Cardinal Mooney football team celebrated

To the cheers of students, faculty, family and supporters, the players and coaches of the state champion Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School football team were honored during a special ceremony in Sarasota on Dec. 18, 2025.

The Cardinal Money Cougars won the Class 2A Florida High School Athletic Association state title in Miami on Dec. 10, defeating Bolles High School of Jacksonville 52-28. This is the second state title for the team in the last three years (2023), and third overall (1972).

The celebration took place in the school gymnasium and opened with a video which highlighted the championship season.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane offered the opening prayer for the ceremony. Bishop Dewane took the opportunity to praise the Cardinal Mooney student athletes, coaches and school community.

“Everyone connected to Cardinal Mooney can be proud of and celebrate the great achievement of this team,” Bishop Dewane said. “Sports is not only about physical achievements, however extraordinary they may be, but it is also about giving of oneself in fraternal competition and in support of others as members of a team.”

The Bishop also noted how he prays not only for the continued success of the athletes in the future, but as academicians, and as children of God in their life at Cardinal Mooney and in the world beyond.

The ceremony also included remarks from Principal Ben Hopper, Athletic Director Rafael Fernandez, head coach Jared Clark, as well as Con Nicholas, a member of the 1972 championship team. The final blessing was offered by Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Education.

Among the highlights of the ceremony was the unveiling of the championship banner, which was done by Hayden Pettit and Trip McEachern.

The Cougars finished their season with a 13-1 record and the team finished ranked by MaxPreps as the No. 6 team in the State of Florida, and No. 60 in the nation.

The championship team was led by quarterbacks Davin Davidson, who finished the season with 2,192 yards, and 21 passing touchdowns, and Devin Mignery, who had 348 yards, 4 touchdown passes, while also rushing for 423 yards and an additional touchdown.

The leading rusher was Connail Jackson, who had 190 carries, for 2,547 yards, and 39 touchdowns. The top receiver was Kymistrii Young, who led the way with 42 receptions for 936 yards and 8 touchdowns.

The defense was led by KJ Brown, with 109 tackles; and Jayden Burnett, with 102 tackles. Elijah Golden had 67 tackles, including 14 sacks, while Bryce Fulda had 59 tackles, including 13 sacks. Vantrez Yarn led the team with 7 interceptions.

Cardinal Mooney football 2025 2A State CHAMPS

The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Cougar football team is the Class 2A Florida High School Athletic Association State Champion. The championship was won in Miami Dec. 10, 2025.

This is the Sarasota team’s second title in three years and third football title in the school’s history (2023 and 1972).

The Cougars defeated the Bolles School of Jacksonville 52-28 in a game played at Pitbull Stadium, the home of Florida International University, finishing the season 14-1.

Unlike their 2023 championship during which the final touchdown was scored with 48 seconds to play and sealed on a last second interception, the 2025 championship game was well in hand with Cardinal Mooney leading from late in the first quarter after the game was tied 7-7.

The explosive Cougar offense scored on all eight offensive possessions. The team was led by quarterbacks Davin Davidson (junior) and Devin Mignery (senior) who combined for 226 passing yards and three touchdowns. Mignery tacked on a 54-yard rushing touchdown late in the game. Wide receiver Bo O’Daniel had seven catches for 107 yards and three touchdowns.

The Cardinal Mooney running game was also dominant with 255 yards total. The game MVP was Connail Jackson, a junior running back who rushed for four touchdowns, and finished the game with 170 yards on 28 carries. Connail eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for the season during the state semifinal game on Dec. 5.

On the defensive side, the Cougars were led by Elijiah Golden, a senior defensive end, who finished the game with three sacks, and KJ Brown, a senior middle linebacker, who had an interception and sack.

Prior to leaving for Miami on Dec. 9, a pep rally was held in the Mooney gymnasium for the students and supporters. Deacon Jack Milholland Jr., Mooney Class of 1977 and Permanent Deacon at Our Lady of the Angels Parish in Lakewood Ranch, provided an invocation and blessed the players with holy water.

The cheerleaders then performed before the players made one last run through the tunnel and through the gym to the cheers of the students and supporters. Parents with signs of support lined the driveway as the buses carrying the team, with a Sheriff’s escort, headed for Miami.

A larger contingent of students, faculty, family and supporters travelled in a bus caravan to the game and witnessed history.

