Appointments

After consultation, Bishop Frank J. Dewane announces the following appointments:

Father James Cogan, as Parochial Vicar of St. Joseph Parish in Bradenton, effective August 4, 2025, and thus is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of Incarnation Parish in Sarasota.

Father James Simko, on personal leave effective August 4, 2025, and thus is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of St. Joseph Parish in Bradenton.

Father Ananda Anki Reddy, is relieved of his duties as Parochial Vicar of St. Andrew Parish in Cape Coral, effective August 20, 2025, and thus, will return to his home Diocese of Cuddapah, India.

 

School receives honor

St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton has been recognized as a Silver Award winner in Bradenton’s Best Private School category for the second year in a row, by Bradenton Best, a special magazine supplement of the Bradenton Herald. The winners were chosen by votes from readers. St. Joseph Catholic School is rooted in faith, and is committed to academic excellence and leadership since 1954.

Assumption – Holy Day of Obligation

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Friday, August 15, 2025, is a Holy Day of Obligation. On this day the Church acknowledges and celebrates the fact that Mary, the Mother of God, was assumed into Heaven at the end of her earthly life. “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of his Body” (CCC 974). According to Church doctrine, Holy Days of Obligation are feast days on which Catholics are required to attend Mass and to avoid (to the extent that they are able) servile work.

Marilyn Brummer Fund grant applications open

The Catholic Community Foundation of Southwest Florida is pleased to announce that grant applications are now being accepted for the Marilyn Brummer Fund. Brummer was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner at St. John XXIII Catholic Church in Fort Myers. She was incredibly generous with her time, her talent, and her treasure in order to make a difference in the lives of others, especially students and the most vulnerable among us. As a part of her Catholic Legacy, and through a generous gift from her estate, Marilyn created a fund with the Catholic Community Foundation to continue supporting causes which she cared about most, long after she is gone. This year, the CCF will be awarding a total of $108,000 in grants to programs, projects, or entities that are located in, and associated with, the Diocese of Venice in Florida. The program, project or entity must be involved in one of the following areas: Anti-human trafficking assistance; Programs that assist single mothers; and Children’s Center of Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc. in Fort Myers. Day of Reflection for Sacramental Marriage in September and November

Couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church are encouraged to attend a Day of Reflection either Sept. 20, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, Pulte Hall, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples, or Nov. 8 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. Taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. a specially prepared volunteer team of married couples share their experiences and information, enabling couples to be more aware of the privileges and responsibilities of marriage. Jubilee Monthly Days of Prayer Resume in September

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice, resumes the Monthly Day of Prayer in September. This is an opportunity to take time out of your busy and hectic life to focus on God. The day begins at 9:30 a.m. with Continental breakfast and includes two conferences by an OLPH priest, the opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, lunch, and Mass. 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign

Join the 40 Days for Life 2025 campaign this fall from Sept. 24 to Nov. 2, 2025. This campaign, scheduled for locations in Sarasota, Fort Myers and Naples, aims to end abortion through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and peaceful vigil in front of abortion facilities. Participants support the mission by spreading awareness and praying. The Sarasota campaign is hosting a special kickoff at 10:30 a.m., Sept. 26, 2025, in the parking lot of Community Pregnancy Clinics Inc., 1419 7th St., Sarasota. The clinic sits in the shadow of the regional headquarters of Planned Parenthood, the largest abortionist in the country. Diocesan Rosary Congress returns in October

The Diocese of Venice will host its annual Rosary Congress Oct. 4-10, 2025, with a growing number of Parishes throughout the Diocese participating. The theme of this year’s Rosary Congress is My Soul Magnifies the Lord (Luke 1:46). The Rosary Congress begins with the celebration of daily Mass and ends with Mass at the same time the following day. During these designated 24 hours, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for perpetual Adoration, and the five decades of the Rosary are prayed by the faithful every hour, on the hour. Retreat for young women
Single women ages 18-30 who are seeking God’s will in their life are invited to grow deeper in prayer and in their identity as a woman, as well as learn more about discerning religious life during a Fiat Ministries Retreat the weekend of Oct. 10-12, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. This retreat is led by Team Fiat, a dynamic group of lay women passionate about supporting other young women. Additionally, consecrated religious sisters from various religious communities from the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) assist at each retreat, making each one a unique experience. The goal is for the retreatants to walk away with a greater desire to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ while meeting religious sisters. The cost is $50. Young participants spend summer growing closer to Christ

Hearts are on fire for Jesus Christ for the 1,650 young faithful who took part in the Totus Tuus weekly sessions at 17 host Parishes in the Diocese of Venice throughout the summer.

