Bishop attends anniversary celebration of home Parish in Wisconsin

Bishop Frank J. Dewane attended the 175^th anniversary celebration Mass at his home Parish, St. James in Cooperstown, Wisconsin, July 27, 2025. Green Bay Diocesan Bishop David Ricken was the principal celebrant for the anniversary Mass and Bishop Dewane, who was baptized, confirmed, and celebrated his first Mass at St. James, was the homilist. Bishop Dewane, who was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay in 1988, spoke about growing up as a member of the Parish and being a part of the last graduating class of St. James School in 1964. “I hope it wasn’t my fault,” he said in reference to the school closing after his last year, which drew a laugh from the congregation. Bishop Dewane shared that in the Diocese of Venice, where he became a Bishop in 2007, there is also a St. James Parish, and that his visits there always bring back memories of home. “When I’m there, my prayers are also for all of you,” the Bishop said.

Day of Reflection for Sacramental Marriage in September and November

Couples preparing for Sacramental Marriage in the Catholic Church are encouraged to attend a Day of Reflection either Sept. 20, 2025, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, Pulte Hall, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples, or Nov. 8 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. Taking place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. a specially prepared volunteer team of married couples share their experiences and information, enabling couples to be more aware of the privileges and responsibilities of marriage. A priest will share information about this beautiful vocation of marriage and its spiritual component. The $60 registration fee includes all retreat materials and lunch. Registration is required. 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign

Join the 40 Days for Life 2025 campaign this fall from Sept. 24 to Nov. 2, 2025. This campaign aims to end abortion through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful vigil in front of abortion facilities. Diocesan Rosary Congress returns in October

The Diocese of Venice will host its annual Rosary Congress Oct. 4-10, 2025, with a growing number of Parishes throughout the Diocese participating. The theme of this year’s Rosary Congress is My Soul Magnifies the Lord (Luke 1:46). The Rosary Congress begins with the celebration of daily Mass and ends with Mass at the same time the following day. During these designated 24 hours, the Blessed Sacrament is exposed for perpetual Adoration, and the five decades of the Rosary are prayed by the faithful every hour, on the hour. Many Parishes will also have Confession available. Stay tuned for a list of participating Parishes, and how you can be part of this beautiful opportunity to adore and grow closer to our Lord. OLPH seeks volunteers

Many hands make light work. Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center in Venice is seeking volunteers. Aid the Diocesan retreat center in providing a peaceful, welcoming atmosphere for those who come seeking transformation in Christ. Retreat for young women
Single women ages 18-30 who are seeking God’s will in their life are invited to grow deeper in prayer and in their identity as a woman, as well as learn more about discerning religious life during a Fiat Ministries Retreat the weekend of Oct. 10-12, 2025, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Retreat Center, 3989 S. Moon Drive, Venice. This retreat is led by Team Fiat, a dynamic group of lay women passionate about supporting other young women. Additionally, consecrated religious sisters from various religious communities from the Council of Major Superiors of Women Religious (CMSWR) assist at each retreat, making each one a unique experience. The goal is for the retreatants to walk away with a greater desire to grow in relationship with Jesus Christ while meeting beautiful religious sisters. The cost is $50. Volunteers needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will shadow experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Diocesan priest celebrates 5^th anniversary of ordination with Mass at Vatican

Father Franckel Fils Aime, a priest of the Diocese of Venice who is currently studying in Rome, had the blessing to celebrate the fifth anniversary of his priestly ordination during a Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, on June 27, 2025, the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Mass was celebrated by Pope Leo XIV, and included the ordination of 32 priests. Father Fils Aime most recently served as Parochial Vicar at St. Peter the Apostle Parish in Naples before beginning his studies in Rome. He described the experience as a “grace from Heaven to study, and especially studying to serve God’s people.”

Avon Park parishioner honored for volunteering and service

Debbie Augusta, of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Avon Park, was recently named the Salt & Pepper Award recipient for community service and volunteerism at the Senior Connections Center Rise & Shine awards ceremony in Tampa on May 20, 2025. According to the award announcement, Augusta was recognized for her remarkable leadership, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the people of Our Lady of Grace and beyond. She has been a positive presence in the community, volunteering her time to support and uplift others. She has led the Women’s Guild, and Parish Council, and brings people together with purpose and heart by leading a variety of fundraisers, food festivals, and other charitable drives. Her service is rooted in relationship building, hands-on care, and leading by example. Congratulations and well done Debbie!