To reach the title game, Cardinal Mooney faced a tough schedule, defeating Cocoa High School from Brevard County, the three-time defending state champion, in the Dec. 5 semifinal game. Meanwhile, Bolles has won 11 state titles in its history.

Cardinal Mooney won the 1S State Championship in 2023, then fell to Cocoa (the three-time defending state champion) in the state semifinal in 2024 before beating them in the state semifinal on Dec. 5. Previously, Cougar football teams only made it this far in the playoffs a few times, earning a state title in 1972 and the semifinals in 2006.

This victory by the Cougar football team will be savored by the players, the coaches, the students, the faculty, and the alumni for many years to come. The 1972 team is still spoken about with reverence 51 years later, with several of the players regularly returning to the school to watch games and be recognized. For the seniors on the Cougar team, they will be graduating with two state titles.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane announces the new members to the Presbyteral Council, as a result of the most recent elections and appointments. They are: Father Lawton Lang, Representative of the Central Deanery; Father Sebastian Szczawinski, Representative of the Northern Deanery; Father John Nghia Hoang, Member-at-Large; Father Eric Scanlan, Member-at-Large; Father Benjamin Casimir, appointed; Father Greg Cleveland, O.M.V., appointed; Father Alex Pince, appointed; and Father Teofilo Useche, appointed. Congratulations to the new members. At the same time, an expression of gratitude is extended to those who served on the Presbyteral Council in their respective categories: Father Anthony Armstrong, O.Carm., Father Thomas Carzon, O.M.V., Father Shawn Roser, and Father Ricky Varner.

 

Special time for TV Mass on Christmas for the Homebound

The televised Christmas Day Mass for the Homebound. with celebrant Bishop Frank J. Dewane, will air for a full hour at 8 a.m., Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2025. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Mass airs on the CW Network. Sarasota student recognized in national Missionary Christmas art contest

Brooke Lewicki, a student at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School has been recognized as one of 24 national winners in the Missionary Childhood Association (MCA) Christmas Artwork Contest. Brooke’s artwork was created while she was an eighth-grader at St. Martha Catholic School. Her artwork, and that of all the winners, is on display throughout the Advent and Christmas Seasons at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. This is not the first time a St. Martha Catholic School student has been honored through the MCA Christmas Artwork Contest. In fact, this is the fifth year in a row a St. Martha student has been a national finalist in the MCA contest! Well done Brooke!

 

Jubilee of Prisoners, Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025

The Church always prays for and remembers prisoners, who have a special place in the Heart of Christ and in the heart of the Church — visiting prisoners is a Corporal Work of Mercy.  However, The Holy Father has designated Sunday, Dec. 14, 2025, as the Jubilee of Prisoners, and on this day, prisoners will be remembered in the Mass in a particular way, by Bishop Frank J. Dewane, and by priests and the faithful throughout the Diocese of Venice. The Jubilee for Prisoners is part of this year’s Jubilee of Hope. A Jubilee Year is a special time of grace to open our hearts to hope and trust in God. Holy Years remind and inspire us to put effort into restoring and reconciling our relationship with our God the Father in Heaven, who always wants to wrap us in His loving and merciful embrace, with Jesus Christ leading us “by the hand” to the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit. No matter our past, God is ever willing to pour out His gifts and His grace. In particular. please remember those who are incarcerated in your prayers, on Dec. 14, 2025.

 

Athletes sign to play in college

Congratulations to a number of Diocesan Catholic high school athletes who signed commitment papers during the early signing period on Dec. 3, 2025, to continue playing sports at the next level. Seven football players at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota made their commitments. They are: Elijah Golden – University of Notre Dame; Bryce Fulda – Western Kentucky University; Macaiden Brown – Liberty University; Zac Samuel – Mercer University; Kymistri Young – University of North Carolina; Ethan Salata – Stetson University; and Max Polivchak – Presbyterian College. At St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples, six athletes also made their commitments: for football, Jayden Petit – University of Oklahoma, and Frederic Sainteus – University of Miami; for volleyball, Sofia Vargas – Belmont Abbey College; in golf, Ryan Toole – Denison University; in softball, Jennifer Drake – Florence-Darlington Technical College, and Kathryn Hanypsiak – Colgate University. These young men and women truly embody what it means to lead with faith, compete with heart, and represent their school with excellence. Congratulations all.

