Mooney Basketball Team Members receive their Championship rings, give glory to God

The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougar State Champion Basketball Team received their championship rings during a celebratory ceremony in the Patterson Gymnasium on June 19, 2025.

The team won its first Florida High School Athletic Association 3A Championship on March 1, at RP Funding Arena in Lakeland, defeating their nemesis, The Bolles School of Jacksonville, with final score of 64-54. The win, the first in Mooney history, was particularly sweet because it ended a four-game losing streak in the state championship game.

All of the past heartbreak faded away and became a mere distant memory as the young ladies were presented with their championship rings, a celebration of a great accomplishment on the court and the culmination of much hard work off the court.

Head Coach Marlon Williams, who received his own ring, said as a coach he wanted to bring a championship to Cardinal Mooney for the girls who work so hard each day.

“I’m so proud of them,” Coach Williams said. “To see these young ladies grow every day, it was a blessing to be a part of this.”

The large gold rings were emblazoned with the emblem of the Mooney Cougar and studded with small synthetic diamonds and rubies.

Sy’Monique Simon, one of the graduating senior captains on the team, said the ring was beautiful and heavy, but it represented something special for her and the other recent senior graduates who had endured three previous years of heartbreak. “Business is for sure finished,” she exclaimed.

Principal Ben Hopper said this final acknowledgement of the Cougars girls basketball team was important, noting how these athletes epitomize everything that Cardinal Mooney stands for, as young ladies and as people of Christ.

“For giving up their time and talent to the school and each other, we thank you for the commitment. What you have accomplished as a group truly is remarkable,” Hopper said, adding how their championship legacy will have a lasting impact on Cardinal Mooney for years to come, but most important on the young athletes.  “We celebrate your talents and accomplishments on the court, but also who you are as young ladies and as people of Christ.”

The opening prayers and blessing of rings were presided over by Deacon Jack Milholland, a Mooney graduate who serves at Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Lakewood Ranch. As part of the final blessing over the rings, Deacon Milholland prayed: “As they wear these rings, may they always be inspired to continue to live lives of virtue, integrity, and service, always striving for excellence in all they do and always give glory to your Holy Name. We ask you, Christ, Our Lord, Amen!”

All but a few of the team members were able to attend the ceremony, with some graduated seniors already off to college.

The 2025 State Championship Cougar Girls Basketball Teams are: Madi Mignery, Talia Busser, Sy’Monique Simon, Riley Martin, Avery Davis, Josie Maloni, Ava Bruno, Charlie Scibelli, Emily Wilson, Brielle Buckley, Lailani Washington, Kali Barrett, London Guy, and Mishyah Rumph.

Others receiving rings were assistant coaches Quinton Swader and Cortney Sawyer, Athletic Director Rafael Fernandez, Athletic Trainer Megan Peters, and Principal Hopper.

Four weeks remain in Totus Tuus summer program

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The week-long program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first two weeks, the program has taken place at six Parishes, with the most recent at St. Agnes in Naples. Upcoming host Parishes include: Ave Maria in Ave Maria and St. Jude in Sarasota (June 22-27); St. Cecilia, Fort Myers; Our Lady of Light, Fort Myers; St. John XXIII, Fort Myers; St. Thomas More, Sarasota (July 6-11); St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Fort Myers coach leading USA baseball team

Casey Scott, a baseball head coach at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, has been selected as manager of the USA Baseball 15U National Team. Scott just finished his sixth season as head coach at Bishop Verot, leading the team to a State Final Four for the second consecutive season. During the summers of 2023 and 2024, Scott served as pitching coach for the USA Baseball 15U National Team.

Independence Day bike and golf cart parade to be held in Ave Maria

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 3862 of Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria is hosting is 9th annual “God Bless America: Independence Day Bike and Golf Cart Parade.” The opening ceremony will take place in the Piazza in front of Ave Maria Parish church with the parade, led by fire trucks, immediately following. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, golf carts, skateboards, and strollers. The route is approximately 2 miles long, but a shorter route, around the church, is available for younger riders. Light refreshments, including birthday cake for the Nation, will be available at the conclusion of the parade.

Children Throughout the World Need Our Help! 