Theology on Tap is a program for young adults in their 20s and 30s, providing an opportunity to explore faith topics in a relaxed social setting at Oak & Stone, 5405 University Parkway, University Park. The Trump Administration is terminating all but two of Catholic Relief Services’ school feeding programs, eliminating a daily school meal for close to 800,000 children in 11 countries beginning in July. For many, this was their only meal of the day. These terminations aren’t just broken agreements with CRS. They are broken promises to children, to farmers, to entire communities. Totus Tuus summer program still going strong

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The week-long summer camp program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first four weeks, the program has taken place at 10 Parishes, with the most recent Ave Maria in Ave Maria and St. Jude in Sarasota. Following the Fourth of July holiday, the program resumes at the following: St. Cecilia, Fort Myers; Our Lady of Light, Fort Myers; St. John XXIII, Fort Myers; St. Thomas More, Sarasota (July 6-11); St. Joseph, Bradenton; Epiphany Cathedral, Venice; Our Lady Queen of Heaven, LaBelle (July 13-18); Our Lady of the Angels, Lakewood Ranch; St. Peter the Apostle, Naples (July 20-25). Diocese and Parish honored for Pro-Life work in Sarasota

The Diocese of Venice Respect Life Office and Incarnation Parish staff in Sarasota were recognized for their work in support of Pro-Life initiatives in the community during the Sarasota Ministerial Association “24^th Anniversary Celebration,” June 19, 2025, at St. Armands Key Lutheran Church in Sarasota. Among those recognized were Tavia Ames, Diocesan Respect Life Director, Father Eric Scanlan, Pastor of Incarnation Parish, Deacon Kevin McKenney, of Incarnation Parish and the board of Sarasota Family Promise, and Lisa Russo, Incarnation Parish secretary. Presenting the honor was Art Reilly, past board chair of Sarasota Medical Pregnancy Center.

The Knights of Columbus Assembly 3862 of Ave Maria Parish in Ave Maria is hosting is 9th annual “God Bless America: Independence Day Bike and Golf Cart Parade.” The opening ceremony will take place in the Piazza in front of Ave Maria Parish church with the parade, led by fire trucks, immediately following. All are welcome to attend and encouraged to decorate their bicycles, tricycles, golf carts, skateboards, and strollers. The route is approximately 2 miles long, but a shorter route, around the church, is available for younger riders. Light refreshments, including birthday cake for the Nation, will be available at the conclusion of the parade.

Ave Maria Youth Conference July 11-13

The 2025 Ave Maria University “Proclaim” Youth Conference is July 11-13. The theme for the Conference is “But as for you, go and proclaim the Kingdom of God” (Luke 9:60). The Conference will include talks from Sister Maria Jose Socias, SCTJM, Michael Gormley, Mari Pablo, and Father Joseph Lugalambi. Music will be by Epic Music Ministries. Four weeks remain in Totus Tuus summer program

The Diocese of Venice Totus Tuus summer program continues to inspire young people to develop a closer relationship with Jesus Christ. The week-long program is visiting different Parishes each week and offering day camp for students entering grades 1 – 6, as well as evening camp for middle school and high school students entering grades 7 – 12. Three missionary teams are leading the campers. In the first two weeks, the program has taken place at six Parishes, with the most recent at St. Agnes in Naples. Fort Myers coach leading USA baseball team

Casey Scott, a baseball head coach at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, has been selected as manager of the USA Baseball 15U National Team. Scott just finished his sixth season as head coach at Bishop Verot, leading the team to a State Final Four for the second consecutive season. During the summers of 2023 and 2024, Scott served as pitching coach for the USA Baseball 15U National Team.

Ordination to the Priesthood July 12

Bishop Frank J. Dewane invites the faithful to the Ordination to the Priesthood of Transitional Deacons Joseph Doherty, Jacob Gwynn and Pat Long. The Ordination will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 12, at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 1301 Center Road, Venice. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this important event in the lives of Deacons Joseph, Jacob and Pat as well as the Diocese of Venice. Parish hosts Mission Week

St. Michael Parish in Wauchula hosted a Parish Mission Week the week of June 2-7, 2025. The week included daily prayer, reflection and trips to different locations to be true missionaries of Christ in the world. The outreach included visiting a nursing home as well as the homebound and needy throughout Hardee County. A Family Day on June 8 which included food, entertainment and music concluded the week. The Parish Mission was organized by the Servant Sisters of the Virgin of Matara who serve at the Parish. Visiting members of the religious order also assisted throughout the week.

