19 and will feature a presentation from Father Christian Chami, Parochial Vicar at St. Jude Parish in Sarasota with the topic: “St. Charbel: Lessons in silence, faith and obedience.” The evening begins with food and refreshments at 7 p.m., with the presentations and discussions about the Catholic Faith beginning at 8 p.m. Please email Andres Prias at prias@dioceseofvenice.org with any questions.

Join Bishop Frank J. Dewane for his monthly half-hour radio program on Relevant Radio on 106.7 FM and 1410 AM in Fort Myers and 93.3 FM and 1660 AM in Naples. Ordination to the Priesthood July 12

Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites the faithful to the Ordination to the Priesthood of Transitional Deacons Joseph Doherty, Jacob Gwynn and Pat Long. The Ordination will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 1301 Center Road, Venice. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this important event in the lives of Deacons Joseph, Jacob and Pat as well as the Diocese of Venice. The Ordination will also be livestreamed.

Respect Life Volunteers Needed!

Ave Maria Youth Conference July 11-13

The 2025 Ave Maria University “Proclaim” Youth Conference is July 11-13. The theme for the Conference is “But as for you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:60). The Conference will include talks from Sister Maria Jose Socias, SCTJM, Michael Gormley, Mari Pablo, and Father Joseph Lugalambi. Music will be by Epic Music Ministries. The Conference will include Mass, Adoration, praise and worship, lodging, meals, t-shirts, a pizza night, and more. Registration is $195. per person. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Faith is Fun! 2025 Totus Tuus Summer Catechetical Camp begins

The Totus Tuus one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camps have begun with the first three Parishes hosting between June 1 and June 6, 2025. An additional 15 Parishes will host the weekly program through July 25.

Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours” – is a one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camp program, for students entering grades 1-12, and aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

The first host Parishes are St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Parrish; St. Finbar Parish, Naples; and San Pedro Parish, North Port.

Totus Tuus missionaries, trained college-aged or older men and women, lead the program. The week-long camps are divided into two segments, with the day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, and an evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. They also learning about the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

At San Pedro Parish, the young children start each day singing and dancing to “My Lighthouse,” an inspirational song that puts a focus on the importance of having the Lord at the center of their lives. Each day they receive a different colored string, which represents a key word for the day. Eventually, the group will put all they learned together and go to Mass.

In the evenings, the older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditation, prayer and fellowship. The final night (Thursday) includes participation in Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane encouraged the pilot program be brought to the Diocese in 2022 to great success, with expansions in 2023 to 11 host Parishes, 12 for 2024, and now 18 for 2025.

2025 Totus Tuus summer program to be featured at 18 Parishes

The successful Totus Tuus summer catechetical Parish program will soon be taking place at a Parish near you.

The final week of May saw 15 missionaries undergo intensive training and preparation as the first three Parish camps start June 1, 2025. Ultimately, there will be seven separate weeks with a total18 Parishes serving as weekly hosts through July 25. More than 1,000 children and teens will be impacted by this special outreach.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane encouraged the pilot program be brought to the Diocese in 2022 to great success, with expansions in 2023 to 11 host Parishes, 12 for 2024, and now 18 for 2025. During past visits to Totus Tuus camps, Bishop Dewane has been impressed by the response each child had to the uplifting program. “In each classroom everyone was so excited and alive about their love of the Lord!”

Bishop Dewane celebrated Mass for the Totus Tuus missionaries on May 28, while they were going through their training at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. He encouraged the young missionaries to call upon the Holy Spirit to guide them through the summer and reminded them of the important role they will have for the boys and girls they encounter this summer.

This training focused on the spiritual aspect of the Totus Tuus program, including daily prayer, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Mass. Other components of the training covered the fundamentals of teaching young children and youth, as well as the fun aspects of the camp including the songs and dances that everyone will learn.

The week-long camps (9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday) are divided into two segments, with the day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, and an evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. The older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditations, prayer and fellowship.

Most importantly, Totus Tuus works to complement what parents teach their children in matters of their faith. This is something Bishop Dewane has stressed since the program had its trial run in the Diocese in 2022.

The 2025 Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus Missionaries range in age from 18 to 27, and two are returning for a second year: Jesse Gomez, a Diocesan Seminarian, and Jesenia Cortes who is from St. James Parish and Santigo Mission in Lake Placid. A second seminarian, Tam Tran will also be a missionary this year.

Cortes looks forward to making a connection with the children again. “I’m so excited to be back. Last summer, serving as Team Leader, gave me the chance to witness God’s goodness and His personal call to holiness in each child and teen we met. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue sharing His love and growing in faith together.”

Bishop Verot baseball team falls in state semifinals

The Bishop Verot Catholic High School baseball team from Fort Myers fell in the state class 3A semifinals on May 19, 2025, at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers to Miami Springs. The team won the 3A regionals to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year after beating Calvary Christian in a best of three series. The Vikings finished the season with an impressive 32-3 record, a school record, and have been ranked as high as 11^th in the nation.

