Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Sarasota

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for students at Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota on March 13, 2025. This was the latest in a series of Masses Bishop Dewane celebrates throughout the Lenten Season at Diocese of Venice Catholic Schools. Following the Mass, the Bishop spoke to the eighth graders, urging them to finish the Lenten Season strong as they strive to grow closer to the Lord. The Bishop also encouraged the students to continue their education at nearby Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School. The eighth graders were also allowed to ask the Bishop any question before a group photo was taken.

Verot soccer player earns high honor

Caroline Pelkofski, a senior soccer player at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers was named the Florida Dairy Farmers – Girls Soccer FHSAA Class 3A Player of the Year! This season, Caroline scored 20 goals and added 22 assists in leading her squad to a 15-3-1 record and a Region 3A-3 Final. She is now eligible for the athlete-of-the-year award. She will continue playing soccer at the University of South Florida. Congratulations Caroline!

Students in Naples participate in St. Patrick’s Day Parade

St. Ann Catholic School students showed off their Irish pride when they participated in the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Naples on March 15, 2025. Faculty, families and students came together to celebrate with smiles, spirit, and lots of Irish pride.

HOPE Gala a huge success

The inaugural HOPE Gala at St. William Parish in Naples was a huge success on March 8, 2025. The Gala raised funds for the HOPE (Homeless Outreach Program for Empowerment) outreach of St. William Parish. The program is dedicated to helping the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in Naples. Through partnerships with Catholic Charities and other local organizations, the program provides essential resources such as food, clothing, casework support, and pathways to better life, ensuring that those in need receive both immediate relief and long-term assistance.

Verot Regency Garden Gala wows

An unforgettable night took place on March 15, 2025, at the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Regency Garden Gala which took place in Bonita Springs. It was a beautiful evening filled with elegance, joy, and Viking spirit. Bishop Frank J. Dewane offered a prayer before the meal and praised the community for helping to make Bishop Verot a shining example of Catholic Education in Lee County.

Emerald Ball March 26 in Naples

The Catholic Charities Emerald Ball is 5:30 p.m., March 26, 2025, at the Ritz-Carlton Tiburon Golf Resort, 2600 Tiburon Drive, Naples. This year’s theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” inspired by Pope Francis in honor of the Jubilee Year, reflects Catholic Charities’ commitment to providing help and hope to all individuals, regardless of race, nationality, or religion. Witnessing Faith with Bishop Dewane on Relevant Radio March 28

Join Bishop Frank J. Dewane for his monthly radio program on Relevant Radio on 106.7 FM and 1410 AM in Fort Myers and 93.3 FM and 1660 AM in Naples. Witnessing Faith with Bishop Dewane can be heard at 8:30 a.m. on the last Friday of every month, or anytime at dioceseofvenice.org/ourbishop. The next episode will air on March 28, 2025, and features a discussion about the February Eucharistic Pilgrimage held in the eastern part of the Diocese, the March 29 Diocesan Eucharistic Conference in Punta Gorda and the ongoing Jubilee Year of Hope. Sarasota Parish Lenten Mission March 30 to April 3

St. Jude Parish, 3930 17th Street, Sarasota, is hosting a 5-day Parish Lenten Mission from March 30, 2025, through April 3. 40 Days for Life Spring Campaign through April 13

The 40 days for Life Spring Campaign (from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025) aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion businesses. Easter Triduum Retreat at OLPH

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, will host its annual Easter Triduum Retreat, April 17-20, 2025. Chrism Mass to be celebrated in Naples on April 15

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Divine Mercy Service in Fort Myers April 24

Our Lady of Light Parish, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers, will be hosting its annual Divine Mercy Sunday service on April 24, 2025. The prayer service opens with Adoration followed by Benediction from 1 p.m. – 2:15 p.m., to allow faithful time in the Presence of the Blessed Sacrament and the Divine Mercy Image. Weekend bereavement retreat for parents in May

The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. The retreat will take place May 2-4, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Facilitated by Deacon Henry deMena, M.A., an experienced grief counselor, this retreat offers a supportive environment for healing through prayer, reflection, and shared experiences. Ignatian Preached Silent Retreat in May

Father Greg Cleveland, OMV, will introduce the great themes of the Spiritual Exercises in a group setting during an Ignatian Preached Retreat, from May 9 to May 12, 2025. The schedule includes conferences each day, daily Mass, and an opportunity to meet at least once with the retreat director for Confession and/or spiritual direction. Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. As part of the Safe Environment Program, the Diocese of Venice requires that all employees and those volunteers who work with children and/or vulnerable adults be fingerprinted and complete online training in Safe Environment prior to beginning employment or volunteering. Bishop celebrates Mass for students in Port Charlotte

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated a Lenten Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on March 7, 2025, the First Friday of Lent. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to make an extra effort to live the three pillars of Lent – prayer, fasting, almsgiving – to the best of their ability. The Bishop also reminded the students to increase their prayers during Lent so as to help them grow closer to the Lord.