Bishop to speak at Theology on Tap Dec. 18 

Bishop Frank J. Dewane will be the guest speaker for the Dec. 18, 2025, gathering of the Theology on Tap in Sarasota. Theology on Tap is a monthly meeting of fellowship, faith, and fun with fellow Catholic young adults from across the Diocese. Don’t miss this chance to grow in faith, connect with others, and enjoy a great evening together. Mass at Dawn (Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo) Dec. 15-23

St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish, 1441 Spear St., Port Charlotte, is hosting the traditional Mass at Dawn (Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo), Dec. 13-23, 2025. The Diocese of Venice Catholic Charismatic Renewal will host a one-day retreat, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Jan. 10, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. Four Diocesan Parishes Catholic offering women’s program starting in January

Four Diocesan Parishes will be starting a free Catholic women’s program beginning in January. She Shall Be Called Woman (SHE) is a place for Catholic women who want to be truly known and loved on their journey with the Lord. It features different topics of study each season, designed to educate and foster deep sisterhood and spiritual growth through talks, discussion, and prayer. A new session begins in January and continues through April. Marriage Prep retreats/seminars coming soon

Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. The retreats are from 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and the $60 registration fee includes all retreat materials and lunch. The Day of Reflection Marriage Preparation Retreat is a specially prepared volunteer team of married couples, and a priest, who share their experiences and information, enabling couples to be more aware of the privileges and responsibilities of marriage. The first of many Marriage Retreats in 2026 is Jan. 10 at St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples. In addition, there is the Two Become One Marriage Retreat for couples 55 and older preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage or convalidation in the Catholic Church. The next Two Become One Marriage Retreat is on May 2, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. Registration is required for all retreats at 2026 Day of Reflection MP Retreat. March for Life, Washington D.C., Jan. 22-23, 2026

The March for Life is the largest annual human rights demonstration in the world. Every January, tens of thousands of pro-lifers converge in Washington, D.C. and march on Capitol Hill. WARNING – Text/Email Scam Alert

Parishioners have received text/email messages from people pretending to be clergy – including Bishop Frank J. Dewane – or Parish/school staff, requesting donations in the form of gift cards and/or wire transfers. The scam often claims that the priest, Bishop, or staff member is in need of gift cards or money to aid a sick child, relative, or parishioner. It is Diocesan policy that neither the Bishop, nor priests or staff request donations in the form of gift cards, PayPal, MoneyGram, etc.  There is an established process for how to make donations and participate in the life of the Diocese, Parish, or school. If you receive such a scam text or email, please do not respond, and immediately contact the Diocese, Parish, or school directly!

Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Mooney football reaches third straight State Semifinal

EDITOR’S NOTE: Cardinal Mooney won State Semifinal Game 40-0, playing in State Championship game Dec. 10, 2025, in Miami.

The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Cougar Football Team has reached the Florida High School Athletic Association 2A state semifinal game for the third consecutive year.

 

To earn that right, the Cougars (12-1) won their regional semifinal game Nov. 21, 2025, at home in Sarasota over rival Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers. The final score was 51-14. Cardinal Mooney also defeated Bishop Verot earlier in the regular season and now leads the overall series 26-22.

The Cardinal Mooney team then won their regional championship Nov. 28, also at home, over Lakewood High School of St. Petersburg, 49-29.

 

The Cougars were led by junior Connail Jackson, a running back who had 351 yards rushing and five touchdowns versus Lakewood, following up a 215-yard, four-touchdown game a week earlier versus Bishop Verot.

 

The Cougars will play the state semifinal game at home versus Cocoa High School from Broward County at 7 p.m., Dec. 5.

Cardinal Mooney swimmer medals at States

Sofia Krajewski, a swimmer for Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota, earned medals in two events at the Florida High School Athletic Association 1A State Championship on Nov. 8, 2025, in Ocala. Sofia finished 6th in the 100 backstroke, and 7th in the individual medley. Well done Sofia!

Eagle Run supports Bradenton Catholic school

St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton hosted its annual Eagle Run Nov. 7, 2025. This was a fundraising event that reached its goal of $40,000. Students, faculty and even Father Rafal Liginza, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish, took part. Each classroom had banners made for their running teams. The run took everyone in laps around the school. The Knights of Columbus provided a hot dog lunch, with Italian ices offered as a refreshing treat afterwards.