The Administration is terminating all but two of Catholic Relief Services’ school feeding programs, eliminating a daily school meal for close to 800,000 children in 11 countries beginning in July. For many, this was their only meal of the day.  These terminations aren’t just broken agreements with CRS. Ordination to the Priesthood July 12

Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites the faithful to the Ordination to the Priesthood of Transitional Deacons Joseph Doherty, Jacob Gwynn and Pat Long. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Bishop Verot baseball team falls in state semifinals

The Bishop Verot Catholic High School baseball team from Fort Myers fell in the state class 3A semifinals on May 19, 2025, at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers to Miami Springs. The team won the 3A regionals to reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year after beating Calvary Christian in a best of three series. The Vikings finished the season with an impressive 32-3 record, a school record, and have been ranked as high as 11th in the nation.

St. Martha Catholic Schools unveils new mascot

The new Knight Mascot for St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota was introduced during a Pep Rally on May 15, 2025. The rally also included a celebration and recognition of all of the school clubs and sports teams.

Totus Tuus Summer Catechetical Camp

The Totus Tuus one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camp program, for students entering grades 1-12, aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life. In 2022, the Diocese of Venice launched its pilot program, with great success. The program has continued and expanded each year and will be offered at 18 Parishes throughout the Diocese this summer, between June 1 and July 25, 2025. The following is a list of host Parishes:

Catholic schools’ track and field athletes excel at States

Student athletes from three Diocese of Venice Catholic high schools recently competed at the Florida High School Athletic Association State Championships on May 9 and 10, 2025, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Ryan Peterson, a senior from Bishop Verot Catholic School in Fort Myers, is the discus class 2a State Champion with a throw of 52.48 meters (172-feet 2-inches). Ryan also placed seventh in the shot put, earning a second medal.

Bishop Verot sent 20 athletes to the State Championships, with the following also medaling: Elise Bolgiano, who took third in the high jump, at 1.57 meters (5-feet 1¾-inches); Zachary Zielke, third in 3200 with a time of 9:22.27, and eighth in the 1600; Jyden German was third in the 100, with a time of 10.90; Jadrien Carmo was third in the 400, with a time of 47.97; Andrew Marino was fifth in the 1600; and James Little IV was eighth in the 110 hurdles. Overall, the Verot boys team combined to finish seventh out of 49 teams.

At the same competition, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota entered seven athletes. The top performer was Zoe Kirby who medaled by finishing seventh in the javelin. She also participated in the shot put and discus.

St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples sent nine athletes to the class 1a State Championship which was contested on May 10. Top performers were: Grace London, who finished third in the javelin with a throw on 36.73 meters (120-feet 6-inches); Mylee Van de Wouw finished eighth in the long jump; and Mason Armstrong finished eighth in the shot put.

Meanwhile, the Bishop Verot boys baseball team is in the State Final Four May 19 against Miami Springs, at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. To earn the right to play in the Final Four, the Vikings earned their second consecutive 3a regional championship on May 8, clinching the deciding game in the best of three series in extra innings.

Two from Mooney receive accolades for basketball success

The star player and head coach of the State Championship Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougars, who won the FHSAA 3A Championship on March 1, 2025, have both received top honors for their success this year. Senior Kali Barrett was voted the Florida Dairy Farmer 2025 3A Girls Basketball Player of the Year, while Head Coach Marlon Williams was named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2025 Class 3A Girls Basketball Coach of the Year. The Lady Cougars won the first State Championship in school history in March with a 27-9 record, finishing on a 17-game winning streak after starting the season 7-9. The program is rooted in hard work, discipline, and in the heart – and it showed every step of the way. Congratulations Kali and Coach Williams!

Students collect food for local community

Students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers completed a service project for Lent that included collecting peanut butter and jelly for the Community Cooperative, a soup kitchen and food bank. Students collected an astounding 1,400 jars, packing up and delivering them on April 16, 2025. This is a great example of how Catholic school students live out their Catholic values through service and generosity.

 

Theology on Tap May 15 in Sarasota

Calling all young adults! Come enjoy an evening of faith, fellowship and fun at Theology on Tap on the third Thursday of every month. The May 15, 2025, gathering will feature a talk by Father Leland Thorpe, OMV, who assists at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. The talk is titled “Behold Your Mother: Thoughts on Mary in Mary’s Month.” Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting. St. Mary Academy Golf Tournament May 18

St. Mary Academy is hosting their 12th Annual Golf Tournament with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., May 18, 2025, at University Park Country Club, 7671 The Park Blvd, Sarasota. This is a best-ball tournament, and the cost is $150 per player. Participants will receive a goody bag, drinks, snacks, prizes, awards, and a sit-down BBQ dinner buffet. The event supports St. Mary Academy, which educates students with special learning needs. Apply NOW to be a Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionary

Time is running out to apply to become a Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionary. The deadline to apply is May 8. Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. One year of college/work is preferred, but mature recent high school graduates will be considered. This is a great summer experience for anyone who wants to work in ministry, education, or with children in other settings. Palm Sunday opens Holy Week

Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord (April 13, 2025) brought the faithful together as the Lenten Season nears a close (Holy Thursday). This is the day we remember and honor Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, greeted by cheering crowds waving palm branches that they set out on the ground along his path, before his crucifixion on Good Friday.  As is tradition, the faithful received palms upon entering church, which were then blessed by the presiding priest. During this Mass, the Passion of the Lord from the Gospel of Luke was read.