The goal of the Totus Tuus program is to help young people develop in their understanding of the faith and strengthen their relationship with Jesus Christ. Just as important, the program teaches the boys and girls that faith is fun! Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours,” was a motto of St. John Paul II, taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s “True Devotion to Mary.” It signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary.

On July 24, 2025, young participants in the program at Our Lady of the Angels Parish joyously participated in the opening prayers and songs. They expressed their enthusiasm about how much fun they were having and how the Totus Tuus missionaries served as an inspiration for them. Here is just a small sample of what the young people had to say: “Jesus loves me!” “Mary is our Queen in Heaven!” “This is the best!” “Each day is better and better!” “Awesome!”

Fourteen Totus Tuus missionaries, trained young men and women, mostly college-age, led the program, and were just as enthusiastic as the young campers as the summer drew to a close. Each was moved by the experience of imparting faith on eager young minds.

Missionary Jesina Cortez, who is from St. James Parish and Santigo Mission in Lake Placid, returned for her second time as a missionary because of how much she got out of it in 2024. This year, she said the experience was just as rewarding with the best part making personal connections to the youngest of students. “To witness their wonder and love for Christ develop through the week was inspiring. It was hard to say good-bye to each group.”

“Once again, throughout the summer the Diocese was blessed to have the Totus Tuus missionaries who brought an excitement about the faith to different Parishes each week, helping to awaken in children of all ages a desire and enthusiasm for holiness,” said Bishop Frank J. Dewane.

Run by the Diocesan Office of Youth and Young Adults, Totus Tuus seeks to foster openness to the sacrifices and blessings of the various Christian vocations through evangelization and catechesis. The program inspires young people to develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

Totus Tuus works to complement what the children are learning from their parents, who are the first and best educators in matters of faith. This is something Bishop Dewane has stressed since the program had its trial run in the Diocese in 2022.

Diocesan Youth and Youth Adult Director Andres Prias said during the past four years of the Totus Tuus program he has witnessed its growth, “not only in the number of Parishes involved or participants attending, but in how the experience itself has taken root. Families, youth, and children have truly made it their own. It comes down to the work of the missionaries, whose witness has touched so many hearts, giving life to the words: “We are all yours, Lord Jesus.’”

 

Jim Gontis, Diocesan Director of Evangelization, said the expansion to 17 Parishes this year came about through the unwavering support of Bishop Dewane, and the collaborative effort that begins with the outstanding missionaries, Parish Pastors and Administrators, as well as the Parish leaders and volunteers.

“One of the most beautiful fruits of Totus Tuus is the joy on the faces of the young people,” Gontis said. “This was evident as they encountered Jesus in the Mass, in Eucharistic Adoration, and in the healing grace of Confession. Many parents remarked how much their children shared with them about what they learned about the Sacraments, the power of the Rosary, and the Catholic Faith as a whole.”

Bishop attends anniversary celebration of home Parish in Wisconsin

Bishop Frank J. Dewane attended the 175th anniversary celebration Mass at his home Parish, St. James in Cooperstown, Wisconsin, July 27, 2025. Green Bay Diocesan Bishop David Ricken was the principal celebrant for the anniversary Mass and Bishop Dewane, who was baptized, confirmed, and celebrated his first Mass at St. James, was the homilist. Bishop Dewane, who was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay in 1988, spoke about growing up as a member of the Parish and being a part of the last graduating class of St. James School in 1964. “I hope it wasn’t my fault,” he said in reference to the school closing after his last year, which drew a laugh from the congregation. Bishop Dewane shared that in the Diocese of Venice, where he became a Bishop in 2007, there is also a St. James Parish, and that his visits there always bring back memories of home.  “When I’m there, my prayers are also for all of you,” the Bishop said.