Neumann wrestler wins state title

Lincoln Sledzianowski, a 132-pound wrestler at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, won the gold medal in his weight class at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship in Kissimmee, March 8, 2025. Two of his teammates also medaled. Benito Barnhart took silver in the 106-pound class, while Xavier Barnhart took the bronze in the 175-pound class. Well done to all of the wrestlers!

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal leaders meet Bishop

Spanish Catholic Charismatic Renewal Diocese of Venice Coordinator Maynor Ramirez and Deputy Coordinator Margarito Ronquillo met Bishop Frank J. Dewane on March 3, 2025, at the Catholic Center in Venice. During the meeting, the pair presented the calendar of events and projects for this year 2025. Also present for the meeting was Jose Soto, National Coordinator of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal of the United States and Canada and former Diocesan coordinator. Bishop Dewane gave his blessing at the events and prayed for the success of the Regional Congress to be held in the Diocese in the fall.

Theology on Tap Sarasota on March 20

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed and social setting at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. The Office of Youth and Young Adult Outreach is offering Youth Jubilee Adoration Nights as part of the Jubilee Year 2025. The third Diocese of Venice Eucharistic Conference will take place Saturday, March 29, at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center in Punta Gorda. The theme for the day-long event is inspired by the Jubilee Year 2025 while also building upon the three-year National Eucharistic Revival. The theme for the Conference is “Becoming Eucharistic Missionaries,” and it offers an opportunity to celebrate the Catholic faith with others. The Diocesan Eucharistic Conference will feature Mass celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane. There will also be dynamic presentations by nationally renowned Catholic speakers, with the keynote given by Dr. Scott Hahn, a theologian and Catholic apologist, who has written numerous books. Mooney girls win first State Championship

History was made on March 1, 2025, when the Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougar basketball team won its first Florida High School Athletic Association 3A Championship in Lakeland.

The 64-54 victory for the Sarasota team was extra sweet as it came after the team fell short in the State Finals during the previous four years. Adding to the joy, the win was over The Bolles School of Jacksonville, a team that beat the Lady Cougars in the State Championship Games three times in the past five years.

The Lady Cougars were led by senior captain Kali Barrett who had 20 points and 11 rebounds, while sophomore Madi Mignery had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sy’Monique Simon added 11 points. The team finished the season with a 24-9 record, finishing on a 17-game winning streak after starting the season 7-9.

Kali Barrett said to reporters after the win, “Amazing! I’ve been here four times in a row now. It showed how hard work paid off – the early mornings, the late nights – staying in it to the end.”

Madi Mignery said it is an amazing platform to play at Cardinal Mooney. “This is the best feeling – we worked so hard for this, and to get it done means everything to me.”

A large crowd from Cardinal Mooney travelled to Lakeland to witness history.

Meanwhile, the game fell on the same night as the Mooney “Gratia Gala” at the Westin in Sarasota. Mooney supporters, including Bishop Frank J. Dewane, watched a live stream of the game during the Gala cocktail hour, cheering on the team to victory. The Gala was a huge success in support of planned renovations to the Selby Center.

The team earned the right to play in the State Final by winning the State Semifinal game on Feb. 28, 65-52 over Sports Leadership & Management (SLAM) of Miami.

Before the team headed to the State Semifinal game, the players made a visit to St. Martha Catholic School and St. Mary Academy where students lined the driveway to cheer on the players.

Cardinal Mooney held its own rally for the players the night before heading to Lakeland. Before travelling to Lakeland for the Semi Final game on the morning of Feb. 28, Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocese of Venice Superintendent of Catholic Education, celebrated Mass for the team.

Two Mooney students receive special academic honors

Two seniors at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School have received recognition for their academic prowess with national honors.