St. Martha Catholic Schools unveils new mascot

The new Knight Mascot for St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota was introduced during a Pep Rally on May 15, 2025. The rally also included a celebration and recognition of all of the school clubs and sports teams.

Two from Mooney receive accolades for basketball success

The star player and head coach of the State Championship Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougars, who won the FHSAA 3A Championship on March 1, 2025, have both received top honors for their success this year. Senior Kali Barrett was voted the Florida Dairy Farmer 2025 3A Girls Basketball Player of the Year, while Head Coach Marlon Williams was named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2025 Class 3A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. The Lady Cougars won the first State Championship in school history in March with a 27-9 record, finishing on a 17-game winning streak after starting the season 7-9. The program is rooted in hard work, discipline, and in the heart – and it showed every step of the way. Congratulations Kali and Coach Williams!

Mother’s Day Mass and Brunch at OLPH

Students collect food for local community

Students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers completed a service project for Lent that included collecting peanut butter and jelly for the Community Cooperative, a soup kitchen and food bank. Students collected an astounding 1,400 jars, packing up and delivering them on April 16, 2025. This is a great example of how Catholic school students live out their Catholic values through service and generosity.

Theology on Tap May 15 in Sarasota

Calling all young adults! Come enjoy an evening of faith, fellowship and fun at Theology on Tap on the third Thursday of every month. The May 15, 2025, gathering will feature a talk by Father Leland Thorpe, OMV, who assists at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. The talk is titled “Behold Your Mother: Thoughts on Mary in Mary’s Month.” Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting. St. Mary Academy Golf Tournament May 18

St. Mary Academy is hosting their 12th Annual Golf Tournament with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., May 18, 2025, at University Park Country Club, 7671 The Park Blvd, Sarasota. This is a best-ball tournament, and the cost is $150 per player. Participants will receive a goody bag, drinks, snacks, prizes, awards, and a sit-down BBQ dinner buffet. The event supports St. Mary Academy, which educates students with special learning needs. Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for couples who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2 – 4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Ignatian Preached Silent Retreat in May

Father Greg Cleveland, OMV, will introduce the great themes of the Spiritual Exercises in a group setting during an Ignatian Preached Retreat, from May 9 to May 12, 2025. Palm Sunday and Easter TV Mass to air at special times

The televised Mass for the Homebound on Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025), and Easter Sunday (April 20 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour on both Sundays. Because of the length, the broadcast on these two Sundays will air at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 12 p.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on WFTX-TV (FOX-4). Two honored by Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County

Father Bob Kantor, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish in Naples, and Marty Gauthier, co-chair of the Catholic-Jewish Dialogue of Collier County, were honored by the Dialogue with the first-ever Power of Community Award, March 30, 2025. Gauthier and Father Kantor were recognized as Catholic-Jewish Dialogue Healers and Helpers (Tikkun Olam). The award was presented during a celebration at the Nini Iser Jewish Cultural Center and was created to recognize individuals for their years of unwavering dedication to the Jewish community of Greater Naples through fostering fellowship, demonstrating steadfast support, and collaborating on shared goals.

Local golfer participates in Masters Drive, Chip, and Putt contest

St. Joseph Catholic School student Tobias Gordic-Ronderos, 11, earned a spot in the Drive, Chip, and Putt contest at the Augusta National Golf Course on April 6, 2025. Augusta is home to the Masters, one of the four Major Tournaments in professional golf. Qualifying for this nationally televised event is an incredible accomplishment, having won a regional qualifier to earn his ticket to the national competition which was televised on the Golf Channel. Tobias, from Bradenton, finished tied for 7th overall, out of 10 competitors. While not the result he was hoping for, Tobias did earn the best score for putting in his age group. Well done, Tobias!

Experiment explores famous disaster

On May 3, 2025, in Fort Myers, science students at Bishop Verot Catholic High School learned about the 1937 Hindenburg zeppelin disaster in class exploring everything from its historical context to the various theories surrounding the cause of the explosion. Through a hands-on experiment, the students generated hydrogen gas, captured it in a balloon, and safely ignited it to simulate the Hindenburg disaster. This engaging approach allowed them to witness the reactions firsthand and apply their knowledge to propose their own theories about what might have happened. Learning history has never been so explosive.

Chrism Mass to be celebrated in Naples on April 15

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Bereavement Retreat for Hispanic parents

Deacon Roberto Landron is hosting a weekend Spanish-language retreat based on the Catholic faith to offer grieving parents a safe space of peace, comfort, and hope, as they form community with those who share their path. Two watch parties for Canonization of Carlo Acutis

In recognition of the canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint, two Parishes will host special events. Epiphany Cathedral, 350 Tampa Ave. W., Venice, will hold a special event beginning at 12:30 p.m., April 27, 2025, where participants can view sacred relics of St. Carlo Acutis and St. Faustina Kowalska, and watch a movie about Carlo’s life. The event begins with an Italian picnic and will include a special Holy Hour, including a Divine Mercy Chaplet and Eucharistic Adoration. All are welcome. St. Patrick Parish, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, will host a live watch party for the canonization at 4:30 a.m. April 27. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. The Parish will also display the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit (created by the new saint) in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 27, when a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration will begin.