Summer camps bring smiles to young faces, and hearts closer to Jesus

The summer season is a time for family vacations but also summer fun at home. Many  children in the Diocese of Venice participate in summer camps where Parishes and Catholic schools offer a chance for faith and fun.

At the forefront of the summer programs is the ongoing Totus Tuus initiative of the Diocese of Venice. The week-long day camps, brought to the Diocese in 2022 by Bishop Frank J. Dewane, are taking place at different Parishes throughout the Diocese each week for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading  the campers.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. They also learn about the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

In the evenings, the older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditation and prayer. One evening includes participation in Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In the first five weeks, the program has taken place at 12 Parishes, with the most recent camps being held the week of July 6-11, 2025, at St. Cecilia Parish in Fort Myers, and jointly at Our Lady of Light and St. John XXIII Parishes, both in Fort Myers. Priests and staff have universally expressed how positive the program has been for their entire congregation.

The final two weeks of the program take place at the following Parishes: St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; and St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Additional Camp Programs in the Diocese of Venice

Many Parishes also host a Vacation Bible School. This weeklong camp is intended to teach children to love God and thank the Lord for all the wonderful gifts in the world. A typical day includes children learning Bible stories, and then singing and dancing in praise of God. The week concludes with a large celebration and participation in the Mass.

While many teens volunteer at summer camps, Parishes also offer programs to support them through week-long retreats or the participation in regional youth conferences.

Uniquely, St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted a series of weekly camps in June. The separate weeks focused on boys, girls, and then teens. Led by the women religious at the Parish, the Servant Sisters of the Virgin of Matara, these camps are full of fun and faith.

Multiple Diocesan Catholic schools hosted STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math) camps. Some covered several weeks for eager students.

Area Catholic high schools hosted a variety of sports camps (soccer, football, basketball, cheerleading and many others). These camps offer a chance for younger children to learn the skills needed to excel in different sports while at the same time having a bit of fun.

Catholic Charities, Diocese of Venice, Inc., hosts three summer programs. In Bonita Springs, the program includes a variety of games and projects giving the children the opportunity to show off their athletic, artistic and other skills. The campers also take a variety of interesting field trips. The camp at Catholic Charities Children’s Center in Fort Myers nurtures the youth by guiding and inspiring them to become lifelong learners, community builders, and individuals dedicated to serving others. Similarly, the camp at Casa San Juan Bosco farmworker community in Arcadia offers a program where children work with crafts, improve their reading skills and of course have fun.

These are just some of the examples of the exciting activities that are taking place for the thousands of young people in the Diocese during the “slow” season. Faith can be fun!

Diocesan priest celebrates 5th anniversary of ordination with Mass at Vatican

Father Franckel Fils Aime, a priest of the Diocese of Venice who is currently studying in Rome, had the blessing to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his priestly ordination during a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, on June 27, 2025, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Mass was celebrated by Pope Leo XIV, and included the ordination of 32 priests. Father Fils Aime most recently served as Parochial Vicar at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples before beginning his studies in Rome. He described the experience as a “grace from Heaven to study, and especially studying to serve God’s people.”

Avon Park parishioner honored for volunteering and service

Debbie Augusta, of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Avon Park, was recently named the Salt & Pepper Award recipient for community service and volunteerism at the Senior Connections Center Rise & Shine awards ceremony in Tampa on May 20, 2025. According to the award announcement, Augusta was recognized for her remarkable leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Our Lady of Grace and beyond. She has been a positive presence in the community, volunteering her time to support and uplift others. She has led the Women’s Guild, and Parish Council, and brings people together with purpose and heart by leading a variety of fundraisers, food festivals, and other charitable drives. Her service is rooted in relationship building, hands-on care, and leading by example. Congratulations and well done Debbie!