 Easter TV Mass to air at special time

The Televised Mass for the Homebound on Easter Sunday (April 20 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 12 p.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on WFTX-TV (FOX-4). Please check your cable provider for channel listings or visit www.dioceseofvenice.org/tvmass.

Jubilee Youth Pilgrimage April 26

Join with the young people of the Diocese of Venice on Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 9 a.m. 1 p.m. for a special Jubilee Year Youth Pilgrimage to the DeSoto Eucharistic Monument in Bradenton, 8250 DeSoto Memorial Highway. The pilgrimage will be a day of prayer, reflection, adoration and celebration of the Eucharist in the context of the Jubilee Year 2025. Inspired by the theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” this event invites youth to grow in their faith, embrace renewal, and strengthen their commitment to Christ. Eastern Deanery youth soccer tournament a success

St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted an Eastern Deanery Youth Soccer Tournament on April 12, 2025. Five Parishes were represented, including St. Michael, St. James in Lake Placid, St. Catherine in Sebring, Our Lady of Grace in Avon Parish, and St. Paul in Arcadia. The finals pitted St. Michael versus St. Paul, with the Arcadia team taking home the championship with a final score of 2-1.

Verot weightlifter wins state title

Justin Davis, a senior weightlifter at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers won a Florida High School Athletic Association Olympic Class 1A Championship in the 183-pound weight class on April 12, 2025, in Lakeland. Justin lifted a combined 515 pounds to take the gold medal.

Theology on Tap April 24

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. The evening begins with food and refreshments at 7 p.m. Presentations and discussions about the Catholic Faith begin at 8 p.m. The next presentation will be by Father Christian Chami, Parochial Vicar at St. Jude Parish in Sarasota, and the title of his talk is “St. Charbel: Lessons in silence, faith, and obedience.” Please email Andres Prias at prias@dioceseofvenice.org for more information.

Divine Mercy commemoration in Naples

St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples, is hosting a two-part commemoration of Divine Mercy Sunday. First, the Parish will host a presentation on April 25, 2025, following the 8:30 a.m. Mass, by Sister Teresa de la Fuente, OLM, a member St. Faustina Kowalska, the founder of Divine Mercy Sunday. The theme for the presentation, which will follow a light breakfast reception, is, “Draw Water Joyfully from the Founts of Mercy.” On Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, an additional commemoration begins at 2:30 p.m. and will include the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, Mass, a procession and veneration of the Divine Mercy image and first-class relic of St. Faustina. Two special events for Canonization of Carlo Acutis

In recognition of the canonization of Carlo Acutis, the first millennial saint, two Parishes will host special events. St. Patrick Parish, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, will host a live watch party for the canonization at 4:30 a.m. April 27. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. The Parish will also display the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit (created by the new saint) in the Parish Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. April 26, and from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 27, when a Divine Mercy Sunday celebration will begin. On both days, several videos about the young Saint’s life will be shown throughout the exhibition. In addition, there will be a signing station for a get-well card for Pope Francis, a prayer station for prayers to the Holy Father and to the newest saint, and a prayer wall to post intentions. The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Sarasota

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota on March 13, 2025. This was the latest in a series of Masses Bishop Dewane celebrates throughout the Lenten Season at Diocese of Venice Catholic Schools. Following the Mass, the Bishop spoke to the eighth graders, urging them to finish the Lenten Season strong as they strive to grow closer to the Lord. The Bishop also encouraged the students to continue their education at nearby Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. The eighth graders were also allowed to ask the Bishop any question before a group photo was taken.

Verot soccer player earns high honor

Caroline Pelkofski, a senior soccer player at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers was named the Florida Dairy Farmers – Girls Soccer FHSAA Class 3A Player of the Year! This season, Caroline scored 20 goals and added 22 assists in leading her squad to a 15-3-1 record and a Region 3A-3 Final. She is now eligible for the athlete-of-the-year award. She will continue playing soccer at the University of South Florida. Congratulations Caroline!