Sy’Monique Simon has been named a National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship National Semifinalist, the first Mooney student to be so recognized in 21 years. Hunter Fiskness has been named a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

One of only 575 NHS national semifinalists, Sy’Monique earned a $3,200 scholarship. She earned the honor through a dedication to scholarship, service, leadership, and character, being a shining example for our community. A star basketball player, Sy’Monique played a pivotal role in the team’s success, helping them to reach the State Championship for the past three years.

Hunter’s honor places him among the top one percent of U.S. high school seniors. As a National Merit Finalist, he has an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million. The process to become a Finalist included submitting a detailed application with information about academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, as well as honors and awards received.

Seminarians experience snow in Massachusetts

Several Diocese of Venice seminarians experienced snow for the first time while studying at Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts. About six inches of snow fell on Jan. 19, 2025, and seminarians Alex Baugh, Terry Gastauer, Pat Long, and Brian (Bao) Nguyen, tried sledding on the campus hills, with varying degrees of success, but nonetheless enjoyed this opportunity.

Verot soccer teams finish regular season undefeated

Congratulations to the girls and boys soccer teams at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers for both teams finishing the regular season with an undefeated record. According to state records, Bishop Verot is the only school in the state which has both boys and girls soccer teams with UNDEFEATED regular seasons! The girls finished with a record of 13-0-1, and the boys 10-0-5. Next up will be the postseason.

Catholic Days at the Capitol deadline Feb. 18

Join others from around the state for the annual Catholic Days at the Capitol in Tallahassee from March 18-20. The three-day trip includes a legislative briefing on important bills relating to human life and dignity, a breakfast with legislators and the Florida Bishops, tours of the capitol and museum, scheduled visits with legislators and the annual Red Mass of the Holy Spirit with the Florida Bishops and public officials. Milestone Anniversary Masses Feb. 1 and March 8

All couples celebrating 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, or more than 50 years of marriage are invited by Bishop Frank J. Dewane to an Anniversary Mass in their honor. The Diocese hosts two Anniversary Masses each year (one in the northern part of the Diocese and the second in the southern part) to accommodate the demand. The first Mass is at 11 a.m., Feb. 1, 2025, at St. Leo the Great Parish, 28290 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs. The second Mass is at 11 a.m., March 8, 2025, at St. Thomas More Parish, 2506 Gulf Gate Drive, Sarasota. A luncheon follows each Mass. “Invite One Back” Training Feb. 8 in Arcadia

Learn how to invite others back to Mass in a non-confrontational way Saturday, February 8 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul Parish Hall, 1330 E. Oak St, Arcadia. This one-day workshop will teach participants person-to-person evangelization and is co-sponsored by the Diocese of Venice and St. Paul Street Evangelization (SPSE). Vocation Awareness Weekend in March

Malta Camp USA registration open

Malta Camp USA, inspired by the Order of Malta’s charism, is a unique 5-day experience for adults with disabilities. The camp is free, and will be offered this summer from June 22-27, 2025, at Siena College in Loudonville, New York (outside of Saratoga). Primarily designed for those 21-40 years of age, Malta Camp participants have an opportunity to feel independent, enjoy new experiences, and make new friends. Two religious priests die

The Diocese of Venice is saddened by the passing of two religious priests on Dec. 27, 2024. Father Marcel George Dubé, O. Carm., was 95, and Father Michael Vogt, O.S.F.S., was 66. Father Dubé was ordained to the priesthood on May 29, 1954, as a member of the Order of Carmelite. For the Diocese of Venice, Father Dubé served as Parochial Vicar at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Grove City from 2001 until his retirement in 2012. In retirement, Father resided at the Carmel at Mission Valley in Nokomis and assisted at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Osprey and St. Michael the Archangel Parish in Sarasota. A Funeral Mass will be held Jan. 16, 2025, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish. Father Vogt was ordained to the priesthood on Jan. 27, 2012, as a member of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales. For the Diocese of Venice, Father Vogt served a Parochial Vicar at St. Ann Parish in Naples from 2019 to 2021 and had recently returned to assist at the Parish. A Mass of Christan Burial for Father Vogt was celebrated Jan. 7, 2024, in Childs, Maryland. A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Jan. 9, 2024, at St. Ann Parish. Please pray for the repose of the souls of Father Dubé and Father Vogt and the consolation of their families. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.