The Trump Administration is terminating all but two of Catholic Relief Services’ school feeding programs, eliminating a daily school meal for close to 800,000 children in 11 countries beginning in July. For many, this was their only meal of the day.  These terminations aren’t just broken agreements with CRS. Totus Tuus summer program still going strong

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The week-long summer camp program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first four weeks, the program has taken place at 10 Parishes, with the most recent Ave Maria in Ave Maria and St. Jude in Sarasota. Following the Fourth of July holiday, the program resumes at the following: St. Cecilia, Fort Myers; Our Lady of Light, Fort Myers; St. John XXIII, Fort Myers; St. Thomas More, Sarasota (July 6-11); St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Diocese and Parish honored for Pro-Life work in Sarasota

The Diocese of Venice Respect Life Office and Incarnation Parish staff in Sarasota were recognized for their work in support of Pro-Life initiatives in the community during the Sarasota Ministerial Association “24th Anniversary Celebration,” June 19, 2025, at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church in Sarasota. Among those recognized were Tavia Ames, Diocesan Respect Life Director, Father Eric Scanlan, Pastor of Incarnation Parish, Deacon Kevin McKenney, of Incarnation Parish and the board of Sarasota Family Promise, and Lisa Russo, Incarnation Parish secretary. Presenting the honor was Art Reilly, past board chair of Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center.

Independence Day bike and golf cart parade to be held in Ave Maria

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 3862 of Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria is hosting is 9th annual “God Bless America: Independence Day Bike and Golf Cart Parade.” The opening ceremony will take place in the Piazza in front of Ave Maria Parish church with the parade, led by fire trucks, immediately following. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, golf carts, skateboards, and strollers. The route is approximately 2 miles long, but a shorter route, around the church, is available for younger riders. Light refreshments, including birthday cake for the Nation, will be available at the conclusion of the parade.

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. Fort Myers coach leading USA baseball team

Casey Scott, a baseball head coach at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, has been selected as manager of the USA Baseball 15U National Team. Scott just finished his sixth season as head coach at Bishop Verot, leading the team to a State Final Four for the second consecutive season. During the summers of 2023 and 2024, Scott served as pitching coach for the USA Baseball 15U National Team.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites the faithful to the Ordination to the Priesthood of Transitional Deacons Joseph Doherty, Jacob Gwynn and Pat Long. Faith is Fun! 2025 Totus Tuus Summer Catechetical Camp begins

The Totus Tuus one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camps have begun with the first three Parishes hosting between June 1 and June 6, 2025. An additional 15 Parishes will host the weekly program through July 25.

Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours” – is a one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camp program, for students entering grades 1-12, and aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

The first host Parishes are St. Frances Xavier Cabrini Parish, Parrish; St. Finbar Parish, Naples; and San Pedro Parish, North Port.

Totus Tuus missionaries, trained college-aged or older men and women, lead the program. The week-long camps are divided into two segments, with the day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, and an evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. They also learning about the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary.

At San Pedro Parish, the young children start each day singing and dancing to “My Lighthouse,” an inspirational song that puts a focus on the importance of having the Lord at the center of their lives. Each day they receive a different colored string, which represents a key word for the day. Eventually, the group will put all they learned together and go to Mass.

In the evenings, the older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditation, prayer and fellowship. The final night (Thursday) includes participation in Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament and the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane encouraged the pilot program be brought to the Diocese in 2022 to great success, with expansions in 2023 to 11 host Parishes, 12 for 2024, and now 18 for 2025.

Bishop confers confirmation on prison inmates

Bishop Frank J. Dewane conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation upon four inmates in the Diocese of Venice in June 2025. Three were confirmed at Charlotte Correctional Institute in Punta Gorda on June 1, and one at the Hardee Correction Institute in Bowling Green on June 2. When celebrating the Mass for the incarcerated, Bishop Dewane emphasized that he is bringing the forgiveness, mercy, compassion, peace, love and joy of the Lord to others and took time to speak with the inmates after the Mass. Each year, the Bishop celebrates Mass for inmates at different facilities throughout the 10-county Diocese, and has conferred the Sacraments of Confirmation, First Communion and Baptism for dozens of inmates since 2006. The Diocesan Prison Ministry provides a variety of services, including Bible study, TV Mass, religious education and assistance with receiving the Sacraments. Within its boundaries, the Diocese has five state prisons, 10 county jails and one civil commitment program. There are approximately 15,000 incarcerated within the Diocese; meaning the need for priests and volunteers is great. Two schools join Knights in helping migrant farm workers