School’s garden harvest makes for blessed meal

The second-grade students at St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota have been in charge of growing a variety of vegetables in the school hydroponic garden. The hard worked paid off with the “Garden to Table Dinner” Nov. 6, 2025. It was a fantastic evening, with nearly 300 students, families and friends enjoying a delicious meal, the beautiful gardens and much more! Well done second grade gardeners and to all who made the evening special.

Vocations promoted at Fort Myers Catholic high school

Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers welcomed special guests to their campus the week of Nov. 3-7, 2025, in recognition of National Vocations Awareness Week. Father Alex Pince, Diocese of Venice Vocations Director, and three religious women of the Servant Sisters of the Virgin of Matara, based out of St. Michael Parish in Wauchula, shared their experiences and reflections on the call to serve Christ and His Church. Each offered powerful insights into discovering and living out one’s vocation. National Vocations Awareness Week reminds us that Christ calls each of us to follow Him in unique ways – through faith, service, and the pursuit of our true purpose.

Marriage Prep retreat held in Venice

Marriage Preparation Retreats are required by the Diocese of Venice for those couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church. To help facilitate this requirement, the Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization hosts retreats in English and Spanish at different times throughout the year. The most recent retreat took place Nov. 8, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. There were 50 couples in attendance. Diocesan priest participates in Jubilee of the World of Education

During the 2025 Jubilee Year, the Vatican hosted a Jubilee of the World of Education from Oct. 27 to Nov. 1, 2025. Ignatian Preached Retreat in November

Advocate honored with Diocesan Culture of Life Award

Art Reilly, Pro-Life Coordinator at Incarnation Parish in Sarasota, and former board member of Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center, was honored with the Diocese of Venice Culture of Life Award at the Culture of Life Conference Oct 4, 2025, in Miami. Reilly also went above and beyond to help defeat Amendment 4, which would have radically expanded access to abortion in Florida. Among his work was speaking at multiple Catholic and non-Catholic churches to speak the truth about the amendment, as well as creating and placing yard signs, and then reposting the signs following two 2024 hurricanes.

Port Charlotte Catholic school hosts basketball tournament

The first ever “Battle for the Shield Basketball Classic” took place at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on Oct. 18, 2025. The host Crusaders won the four-team round-robin event as the players radiated joy, passion and teamwork on the court.

Mooney team excels at Model UN competition

Six Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Model UN students from Sarasota attended the BULLSMUN Conference at the University of South Florida in Tampa Oct. 17-18, 2025. Congratulations to Cristina Peterson and Robbie Beall, whose Resolution Paper was one of only two teams passed out of 70 who participated – an incredible accomplishment. Carter Abraham also earned a Commendation for her outstanding work in the Committee on the French Republic. Delegates included Robbie Beall, Cristina Peterson, Carter Abraham, Giovanna Ackroyd, Isabella Rabines, and Kyla Logan.

Bradenton Robotics team shows off their skills

It was an eventful and fun time on Oct. 12, 2025, as members of the St. Joseph Catholic School Robotics Team from Bradenton had an opportunity to show off their skills and share LEGO robot activities at the Parrish Community Fall Festival. School staff also shared information about the upcoming Open House on Nov. 19. The Community Festival was sponsored in part by St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish.

Students unite with sick classmate

Several senior boys at St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples showed what true brotherhood looks like – shaving their heads in solidarity with their classmate and friend, Raphy, who is courageously battling cancer. Their act of love and support took place Oct. 8, 2025, and serves as a powerful reminder that the strength of the school’s Celtic community goes far beyond the classroom. Please keep Raphy and his family in your prayers as he continues his fight with courage and grace.

Boosterthon held at Port Charlotte school

St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte hosted a Boosterthon to celebrate meeting a fundraising goal on Oct. 8, 2025. The Boosterthon included a gym dance party, a fun run, and a color run on the field – all filled with laughter, joy, and school spirit. The day was dedicated to honor the life of Markus Dixon, a beloved student whose light and kindness reminded everyone what community, courage, and love truly mean.

Ignatian Preached Retreat in November

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, is hosting a silent Ignatian Preached Retreat, Nov. 21-24, 2025. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Mooney tops Verot in rivalry game

Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School from Sarasota defeated their rivals on the road on Sept. 26, 2025, topping Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers.