Knights elect new State officers

The Florida Knights of Columbus have elected new officers, including Deacon Richard Dahn Jr., of St. Agnes Parish in Naples as State Treasurer. Father Bob Kantor, Pastor of St. Agnes Parish, serves as the State Chaplain for the Knights. St. Jude Parish, 3930 17th St., Sarasota, is hosting a Festa Junina Brasilera (Brazilian Festival), from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., June 14, 2025. Bishop confers confirmation on prison inmates

Bishop Frank J. Dewane conferred the Sacrament of Confirmation upon four inmates in the Diocese of Venice in June 2025. Three were confirmed at Charlotte Correctional Institute in Punta Gorda on June 1, and one at the Hardee Correction Institute in Bowling Green on June 2. When celebrating the Mass for the incarcerated, Bishop Dewane emphasized that he is bringing the forgiveness, mercy, compassion, peace, love and joy of the Lord to others and took time to speak with the inmates after the Mass. Each year, the Bishop celebrates Mass for inmates at different facilities throughout the 10-county Diocese, and has conferred the Sacraments of Confirmation, First Communion and Baptism for dozens of inmates since 2006. The Diocesan Prison Ministry provides a variety of services, including Bible study, TV Mass, religious education and assistance with receiving the Sacraments. Within its boundaries, the Diocese has five state prisons, 10 county jails and one civil commitment program. There are approximately 15,000 incarcerated within the Diocese; meaning the need for priests and volunteers is great. Two schools join Knights in helping migrant farm workers

St. Mary Academy and St. Martha Catholic School in Sarasota worked together on a service project and collected 250 long sleeve shirts for Falkner Farm migrant workers in Myakka. These shirts are vital in protecting workers from pesticides getting on their skin. The schools worked with Knights of Columbus Holy Cross Council 7414 of Palmetto, ensuring the success of the collection drive. The school donations were combined with donations from Holy Cross Parish and other Knights councils and totaled more than 1,000 long sleeve shirts.

Mother’s Day celebrates all moms, including those in need

The month of May in the Church is dedicated to the Blessed Mother, the earthly mother of Jesus, the Son of God. In May we also celebrate Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 11, 2025, honoring all moms, including those in need, or experiencing an unexpected or difficult pregnancy.

The news of an unexpected pregnancy can come as a shock and bring overwhelming feelings of fear, shame, anxiety, and doubt. Without a strong support system, what should be joyful news, can instead be experienced as a crisis. Often, a woman facing an unexpected pregnancy may not know where she can turn for help and assistance.

Walking with Moms in Need is a nationwide program established in 2020 by the U.S. Bishops and operates at the Parish level to accompany pregnant and parenting mothers in need.

The Diocese of Venice is an active participant in this outreach which works to ensure that any woman who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, or parenting in difficult circumstances, can turn to her local Catholic Church and be connected with the resources she needs. Each tip offers practical advice because for women, an unexpected pregnancy can be a difficult and frightening time, and it’s important that she knows she has support.

The guide also provides a reminder that prayer in essential. “Although the tips mentioned can be helpful, don’t forget the most important thing is to pray. Even if it’s just a quick two-second prayer, prayer is the most effective way we can help. Pray for her, for her child, and for guidance in how you can give her the best possible support.”

Knights donate ultrasound to North Port pregnancy clinic

The Knights of Columbus have done it again. The Ponce Deleon Council 8074, of Sacred Heart Parish in Punta Gorda, raised the money to purchase an ultrasound machine for Pregnancy Solutions in North Port.

Bishop Frank J. Dewane led the Blessing and Dedication Ceremony at Pregnancy Solutions on April 23, 2025.

During the ceremony, Bishop Dewane praised the Knights for turning their support of pro-life into something so tangible as an ultrasound machine. “I want to thank you for all the work you have done in support of the pro-life movement,” Bishop Dewane said. “It takes courage to stand up for life while also encouraging others to pay attention to this issue.”

Pregnancy Solutions is a pro-life clinic, with four locations in Sarasota, Charlotte and Desoto counties, that provide a variety of services to pregnant women. The clinic offers a free ultrasound, as well as counseling and support services throughout a pregnancy, including support for the fathers.

The new ultrasound machine includes 3D/4D imaging modes and color Doppler. This technology allows mothers to see their baby earlier than ever. Even at six weeks gestation, parents and family see in detail the beginning of their baby’s development. Approximately 90% of women who view these clear images choose life for their baby!