Bishop speaks at Theology on Tap

The speaker for the Dec. 19, 2024, gathering of the Theology on Tap in Sarasota was Bishop Frank J. Dewane. Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed and social setting at the Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, Sarasota. The evening begins with food and refreshments and presentations, and discussions about the Catholic Faith. Bishop Dewane spoke the document from Pope Francis (Spes non confundit) on hope. In addition, he spoke about the waning days of Advent in preparation for Christmas while sharing his thoughts on the Catholic Church within the Diocese of Venice before answering a wide variety of questions. Verot basketball player reaches career milestone

Jerry Ashley, a senior forward on the Bishop Verot Catholic High School Boys’s Basketball Team, scored his 1,000^th career point on Dec. 30, 2024, during Holiday Hoopfest Championship Game in Fort Myers. Congratulations Jerry!

Student recognized for artwork

Natalia Lesniewski, a sixth-grade student at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota, was formally recognized by her school on Dec. 20, 2024, for earning the grand prize at the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) Christmas Artwork Contest. The congratulatory ceremony took place following Mass on the last day before the Christmas break and included Alixandra Holden, National Director of the Missionary Childhood Association, who presented Natalia with a commemorative plaque. Her proud parents were also present for the ceremony. Natalia learned of the win several months prior. Her art, and that of the 17 top artists from across the county was on display throughout the Advent and Christmas Seasons at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. In addition, Natalia’s art, and that of the other grand prize winner, was featured on the official Christmas cards of The Pontifical Mission Societies, which were sent to hundreds of people, including Pope Francis.

Parish celebrates Epiphany with parade

St. Elizabeth Seton Parish in Naples had a parade to celebrate Epiphany of Lord on Jan. 5, 2025, the commemoration of the worship of Jesus by the Magi and God’s revelation to the nations. The celebration followed Mass, and consisted of a small parade of the three kings with their camels as they followed the star. The three kings then presented their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh and paid their homage to the Christ Child. The celebration concluded with a solemn Epiphany blessing from the Pastor, Father Casey Jones.

Haitian Independence Mass

Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites all to participate in the Annual Mass celebrating the 221st Anniversary of Haitian Independence on Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025, at St. Leo the Great Parish, Parish Life Center, 28290 Beaumont Road, Bonita Springs. The 2 p.m. Mass, which takes place on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, brings together the various Haitian communities within the Diocese of Venice for one celebration. Bishop Dewane and priests serving the Haitian Catholic community of the Diocese will welcome Most. Rev. Thomas Wenski, Archbishop of Miami, who will be the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. WARNING – Text/Email SCAM Alert

It has once again been brought to the attention of the Diocese of Venice that parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. These messages, which are more frequent during the Christmas Season, often come from text/emails that look similar to official Diocesan/Parish/school numbers or accounts and often greet the recipient by name and have the priest’s, Bishop’s, or staff member’s name in the “From” line and/or closing signature of the message. The SPAM often claims that the priest/Bishop/staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. The message then asks the person to purchase gift cards/money and then to text/email the redemption code and PIN number. It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc. Without this awareness, some have responded to the spoofed messages, with consequences, including loss of funds. There is an established process in place on how parishioners can make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a SCAM text or email, please immediately contact the Diocesan/Parish/school directly!

Students create Advent posters

Fourth grade students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers made interactive Advent posters. The posters included the four candles, with the words: “Hope,” “Peace,” “Joy,” and “Love.” Three of the candles are purple with the “Joy” candle a rose color for “Gaudete Sunday.” Each week of Advent, the students added a “flame” to the top of the corresponding candle. The lesson for the students is that Advent is a time to prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas.

Students honored for patriotic essays

Six St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic School students in Naples were honored by the Collier and Lee County VFWs on December 14, 2024, for their outstanding Patriot’s Pen essays on, “How do you use your voice for America’s democracy?” Three additional students were also recognized, as well as Seton’s own Dana Hilmoe being named Elementary Teacher of the Year. The ceremony, presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and other dignitaries, highlighted the students’ exceptional ability to connect history with life in America today. Their insights and reflections were truly inspiring, offering hope and confidence in our future leaders.

Thanksgiving across the Diocese 2024

The idea of giving thanks, knowing that we are here because of gifts given to us by God, is at the core of what Thanksgiving is all about.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane described the holiday this way while celebrating Mass at Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Lakewood Ranch on Nov. 28, 2024.