St. Mary Academy and St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota worked together on a service project and collected 250 long sleeve shirts for Falkner Farm migrant workers in Myakka. These shirts are vital in protecting workers from pesticides getting on their skin. The schools worked with Knights of Columbus Holy Cross Council 7414 of Palmetto, ensuring the success of the collection drive. The school donations were combined with donations from Holy Cross Parish and other Knights councils and totaled more than 1,000 long sleeve shirts.

Ave Maria Youth Conference July 11-13

The 2025 Ave Maria University “Proclaim” Youth Conference is July 11-13. The theme for the Conference is “But as for you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:60). The Conference will include talks from Sister Maria Jose Socias, SCTJM, Michael Gormley, Mari Pablo, and Father Joseph Lugalambi. Music will be by Epic Music Ministries. The Conference will include Mass, Adoration, praise and worship, lodging, meals, t-shirts, a pizza night, and more. Registration is $195. per person. 2025 Totus Tuus summer program to be featured at 18 Parishes

The successful Totus Tuus summer catechetical Parish program will soon be taking place at a Parish near you.

The final week of May saw 15 missionaries undergo intensive training and preparation as the first three Parish camps start June 1, 2025. Ultimately, there will be seven separate weeks with a total18 Parishes serving as weekly hosts through July 25. More than 1,000 children and teens will be impacted by this special outreach.

Totus Tuus – which means “totally yours” – is a one-week Parish Catechetical summer day camp program, for students entering grades 1-12, and aims to inspire young people to long for holiness, develop a deep desire for conversion and personally renew their faith with a stronger prayer life.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane encouraged the pilot program be brought to the Diocese in 2022 to great success, with expansions in 2023 to 11 host Parishes, 12 for 2024, and now 18 for 2025. During past visits to Totus Tuus camps, Bishop Dewane has been impressed by the response each child had to the uplifting program. “In each classroom everyone was so excited and alive about their love of the Lord!”

Bishop Dewane celebrated Mass for the Totus Tuus missionaries on May 28, while they were going through their training at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice. He encouraged the young missionaries to call upon the Holy Spirit to guide them through the summer and reminded them of the important role they will have for the boys and girls they encounter this summer.

This training focused on the spiritual aspect of the Totus Tuus program, including daily prayer, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Mass. Other components of the training covered the fundamentals of teaching young children and youth, as well as the fun aspects of the camp including the songs and dances that everyone will learn.

The week-long camps (9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday) are divided into two segments, with the day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, and an evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12.

The younger children participate in several classes each day, attend daily Mass, learn the parts and liturgical music of Mass, and participate in games, skits, songs, recess and prayer. The older students participate in instruction, small group discussions, quiet meditations, prayer and fellowship.

Most importantly, Totus Tuus works to complement what parents teach their children in matters of their faith. This is something Bishop Dewane has stressed since the program had its trial run in the Diocese in 2022.

The 2025 Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus Missionaries range in age from 18 to 27, and two are returning for a second year: Jesse Gomez, a Diocesan Seminarian, and Jesenia Cortes who is from St. James Parish and Santigo Mission in Lake Placid. A second seminarian, Tam Tran will also be a missionary this year.

Cortes looks forward to making a connection with the children again. “I’m so excited to be back. Last summer, serving as Team Leader, gave me the chance to witness God’s goodness and His personal call to holiness in each child and teen we met. I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue sharing His love and growing in faith together.”

  • July 13-18 – St. Joseph Parish, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven Parish, LaBelle;
  • July 20-25 – Our Lady of the Angels Parish, Lakewood Ranch; St. Peter the Apostle Parish, Naples.