Steve Kowalski, a Knights Trustee who helped raise the necessary money for the ultrasound, said the Council distributed 1,000 empty baby bottles to parishioners. The bottles were returned filled with spare change, cash and checks. The result was an incredible $20,000 raised in less than a month.

Thanks to the Ultrasound Initiative, the Supreme Council of the U.S. provided a 50 percent matching grant for the $38,000 machine. Kowalski said the Council has a partnership with a pro-life group that covered $7,000 of the total local cost, which meant the Knights used $12,000 of the $20,000 raised on the ultrasound. With the $8,000 remaining, the Council distributed the funds evenly between the four Pregnancy Solutions clinics.

Kowalski said the Knights raise the money to buy ultrasound machines because couples deserve to know the truth about life.

“With this machine, parents will be able to see the baby during the early stages of pregnancy. God has a purpose for this machine at this location, that is to save lives. It’s amazing how the Holy Spirit works.”

Pregnancy Solutions Chief Executive Officer Jaqueline Zdrojowy said the clinics have been blessed to have several ultrasounds donated by Knights Council through the years. Zdrojowy went on to explain the machine’s importance, because many women who come to the clinic with abortion in mind, already having the abortion pill at home.

“They think they are going to see an ultrasound as a confirmation of how far along they are in their pregnancy and then go right back home. Instead, they encounter the love of God in our centers, and they see the image of their baby on the screen, and they leave forever changed.”

Since the national Knights program began in 2012, within the Diocese of Venice more than 30 ultrasound machines, as well as 2 mobile units, have been placed in pro-life pregnancy resource centers.

2025 Spring 40 Days for Life campaign winding down

Another successful Spring 40 Days for Life Campaign in Naples, Fort Myers and Sarasota comes to a conclusion on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2025, but the need to stand up for the unborn remains.

40 days for Life is an international 40-day campaign aims to end abortion locally through prayer and fasting, community outreach, and a peaceful all-day vigil in front of abortion mills. This year’s campaign began on Ash Wednesday (March 5), and was the biggest Lenten effort yet, with prayer vigils in 660 cities. This campaign encompassed 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. Throughout the 40 days, there were opportunities to stand and peacefully pray during vigils in the public right-of-way outside Planned Parenthood abortion facilities in Naples, Fort Myers or Sarasota. A Fall Campaign takes place during October, Respect Life Month.

For up to 12 hours each day, prayer warriors have been standing outside abortion facilities in the region to be a witness for life. Some held signs which read: “Your Mother Chose Life!” “Pray to End Abortion!” “Abortion Hurts Women!” “Save the Babies!” and more.

Carla Torres, a prayer warrior from St. John the Evangelist Parish in Naples, said it is a humbling experience to stand vigil outside of the Planned Parenthood abortion facility. “Knowing what takes place inside is so sad, but I know our prayers are making a difference because we are cheered and booed for being out here, and that is good because that means everyone knows why we are here, to speak out for the voiceless unborn,” Torres said.

Jericho Walk April 13 in Sarasota

To wrap up the Spring Campaign in Sarasota, a closing Jericho Walk is taking place Sunday, April 13, at 4:15 p.m., starting in the parking lot of Community Pregnancy Clinic, 1419 7th St., Sarasota. Just as Joshua and the Israelites did to bring down the walls of Jericho, participants will walk around the block of Sarasota Planned Parenthood seven times in silent prayer, praying to God to bring down the walls around hearts to end abortion in Sarasota, in Florida and in the U.S. All are welcome to attend and walk as much as they are able (Block is .25 miles). There will also be Scripture readings, prayer, and a recap of the Spring Campaign and planning to continue the vigil year-round.

“Way of the Cross” prayer service Good Friday in Naples

In addition, there is a “Way of the Cross” prayer service for victims of abortion on Good Friday, April 18, at 10 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood, at 1425 Creech Road, Naples. None suffer more innocently than children in the womb whose lives are taken by abortion, and their mothers and fathers who carry the burden of abortion for the rest of their lives. 9 Months in the Womb with Jesus

The Diocese of Venice Office of Respect Life is offering “9 Months with Christ in the Womb,” a prayer campaign which draws our attention to Jesus, the God-fetus, during the 9 months He lived within Mary. The campaign began on March 25, the Annunciation of the Lord, when we learn Mary answered God’s call to bear His only Son with an unquestioning “Yes!”