On both days, several videos about the young Saint’s life will be shown throughout the exhibition. In addition, there will also be a signing station for a get-well card for Pope Francis, a prayer station for prayers to the Holy Father and to the newest saint, and a prayer wall to post intentions. The St. John Neumann Catholic High School band from Naples traveled to Orlando on March 14 – 15, 2025, to participate in Festival Disney, a prestigious student music competition bringing together talented young musicians from across the country. This festival provides an enriching and educational experience for concert bands, orchestras, and choirs at the middle school, high school, and college levels. The Neumann musicians performed exceptionally well, showcasing their dedication and musical talent. After their performance, they enjoyed some well-earned downtime exploring the theme park.

Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Port Charlotte

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Lenten Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on March 7, 2025, the First Friday of Lent. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to make an extra effort to live the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, almsgiving – to the best of their ability. The Bishop also reminded the students to increase their prayers during Lent so as to help them grow closer to the Lord.

Neumann wrestler wins state title

Lincoln Sledzianowski, a 132-pound wrestler at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, won the gold medal in his weight class at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, March 8, 2025. Two of his teammates also medaled. Benito Barnhart took silver in the 106-pound class, while Xavier Barnhart took the bronze in the 175-pound class. Well done to all of the wrestlers!

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal leaders meet Bishop

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocese of Venice Coordinator Maynor Ramirez and Deputy Coordinator Margarito Ronquillo met Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 3, 2025, at the Catholic Center in Venice. During the meeting, the pair presented the calendar of events and projects for this year 2025. Also present for the meeting was Jose Soto, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada and former Diocesan coordinator. Bishop Dewane gave his blessing at the events and prayed for the success of the Regional Congress to be held in the Diocese in the fall.

Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. One year of college/work is preferred, but mature recent high school graduates will be considered. Summer camps bring love of Christ to young faces

“Learned about Jesus!” “Learned about the Bible!” “Took part in fun and games at my Parish!” “Took a trip with friends from my Parish!” “God loves me, no matter what!” “I developed skills to help one day become an engineer!” “Gained a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary!” “Grew closer to the Lord!”

These are just some of the answers which children from across the Diocese of Venice offered to their friends and teachers when they returned to the classroom and were asked: “What did you do this summer?”

At nearly every Parish in the Diocese, there were captivating summer camps, with faith at their core. During these camps, thousands of children were engaged, and their young minds were, at least temporarily, focused on the Lord.

At 12 Parishes, the Diocese of Venice Department of Evangelization brought “Totus Tuus” camps for children and teens. This program was dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic Faith through evangelization, catechesis, Christian witness and Eucharistic worship. The camps were directed by a team of missionaries. Parish staff and volunteers augmented the team and together they made the week memorable for all who participated.

Vacation Bible School programs were also offered at 40 Parishes in the Diocese this summer. This weeklong Bible themed camp focused on learning the important lessons of Scripture in a fun and engaging way. The most common theme this summer was “Scuba: Diving into friendship with God.” At Vacation Bible School, children attended daily Mass and participated in Eucharistic Adoration. They also learned uplifting songs and dances, made crafts and generally had a great time.

Several Parishes also hosted summer activities for the teens, some included taking part in service projects, while others went on retreat, either locally or even out-of-state.

A dozen different Diocesan groups took part in Camp Covecrest 2024, a Life Teen retreat in northern Georgia which focuses on leading teens closer to Christ. This is an intensive retreat which focuses the teens on building their relationship with the Lord through team activities, reflection, and prayer. The focus of these retreats included Eucharistic Adoration, opportunities for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and participating in Mass.

In addition, at St. Michael Parish in Wauchula, the women religious of the Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, hosted three different summer camps, one each for young boys, young girls, and for teens. These camps included taking part in the Mass and rosary processions, as well as arts and crafts, games, and a visit to an area entertainment center.

Meanwhile, multiple Diocesan Catholic schools hosted STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) camps. Some of these camps covered several weeks and introduced the eager students to new projects such as arts and crafts, engineering various objects and other activities that incorporated the different aspects of STREAM. The longer camps stressed different skills and included field trips to augment the in-class experience. The camps actively incorporated Catholic values and virtues through the Diocesan curriculum called, “The Gifts of Christ: Truth, Beauty, Goodness, Affability, Fortitude, Humility, and Prudence.”

For the athlete in many of our young people, the area Catholic high schools hosted a variety of sports camps for soccer, football, basketball, cheerleading and many others. These camps offered a chance for younger children to learn the skills needed to excel in different sports while having fun with their peers.

These are just some of the examples of the exciting activities that took place for the thousands of young people in the Diocese during the “slow” season.