St. Ann Catholic School students showed off their Irish pride when they participated in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Naples on March 15, 2025. Faculty, families and students came together to celebrate with smiles, spirit, and lots of Irish pride.

HOPE Gala a huge success

The inaugural HOPE Gala at St. William Parish in Naples was a huge success on March 8, 2025. The Gala raised funds for the HOPE (Homeless Outreach Program for Empowerment) outreach of St. William Parish. The program is dedicated to helping the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Naples. Through partnerships with Catholic Charities and other local organizations, the program provides essential resources such as food, clothing, casework support, and pathways to better life, ensuring that those in need receive both immediate relief and long-term assistance.

Verot Regency Garden Gala wows

An unforgettable night took place on March 15, 2025, at the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Regency Garden Gala which took place in Bonita Springs. It was a beautiful evening filled with elegance, joy, and Viking spirit. Bishop Frank J. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Port Charlotte

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Lenten Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on March 7, 2025, the First Friday of Lent. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to make an extra effort to live the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, almsgiving – to the best of their ability. The Bishop also reminded the students to increase their prayers during Lent so as to help them grow closer to the Lord.

Neumann wrestler wins state title

Lincoln Sledzianowski, a 132-pound wrestler at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, won the gold medal in his weight class at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, March 8, 2025. Two of his teammates also medaled. Benito Barnhart took silver in the 106-pound class, while Xavier Barnhart took the bronze in the 175-pound class. Well done to all of the wrestlers!

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal leaders meet Bishop

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocese of Venice Coordinator Maynor Ramirez and Deputy Coordinator Margarito Ronquillo met Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 3, 2025, at the Catholic Center in Venice. During the meeting, the pair presented the calendar of events and projects for this year 2025. Also present for the meeting was Jose Soto, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada and former Diocesan coordinator. Bishop Dewane gave his blessing at the events and prayed for the success of the Regional Congress to be held in the Diocese in the fall.

Mooney girls win first State Championship

History was made on March 1, 2025, when the Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougar basketball team won its first Florida High School Athletic Association 3A Championship in Lakeland.

The 64-54 victory for the Sarasota team was extra sweet as it came after the team fell short in the State Finals during the previous four years. Adding to the joy, the win was over The Bolles School of Jacksonville, a team that beat the Lady Cougars in the State Championship Games three times in the past five years.

The Lady Cougars were led by senior captain Kali Barrett who had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Madi Mignery had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sy’Monique Simon added 11 points. The team finished the season with a 24-9 record, finishing on a 17-game winning streak after starting the season 7-9.

Kali Barrett said to reporters after the win, “Amazing! I’ve been here four times in a row now. It showed how hard work paid off – the early mornings, the late nights – staying in it to the end.”

Madi Mignery said it is an amazing platform to play at Cardinal Mooney. “This is the best feeling – we worked so hard for this, and to get it done means everything to me.”

A large crowd from Cardinal Mooney travelled to Lakeland to witness history.

Meanwhile, the game fell on the same night as the Mooney “Gratia Gala” at the Westin in Sarasota. Mooney supporters, including Bishop Frank J. Dewane, watched a live stream of the game during the Gala cocktail hour, cheering on the team to victory. The Gala was a huge success in support of planned renovations to the Selby Center.

The team earned the right to play in the State Final by winning the State Semifinal game on Feb. 28, 65-52 over Sports Leadership & Management (SLAM) of Miami.

Before the team headed to the State Semifinal game, the players made a visit to St. Martha Catholic School and St. Mary Academy where students lined the driveway to cheer on the players.

Cardinal Mooney held its own rally for the players the night before heading to Lakeland. Before travelling to Lakeland for the Semi Final game on the morning of Feb. 28, Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocese of Venice Superintendent of Catholic Education, celebrated Mass for the team.

Two Mooney students receive special academic honors

Two seniors at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School have received recognition for their academic prowess with national honors.

Sy’Monique Simon has been named a National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship National Semifinalist, the first Mooney student to be so recognized in 21 years. Hunter Fiskness has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

One of only 575 NHS national semifinalists, Sy’Monique earned a $3,200 scholarship. She earned the honor through a dedication to scholarship, service, leadership, and character, being a shining example for our community. A star basketball player, Sy’Monique played a pivotal role in the team’s success, helping them to reach the State Championship for the past three years.

Hunter’s honor places him among the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors. As a National Merit Finalist, he has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million. The process to become a Finalist included submitting a detailed application with information about academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, as well as honors and awards received.