The week three prayer (April 7) is: “Jesus is now two circular rows of cells which contain all the nutrients he will need until the placenta forms. Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers!” The week four prayer (April 14) is: “The placenta which connects Jesus to his mother is now fully formed, but what is far more exciting is that his Sacred Heart, so full of love for humanity, is beginning to develop. Jesus of the womb, Hear our prayers!”

Throughout the nine months, the prayer is offered detailing the development of Jesus in the womb. Therefore, in meditating on the mystery of Christ’s humility in the womb we foster within all Christians a new appreciation for the dignity of our brothers and sisters. Diocesan-wide opportunity for Confession ahead of Holy Week

The Diocese of Venice will have the Sacrament of Reconciliation available at the same time at ALL Parishes to allow the faithful ample opportunity to receive God’s Mercy. To make this opportunity as convenient as possible, in consultation with the Diocesan Presbyteral Council, Bishop Frank J. Dewane has designated the following days and times for Confession at Each Parish: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., on Friday, April 11, 2025, and from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, April 12, 2025.

Palm Sunday and Easter TV Mass to air at special times

The televised Mass for the Homebound on Palm Sunday (April 13, 2025), and Easter Sunday (April 20 and celebrated by Bishop Frank J. Dewane), will air for a full hour on both Sundays. Because of the length, the time of the broadcast on these two Sunday will air at a special time. For viewers in the northern portions of the Diocese (DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee, and Sarasota counties), the Masses will air at 12 p.m. on the CW Network. In the southern portions of the Diocese (Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee counties), the Masses will air at 10:30 a.m. on WFTX-TV (FOX-4). Lenten Masses at Diocesan schools conclude

Bishop Frank J. Dewane completed the latest in a series of Lenten Masses at Diocesan Catholic Schools for Epiphany Cathedral Catholic School in Venice on April 2, 2025. Recent school Masses included March 27, at Bishop Verot Catholic High School in Fort Myers, March 31 at St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton, and St. Andrew Catholic School in Cape Coral, as well as on April 1 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Fort Myers. Additional school Masses were celebrated earlier in the Lenten Season. The continuing message for each of the Masses was for the students to finish the Lenten Season strong and prepare for the coming Resurrection of the Lord at Easter.

Chrism Mass to be celebrated in Naples on April 15

The Chrism Mass, which takes place during Holy Week every year, will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 15, at St. John the Evangelist Parish, 625 111th Ave. N., Naples. During this Mass, Bishop Frank J. Dewane will bless the Holy Oils which are used in the administration of the Sacraments at each parish throughout the year. Priests and Deacons celebrating 25 and 50 years of Ordination are recognized at this Mass. The jubilarians being honored this year are:

Carlos Acutis Canonization watch party April 26 in Sarasota

The Church of St. Patrick, 7900 Bee Ridge Road, Sarasota, is hosting a watch party for the Canonization of Carlos Acutis at 4:30 a.m., Saturday, April 26, 2025. The replay of the canonization will be available for viewing later in the day. Carlos Acustis is identified as the First Millennial Saint, whose devotion to the Most Holy Eucharist was expressed in his creation the Eucharistic Miracles of the World exhibit. The Diocese of Venice Office of Evangelization is offering “A Walk with Jesus for Grieving Parents,” weekend bereavement retreat for parents who have lost a child, no matter the child’s age or how long ago the loss occurred. Seeking Diocesan Totus Tuus Summer Camp Missionaries

Totus Tuus is an exciting Catholic Parish Catechetical Camp for students in grades 1 – 12. The weeklong day camp held at Parishes in the Diocese of Venice is led by trained, paid missionaries. Missionary applications for the summer 2025 camp are now being accepted from anyone, age 18 or older, with an authentic, dynamic Catholic faith who is actively living the teachings of the Catholic Church. Volunteers Needed for Prison Outreach

Join the team of Diocesan volunteers who enter county jails and state prisons within the 10-county Diocese of Venice to do pastoral outreach, distribute the Eucharist and facilitate programs. Priests, Deacons, and lay volunteers are encouraged to assist in this ministry. Volunteers will first participate in an orientation program before entering the facility and will “shadow” experienced volunteers until they feel comfortable. Times and days vary by facility. Safe Environment Training

As part of the Safe Environment Program, the Diocese of Venice requires that all employees and those volunteers who work with children and/or vulnerable adults be fingerprinted and complete online training in Safe Environment prior to beginning employment or volunteering. To report any abuse against minors to the Florida Department of Children and Families please call 800-962-2873.