As hard as we try, Bishop Dewane added, “being who God called us to be is difficult, and we will fail along the way. But, the Bible records the wonderful gifts of God, which we can find within ourselves and in others who are all made in the image and likeness of God.”

The Gospel reading of the day (Luke 17:11-19) was the parable of the 10 lepers, when only one returned to thank Jesus upon being cured of the debilitating illness. Jesus asks where the other nine were. Bishop Dewane stressed how we are all among the missing nine at certain points in our life, but we must always strive to be among the ones who return.

“By your presence at Mass on Thanksgiving, you are counted among those who returned to Jesus, just as you came to give thanks to God today. Know the Lord sees the goodness in you and thanks you,” Bishop Dewane said.

Meanwhile, Bishop Dewane went from the Mass in Lakewood Ranch to take part in a free community Thanksgiving dinner hosted by the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of Victory Council 3358 at their Hall on Fruitville Road in Sarasota.

The Knights delivered more than 200 meals to the elderly and homebound and then served hundreds more meals to those who needed a hot meal or didn’t have anywhere to go for the holiday. Guests were also encouraged to take meals home. Those meals included turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, corn, stuffing, cranberry sauce, roll, and pumpkin or apple pie with whipped cream.

Bishop Dewane offered the opening prayer for the Knights and other volunteers before the dining room was opened. Then, the Bishop took his traditional spot in charge of serving the corn on a buffet line in the dining room and assisted with the mashed potatoes and gravy as needed. The dining format was a change from previous years of table service which allowed guests to opt in or out on their favorite foods and return for seconds.

Being grateful for what they have was a strong theme during Traditional Thanksgiving activities throughout the Diocese of Venice.

Multiple faiths on Longboat Key came together for the 44^th annual interreligious Thanksgiving Worship Service on Nov. 19. Included was Father Robert Dziedziak. Pastor of Our Lady, Star of the Sea Parish. The service and gathering took on a special meaning of healing for the island community which was inundated by storm surge and devastated during Hurricanes Helene and Milton.

At several locations throughout the Diocese, turkey giveaways were common. Catholic Charities volunteers provided a hot holiday meal to the homeless on Nov. 26, at the Judy Sullivan Family resource Center in Naples.

At St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples, Pastor Father Gerard Critch started the Parish Thanksgiving dinner more than 10 years ago to ensure “no one will spend Thanksgiving alone.” Following a trilingual Mass (English, Spanish, Creole), the annual dinner served hundreds.

For those watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York, 14 senior cheerleaders from Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers were part of the Spirit of America cheer team. This was the 10th year in a row a group of cheerleaders from Bishop Verot has received this high honor.

Ahead of the Thanksgiving break, young students at several Diocesan Catholic schools had the opportunity to participate in their own local “Macy’s” parade, with the youngest students dressing up as characters and carrying balloons with some creating floats.

First grade students at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton recently used their math skills to complete Thanksgiving themed STREAM (science, technology, religion, engineering, arts and math) games and worksheets. One of the activities included measuring how tall they were compared to the average turkey.

Another holiday tradition takes place at Bishop Verot Catholic High School. Coach Mike Gill’s talented woodshop students crafted wooden turkeys, hand-made treasures for their families that are not only a test of skill but a festive addition to any holiday table. Many alumni of Verot still display their wooden turkey from decades ago.

Gratitude for the many blessings enjoyed by the Diocese of Venice was widespread, and heartfelt!

Mooney football falls in the State Semifinals

The dreams of another state championship for Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Cougar Football Team from Sarasota came to an end with a Florida State High School Athletic Association 2A State Semifinal home loss on Dec. 6, 2024.

The Cougars who were 2023 Florida State High School Athletic Association 1S State Champs, fell 31-21 to Cocoa High School from Brevard County. Cocoa has a high-powered offense and is heading to its fourth consecutive appearance in the state championship game.

The home crowd continued to cheer for the team, even after the loss, for the many achievements the players and coaches had reached, even if they were short of their ultimate goal of winning another title. The team finished the season with a 12-1 record and had an 18-game overall winning streak, including the state title, dating to September 2023. Previously, Cougar football teams only made it this far in the playoffs a few times, earning a state title in 1972 and the semifinals in 2006.