The 49-14 victory brings the Caridinal Mooney Cougars to a 4-1 record, while the Bishop Verot Vikings are 2-3. This was the third victory by the Cougars over the Vikings in a year. Cardinal Mooney snapped a losing streak to Bishop Verot in September 2024, and again during the 2024 playoffs. The Cougars leads the all-time series 25-22.

Mooney was led by running back Connail Jackson, who rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries. Quarterback Davin Davidson threw for 251 yards and two touchdowns. The team finished with 211 rushing yards. In addition, Laron Foye ran a punt back for a touchdown.

Verot was led by Deshon Jenkins Jr. who rushed for 73 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while Macrae Thompson rushed for 78 yards. Meanwhile, Ayden Gonzalez racked up 82 receiving yards.

Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocese of Venice Superintendent of Catholic Education, attended the game, splitting his time between the two sidelines.

Congratulations to Cardinal Mooney for the win, and to both teams for their solid efforts in this historic rivalry.

Father Timothy Deutsch is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of St. William Parish in Naples effective Aug. 26, 2025, and thus returned to his Diocese of Duluth in Minnesota.

Father Jean Kesnel Metellus, C.S. is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Immokalee, effective Sept. 28, 2025, and thus, will return to his Religious Order.

Bishop celebrates Mass for Port Charlotte students

Bishop Frank J. Dewane celebrated Mass for students at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte on Sept. 19, 2025. Bishop Dewane encouraged the students to hear the call of the Lord and live as Jesus teaches all of us. Following Mass, the Bishop spoke with the eighth graders, encouraging them to be the leaders of their school. The eighth graders were also given the opportunity to ask the Bishop questions. At the conclusion, a photo was taken with Bishop and the group.

 

High school hosts volleyball match under the lights

In an exciting twist from the usual Friday Night Lights in Sarasota, the Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School Lady Cougar team hosted its first-ever Cougar Outdoor Invitational at Austin Smithers Stadium on the football field under the lights on Sept. 19, 2025. The Cougars played round-robin matches versus teams from Sarasota High School and Lakewood Ranch High School. Cardinal Mooney won both matches.

 

Students begin 75th anniversary celebrations

St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota is in the process of celebrating the 75th anniversary of its founding and will hold a special Gala on Oct. 25, 2025. To help the students get into the excitement of the anniversary, on Sept. 17, 2025, they went out onto the athletic field and stood in rows that shaped the number 75, as seen from a drone. Students pack meals for needy

St. Ann Catholic School middle school students spent the morning of Sept. 17, 2025, participating in a Meals For Hope food packing event. In just a few hours, the students created 51,000 meals for neighbors experiencing food insecurity. The food will be distributed to the local community helping neighbors in need.

Students help with beach cleanup

On a Saturday morning, members of the National Junior Honor Society from St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School in Port Charlotte took part in a beach cleanup on Sept. 20, 2025. By participating, the students showed character, drive and dedication in helping to beautify the community.

Verot football players visit senior living facility

Football players for Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers took time out from practice to visit Highpoint Senior Living in Cape Coral on Sept. 18, 2025. From sharing a meal, to swapping stories with the residents, it was an afternoon full of smiles, connection, and service.

Jubilee Monthly Days of Prayer Oct. 8 and 12

The Monthly Day of Prayer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, for October is either Oct. 8 or 12, 2025. Father Leland Thorpe, OMV, will be “Unlocking the Rosary.” Father will help participants find ways to enter more deeply into the Rosary and mine the riches it contains. Single women ages 18-30 who are seeking God’s will in their life are invited to grow deeper in prayer and in their identity as a woman, as well as learn more about discerning religious life during a Fiat Ministries Retreat during the weekend of Oct. 10-12, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. This retreat is led by Team Fiat, a dynamic group of lay women passionate about supporting other young women. 20th Hispanic Fall Festival in Sarasota Nov. 8

Marriage preparation opportunity in Venice Nov. 8

Couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church are encouraged to attend a Day of Reflection Nov. 8, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. Kristallnacht Commemoration in Naples Nov. 9

Catholic-Jewish Dialogue (CJD) of Collier County invites the community to the commemoration of the 87th Anniversary of Kristallnacht or “Night of Broken Glass,” which historians consider the beginning of the Holocaust. This free community event takes place at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025, at Temple Shalom, 4630 Pine Ridge Road, Naples. The Kristallnacht commemorative event memorializes the six million Jews who were exterminated during the Holocaust. The event is sponsored by CJD, the Diocese of Venice in Florida, the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, GenShoah of SWFL, and the Holocaust Museum & Janet G. and Harvey D. Catholic Mass on Veterans Day