Although the season ended in disappointment, reaching the State Semifinals is no small accomplishment. What made the run more impressive was that many from the 2023 state championship had graduated and this current team was led all year by a strong defense and dynamic offense filled with underclassmen.

The Cougar offense was led by junior quarterback Devin Mignery and sophomore running back Connail Jackson. Jackson rushed for an average of 128.8 yards per game for a total of 1,545 yards. He finished the season with 29 total touchdowns.

To make the State Semifinal game, Cardinal Mooney defeated archrival Bishop Verot Catholic High School of Fort Myers on Nov. 29, 2024, in Sarasota, the day after Thanksgiving in the Class 2A-Region 3 championship. Both teams held Thanksgiving Day public workouts on their home field ahead of the rivalry game.

Cardinal Mooney took the game 35-14 even though Cougar running back Jackson left the game with an injury in the first quarter. Mooney also beat Verot 49-28 during the regular season in September and leads the overall series 24-22.

With many young players returning for 2025 season, the Cougar Football Team has a bright future ahead. Congratulations on a great 2024 season!

Diocesan Catholic high schools shine at States – Verot cross country State Champs

The following is a recap of sports achievements by athletes of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Venice:

Bishop Verot runners take state title

For the first time in history, the Bishop Verot Catholic High School boy’s cross country team won a FSHAA 2A State Championship on Nov. 15, 2024, at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

The Viking boys from Fort Myers dethroned the four-time defending state champions with the top five Verot runners combining their time of 1:22:07.50, to earn 65 points, 18.5 seconds faster than The Bolles School of Jacksonville, a state powerhouse in cross country.

The top Verot runner was Andrew Marino, a senior who took bronze with a time 15:59.5. Also making the podium was Zachary Zielke, another senior who finished in 5^th place with a time of 16:03.5. Their fellow senior teammates also did great: Dennis Olsen, 10^th place, Zachary Engle, 19^th, and Rafael Casillas, 39^th. The future of the Verot cross country team also did well with junior Thomas Eichten finishing 79^th, and freshman Christian Ginart, placing 174^th among 233 competitors.

On the girls side, the Bishop Verot team placed 25^th overall out of 32 teams. Senior Mackenzie de Lisle, placed 5^th, with a time of 18:37. Mackenzie was the individual regional champion and finished second in the same event in 2023. Other runners on the regional championship Verot team who qualified for the state competition were Caroline Muddell, Jocelyn Sweeney, Lea Scotti, Zoe McCurry, Lana Schmidt, and Gianna Gyurich.

Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School cross country senior runner Paul Svilokos from Sarasota qualified for the State Championship and finished 36^th.

In the 1A cross country championships, the girls’ team at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples finished 21^st overall, while the team from Donahue Academy of Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria finished 22^nd out of 32 teams. The top Donahue runner was senior Isabelle Meyer who placed 25^th overall, while the top Neumann runner was senior Emma Collins who finished 78^th overall.

Cardinal Mooney swimmers excel at States

In the FSHAA 1A swimming state championships on Nov. 16 at FAST in Ocala, Cardinal Mooney High School swimmers made a splash, capping off a successful season filled with shattered school records, numerous personal best times, nine swimmers advancing to the state level, and remarkable team spirit, competing against the top athletes in the state.

The Mooney boys’ team finished 12^th overall out of 46 teams, while the girls finished 31^st out of 44 teams.

In the relay events, the Boys 200-Yard Medley Relay team brought home a podium spot, placing 8th (Jack Gilliam, Daniel Krajewski, Turner Mitten, and Michael Navarro-Lenza). The Girls 200-Yard Medley Relay team finished in 16th place (Sofia Krajewski, Iza Lesniewska, Kiley Renick, and Noelle Troiano). Both relay teams broke school records, etching their names into the CMHS history books.

Individually, Daniel Krajewski earned an impressive 6th-place podium finish in both the 200-Yard Individual Medley (IM) and the 100-Yard Breaststroke. Turner Mitten finished 9th in the 500-Yard Freestyle, and 22nd in the 200-Yard Freestyle.

Sofia Krajewski showcased her versatility and determination with impressive performances in her freshman year, earning 12th in the 100-Yard Backstroke and 14th place in the 200-Yard Freestyle. Other notable performances included Iza Lesniewska, who placed 22nd in both the 50-Yard Freestyle and 100-Yard Freestyle, and Michael Navarro-Lenza, who took 22nd in the 100-Yard Butterfly.