A Catholic Mass on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2025, will be held outdoors in Patriot’s Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery at 3 pm. This annual Mass, now in its 16th year in the Diocese of Venice, has become a sacred tradition. Gathering as one people under God, we honor and remember our United States veterans, both living and deceased. All are welcome to attend and join in prayer for the souls of our faithfully departed veterans as well as for those currently in the military, and all who labor to protect the freedom we enjoy. 2024 Diocesan Youth Rally Nov. 15

Ignatian Preached Retreat coming to Retreat Center

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, is hosting a silent Ignatian Preached Retreat, Nov. 21-24, 2025. This silent retreat will introduce participants to the great themes of the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in a group setting. The schedule includes conferences each day, daily Mass, and an opportunity to meet with the retreat director for Confession and/or spiritual direction. Conference topics center on Ignatian spirituality, prayer, and discernment. Prison Ministry volunteers needed throughout Diocese

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Disciples of Christ on their way: One week in and students are fully engaged

The ubiquitous car line, the trudging of feet in the hallways, the ringing of the first bell, morning prayers and then classroom instruction, are scenes repeated each day at the 15 Diocese of Venice Catholic schools since the start of the 2025-2026 Academic Year on Aug. 11, 2025, with the full complement of 6,700 students engaged in schoolwork by Aug. 13.

The first days were full of everyone figuring out where to go, reuniting with old friends or making new ones, participating in their first academic lessons and taking part in a myriad of extracurricular activities.

At Diocesan Catholic schools, each student attended an opening Mass, either the first day of school, or within the first week, with most taking place on Aug. 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Father John Belmonte, SJ, Diocesan Superintendent of Catholic Education, celebrated Mass on the Solemnity for the students at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers. Father Belmonte stressed the word “belief” as a keyword to focus on throughout this school year. He described it as the most important word in the history of the world, “it is of course why we are gathered here; we believe.”

Challenging the high schoolers, Father Belmonte said as they go through the school year, and life, there is one question that will guide their spiritual life. “What do you want? God wants to help you answer that question,” Father said.

The STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning model, which was introduced in the 2020-2021 school year, is fully implemented in all classrooms. This effort includes incorporated renewed emphasis on Diocesan Catholic Curriculum Standards as part of the Diocesan curriculum called, “The Gifts of Christ: Truth, Beauty, Goodness, Affability, Fortitude, Humility, and Prudence.”

This approach, fully supported by Bishop Frank J. Dewane, places students ahead of the curve in primary fields while continuing to promote core Catholic virtues by helping students to develop cognitive thought processes and gain skills such as leadership, communication, complex problem solving, teamwork and creativity. The intention is to ensure religion and faith permeate everything in the Diocesan Catholic schools.

All 15 Diocesan Catholic schools work conscientiously to provide Christ-centered learning experiences that are translatable to the real world, providing children with the tools they need to be successful beyond the classroom.

Enrollment numbers throughout the Diocese are up 40 percent over the past four years to a new record exceeding 6,700. The largest enrollment increase occurred at Donahue Catholic Academy of Ave Maria, with the welcoming of 175 students this year thanks to the installation of mobile classrooms.

St. Francis Xavier Catholic School students in Fort Myers returned to the classroom to find their sports/recess field was refurbished during the summer. The old grass was removed and the field leveled, as new grass and a full irrigation system were installed, creating a safer, greener, and more enjoyable space for the students.

St. John Neumann Catholic High School in Naples held a House Retreat Day, where new students are assigned to one of four Houses which will serve as their center of social and school spirit activities. Each of the four teams competes for points to earn different rewards or prizes throughout the year, with a trophy for the winners at the end.

Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School in Sarasota rolled out its new House Program with an Aug. 14 celebratory Pep Rally. Members of each of the six houses gathered in the gymnasium for fun and games.

On the gridiron, the Bishop Verot Catholic High School football team opened their season at home on Aug. 15 against St. John Neumann. Bishop Verot won 38-7.

Just before school began, the three Catholic schools in Lee County were the beneficiary of the Catholic Schools Spirit Night on Aug. 8, at The Mighty Mussels minor league baseball game at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. Part of the proceeds benefitted Bishop Verot, St. Francis Xavier, as well as St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral.
